Why Visit Kvernufoss Waterfall?

Next, unlike many of Iceland’s popular tourist spots, Kvernufoss still a bit more offbeat than many.  With its dramatic gorge, lush green cliffs, and the ability to walk behind the waterfall itself, it’s a magical and intimate place.  Also, maybe a great place for waterfall wedding photos?  Although, please be aware, that since our team last photographed there in 2017, things have changed significantly.  For example, to combat the traffic and preserve the landscape features ropes, signs, and barriers have been put up.  Please ensure you respect the changes the landowners have made.

Kvernufoss, Where is it?

Kvernufoss is located in South Iceland.  In fact, it is just a 2-minute drive (or 10–15 minute walk) from the Skógar Museum.  Further, the falls, sit tucked away in the Kverna River gorge, often overlooked because travelers focus solely on Skógafoss.  Likely, what makes Kvernufoss such a unique and serene find to visitors!

Firstly, you’ll want to follow Route 1 (Ring Road) East of the city limits of Reykjavik.  Secondly, expect to drive ~2.5 hours one way if you start from the city.  Thirdly, you’ll take a LEFT from main road towards the village or Skogar.  However, stay straight, do not turn left towards Skógafoss.  Why?  Because you need to continue towards the Skógar Museum.  Before the road dead ends, you’ll take a RIGHT towards the museum and Freya Cafe.  Then you’ll continue to follow the road down to the parking lot for the waterfall.  Next, you’ll see a formal paid parking sign which you need to do to park (or download the Parka app and pay via that).

How to Hike to Kvernufoss

The hike to Kvernufoss is relatively easy and fabulous for most fitness levels.  Here’s a step by step of the hike so you can see what to expect…

• Google Map Link
• Distance: Approximately 1.5 km (round trip)
• Hike Time: 30–45 minutes round trip
• Trailhead: Park at the Skógar Museum.  Head to the right of the museum building where you’ll see a small gate and signpost marking the trail.
• Terrain: The path follows a grassy trail into a narrow gorge.  You’ll walk alongside the river and navigate a few rocky areas, so sturdy shoes are recommended.

Can You Walk Behind Kvernufoss?

Heck Yes!  And that’s part of the allure of the location!  Much like its famous cousin Seljalandsfoss, Kvernufoss allows hikers to walk behind (of course depending on weather and water levels).  Just be cautious: the rocks can be slippery, especially during icy and wet conditions.  Remember to pack micro-spikes in your “go bag” if coming between November-March!

When Is the Best Time to Visit Kvernufoss?

In conclusion, the trail to Kvernufoss Waterfall is best explored from Spring (April) through mid Autumn (October) when the path is snow and ice free and safe. Also, Summer (June-August) offers the vibrant vibrant green scenery and longer daylight hours.  Which translates to fewer people between the hours of 5-8am and 8-midnight!  Although you can likely visit year round… You do need to prepare if coming during the winter months.  For example, the path may be icy or have snow drifts and other hazardous hanging down from the cliffs above, and walking behind the waterfall is not advisable.

Where is Merkurker Canyon?

If you’re embarking on a fabulous self-drive itinerary around Iceland and are passing through South Iceland you should add this spot to your schedule!  A few things to consider before finding your way there…

Firstly, Merkurker Canyon is located in the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve.  Secondly, it is around a 2.5 hour drive East from the Reykjavik city limits.  Thirdly, it’s best to ensure you are driving a 4×4 with higher clearance that is rated for F-Roads.  Fourth, it is best to find your way here between April to October depending on weather and road conditions.  Why?  Because outside of this time frame, you will likely need a super jeep and an experienced guide to get you there.

Meanwhile, this stunning valley in the Icelandic highlands between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull.  In fact, this area is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and remote beauty, making it an ideal place for secluded elopement!

How to Get to Thorsmork & Merkurker Canyon

To reach Merkurker Canyon, visitors must take a 4×4 with higher clearance or a super jeep due to the rugged terrain and river crossings along the way.  Note: The difference between the two is the time of year and what the Iceland weather is doing.  For example, even during April – October rivers ca swell to a larger scale which could prevent your rented 4×4 from crossing them safely.  Please do not take any unneeded risks.

Ideally, you’ll already be on your way discovering South Iceland, maybe even staying at Hotel Stracta in Hella.  But regardless, you’ll want to take Route 1 (the famed Ring Road) East towards the town of Hvolsvöllur or famous waterfall, Seljalandsfoss (the one you can walk behind).  Next, if coming from the West to the East, you’ll turn LEFT onto Road #249.

Here you’ll take the paved road until it becomes gravel.  Follow it back for ~10km.  Here are GPS Coordinates: 63°40’34.3″N 19°48’48.6″W to the turn off on the RIGHT hand side and here is a Google Map link.  Special Note: This road is often deeply rutted with potholes and can have several river crossings no matter the time of year.  Ready to see what the hike is like?  Continue reading below…

(Þórsmörk) Thorsmork Hiking Trails

An area of the highlands that is mostly accessible year round with the right vehicle is named, Þórsmörk (Thorsmork).  Firstly, it is within South Iceland.  Second, if you have visited or will visit the iconic Seljalandsfoss Waterfall you were close!  For example, if you would have continued up the road where it shifts to an F-Road you would be on your way there.  Third, the area is filled with dynamic hiking routes like the following:

Valahnúkur

Stakkholtsgjá

Nauthúsagil Waterfall

But there are actually many more picturesque hikes within to embark on!  For instance, today’s Iceland Wedding Planner featured location is a waterfall named Stigafoss.

How to Find Stigafoss

In order to get to Thorsmork and Stigafoss, you will need a 4×4 vehicle or a super jeep depending on the season and conditions.  Why?  Because the road is an F-Road, has river crossings and is deeply rutted with potholes.  Please ensure your vehicle is insured for F-Roads before venturing on.

Meanwhile, the best land marker to get you on your way there would be to first map to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall in South Iceland which is between the tiny town of Hvolsvöllur and Skogar (Skogafoss Waterfall).

Drive Times (one way depending on traffic):

• Downtown Reykjavik to Stigafoss = 2.5 hours
• Selfoss to Stigafoss Waterfall = 1.5 hour
• From Hvolsvöllur = 1 hour
• Vik to Stigafoss = 1.5 hour

Once you pass the turn off going to Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui Waterfalls, you’ll keep going straight on 249 for 5 kilometers.  Next, the road changes from 249 to F-249.  There are river crossings but sometimes they dry up.  But again, please make sure you’re in the right kind of vehicle so no mishaps occur.  You’ll stay on F-249 for ~11km or so and you’ll see the waterfall on your RIGHT side.  Note: If not in a super jeep or truck on at least 35” tires, it may be best to hike from the main road (adds ~15 minutes to your journey).  After all, better safe than sorry!

Stigafoss Hiking Specs

Stigafoss is below the subglacial volcano Eyjafjallajökull.  Truly a picturesque and exciting hike in Iceland!

• Distance: ~1 km / .6 miles round trip from the F-Road and half that if you take the bumpy track.
• Hike Times: 15-30 minutes depending on pace / situation.
• Terrain: Large rocks, dirt, mud, stone, loose rocks, grass in parts, and several foot river crossings.
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Elevation Gain: ~200 feet
• Waterfall Height: ~ 450 feet tall

Discovering Thorsmork (Þórsmörk)

Thorsmork, also known as Þórsmörk in Icelandic, is a stunning nature preserve located in South Iceland.  Þórsmörk directly translates to Thor’s Forest.

Furthermore, the highland area rests between glaciers names, Eyjafjallajökull, Tindfjallajökull, and Mýrdalsjökull.  Which in turn means you will encounter breathtaking landscapes, deep canyons, lush valleys, jagged mountains, and countless hiking trails (one being today’s hike Valahnúkur too).

Truly a haven for outdoor enthusiasts!  To illustrate, tons of hiking opportunities, camping areas, and experiencing the unique beauty of Iceland’s wilderness first hand.  In summer, this area is prime destination for those looking to immerse themselves in Iceland’s dramatic natural scenery.

How to Get to Þórsmörk

Maybe your next question is how do you find your way to Thorsmork?  Well we are thrilled to educate you today!  First, you’ll need to book a tour with a local guide with a super jeep or have an F-Road vehicle that is on 35” tires (or higher) with a snorkel.  That way, if the rivers are normal (not surging) you’ll have no issues getting across them.

Second, from Route 1, you’ll turn onto Road #249 towards Seljalandsfoss.  Third, you’ll follow the road back into the valley passed Gljufrabui and Nauthúsagil Waterfall.  Fourth, depending on the time of year and weather in Iceland this is where the road becomes deeply rutted and rivers crossings begin.  Take great care before you cross rivers if you have not done before.  Always remember you need to cross downstream. not upstream.  And if in doubt, wait and watch another vehicle cross it first to gauge the depth.

Where is Valahnukur?

Next, as you navigate back into the valley, you’ll pass by the start of the Stakkholtsgjá hike.  You’ll cross the river that goes back into that nook ad continue deeper into the Icelandic Highlands.  Additionally, you’ll have 2 choices on where you begin the Valahnúkur hike.  Firstly, if you continue straight back you’ll find signs pointing you towards the Langidalur camp.  Then you would cross that river and take the trail behind the hut.

Second, the way most people go is to Volcano Huts (also called Husadalur).  Why?  Because you cross one of the most dramatic rivers in Iceland called Krossá.  This is one of the reasons why we suggest you ensure you have a larger more equipped vehicle.  For instance, this river swallows up many cars, trucks, and busses each year.  However, once you’ve made it to Volcano Huts you begin the Valahnúkur hike behind the main restaurant building.

Valahnúkur Hike Guide

Alright, so now you know how to get there and where to begin.  But what about the specifics?  Don’t fret, here they are!

Hiking Specs for Valahnukur

• Distance: ~1.5 miles round trip.
• Hike Time: ~1-2.5 hours round trip depending on your pace and how much time you spend stopping along the way.
• Terrain:  Rocky path, loose rocks, large rocks, dirt/mud, sand, slippery rocks, and wooden steps.
• Difficulty: Easy to Moderate!  But if you’re an unsure hiker, it’s best to bring hiking poles.
• Elevation Gain: ~750 feet
• Valahnúkur Hike Parking Lot: Google Map (from Volcano Huts) or Google Map (from Langidalur Hut)
• Best Time to Hike: May – Mid October (depending on river levels)

• Notes:
  • Between the months of mid November– Late April, the area is open but trail markers will likely be covered in snow making the trail challenging.  It may be best to hire a tour company with an experienced guide to hike it with you.
  • Be very aware as there was sadly a death on the way here in September 2018 when the couple attempted to cross surging rivers on their own vehicle.
  • Please respect the ropes, signs, and LEAVE NO TRACE!

Best Iceland Honeymoon Self Drive Route:

Iceland welcomes you year round.  But depending on what you would like to do when you’re here may dictate when you visit.  In fact, today we are going to take our Iceland honeymoon self drive from the perspective of you venturing around with an economy car between May – September.

Therefore, we are not saying you cannot venture outside of this time period, but there are some areas that may be best accessed during July-August.  Regardless, we will try to add a disclaimer to those locations so pay attention as you read through.  Overall, ideally you have 14 days to be able to get a sense of the best of Iceland and go around the entire island at a comfortable pace.  Although if you want to embark on more hiking, multi-day hiking, and Icelandic highland adventures you should add more time or opt out of exploring a region of Iceland.

Iceland Adventure Travel Tips:

• Each day before you head out (or do the night before) make sure you check your route against the following websites:

• Familiarize yourself with how to drive in Iceland before you come.
• Be Responsible: Before you embark on your adventure to Iceland, please take up the mindset of being a responsible tourist.  What does that entail?  You leave no trace, bottom line.  On that same note, it also means you respect the signs, ropes, barriers, and also do not fly your drone in areas that ask you not to.  Let’s be kind to nature so she’s just as pretty during your first trip as your following ones and certainly for others =)  #pleaseandthankyou
• Always pack a “go bag” with whatever you may need throughout the day.  Things like an extra pair of shoes, socks, snacks and layers can be life saving during long days of driving and exploring.

A quick rundown of how to drive in Iceland:

• • • We drive on RIGHT side of the road (just like America).
    • The speed limit on Route 1 majority of the time is 90 km/hr.
    • Speed limit in towns: 30-50 km/hr in populated areas.
    • And if on gravel roads it is: 80 km/hr.
    • There are speed cameras hiding around, drive the speed limit!
    • Be aware of sheep on roads during your summer adventures.
    • Bring a cred card that has a pin so you can fuel up easily outside at fuel stations.

Day 1: Reykjanes Peninsula

Upon landing at the KEF airport (Keflavík International Airport), you may be ready to hit the ground running!  Especially if you’re coming in on an early morning flight (reset the jetlag by powering through it, lol).  So grab your rental car and let’s explore the Reykjanes Peninsula together!

This peninsula is magical!  Unforgettably rich in colors, geothermal heat, and folklore.  And you can visit all of these locations year round.  Just note that the lake area and Seltún can be challenging to get to during the winter months (the road can close).  Here’s an Iceland honeymoon self drive Google Map route to follow in order if coming from the airport.

Reykjanes Peninsula Road Trip Highlights:

1. Garður Old Lighthouse is an adorable white and red lighthouse so close to the airport!  Easy walk and lovely beach exploration alongside.
2. Bridge Between Continents is a small footbridge that goes over the North American and European tectonic plates.
3. Reykjanesviti and Valahnúkur Cliff is Iceland’s oldest lighthouse and lots of basalt rock formations emerging from the sea.  You also may recognize basalt stacks in the sea from the Eurovision Netflix movie (when they are doing the Volcano Man video).
4. Gunnuhver Geothermal Area is an area full of bubbling mud pots and steam vents.  Worth a visit, but if pressed for time, skip the later one is more impressive in our opinion.
5. Brimketill Lava Rock Pool is a naturally carved lava pool.  This is a quick fun stop to stretch your legs and witness the North Atlantic’s power.
6. Seltún Geothermal Area (also called Krýsuvík) is a beautiful boardwalk through a geothermal activity!  Don’t be surprised by the intense sulfur smell.
7. Lake Kleifarvatn is fresh water lake with gorgeous volcanic features.
8. Hotel Borg is a historic hotel in the heart of downtown Reykjavik and within easy walking distance of everything!
9. Bonus Location: If you want 8km hike, head to the Hafnarberg Sea Cliffs and Rock Bridge.

Day 2: Discovering Reykjavík

On with our Iceland honeymoon self drive journey…  Even if you’re not a city lover the charm of Reykjavík will win you over!  Specifically also if you’re a foodie couple too.  Since exploring the city doesn’t require driving, we will just list out some cool experiences to have such as the following:

• Top 12 Restaurants in Reykjavik and checkout more and make direct reservations!
• Experiencing the view from the top of Hallgrimskirkja.
• Drink coffee and have a snack at Café Babalú or Sandholt Bakery.
• Delight in brunch at Vox (weekends and best to book a reservation).
• Visit the one and only Icelandic Phallological Museum!
• Take time to Fly Over Iceland!  May seem like a silly thing to do but it was actually pretty cool.
• Embark on a helicopter experience from Reykjavik.
• Walk along the ocean hand in hand together (Iceland Travel Tip: Look for the famous statue called “Sun Voyager”).
• Go to Iceland’s most famous traditional hot dog stand (Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur)!
• Visit one of the countless swimming pools.
• Witness the architecture of Harpa Concert Hall (both outside and in).
• History lover?  Don’t miss these museums: National Museum of Iceland; Reykjavík Art Museum (Listasafn Reykjavíkur); and the Reykjavík Maritime Museum.

Day 3: The Offbeat Golden Circle

Although the famed “Golden Circle” can feel overrated in places, it is still a must do thing when you travel to Iceland.  However, we invite you to do it our way, so you indulge on from offbeat spots along the way!  Let’s go on with the best offbeat Golden Circle Iceland honeymoon self drive tour!

Self Driving the Golden Circle Highlights:

• þórufoss Waterfall stands just over 60 feet high and a hidden gem on the way to the national park.  A perfect way to kick off your adventure through the Golden Circle!  Fun Fact: It was a Game of Thrones filming location too!
• Thingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a wonderful place to witness the tectonic plates and hike in nature.  Note- There is a parking fee here.
• Öxarárfoss is a waterfall within the national park and is an easy 10-15 minute hike.  Note- There is a parking fee here.
• Geysir is a geothermal area where a hole erupts a hot water stream over 200 feet into the air.
• Gullfoss in our opinion is Iceland’s version of “Niagara Falls.”  It’s super touristy but worth the stop!
• Faxafoss is a wide waterfall that has a salmon ladder next to it and the river opens into a lovely canyon.  Note- There is a parking fee here.
• Friðheimar is a super fun place to have a late lunch.  You’ll see one of Iceland’s largest tomato greenhouses too!
• Secret Lagoon in Flúðir is a fabulous natural hot spring that does not require any hiking and even had creature comforts like delighting in a beer or glass of wine!
• Kerid Crater is a 560 foot wide crater that you can easily hike around.  Note- There is a parking fee here.
• Where to stay near the Golden Circle: Hotel Grimsborgir is Iceland’s only true luxury accommodation in South Iceland.  It is light, bright, beautiful, has hot tubs, and 5-star dining.

Furthermore, check out the easy self drive Google Maps step by step directions of this awesome route!  And be aware that all of these locations are accessible year round but it would be good to have Yaktrax during winter.

Day 4: Best of South Iceland

Oh la la the South of Iceland, our favorite place on earth and our home sweet home =)  Every single thing about the South steals our heart.  Certainly, you could spend weeks discovering all of the wonders, but we know you’re likely going to be on a tight schedule so we will leave you with best of highlights for your first trip at least!  Therefore, it may be good to break these locations into two days versus one depending on daylight hours and how you like to travel.  In the meantime, make sure you follow the Google Maps directions to find yourself to all of the gorgeous spots below…

Most Amazing Things to See in Southern Iceland:

• Keldur Turf Houses are sweet historical houses alongside a turf farm that also has a historical church from the 1800’s.  Note- There is usually a entrance fee during the summer months (June – August).
• Gluggafoss (also called Merkjárfoss) is a lovely waterfall that is multi-tiered.  There is even a hike inside the canyon or on top.
• Nauthúsagil Waterfall is an exciting hike through a narrow canyon to two waterfalls if you make it all the way through!  Note- Depending on your vehicle type, you may not be able to get to it during the winter months.
• Gljufrabui is in-between the above and below waterfalls.  Make sure you bring your raincoat, waterproof boots, and prepare to get wet!
• Seljalandsfoss is one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls but also the largest you can safely walk behind.  Keep your raincoat on if you venture behind as you can easily get soaked.  Fair to say though it is super touristy so don’t expect any private moments.  Note- They charge for parking here.
• Skógafoss Waterfall is 200 feet high by 82 feet wide.  Crazy beautiful but heavily trafficked.  But if you’re a hiker, it’s fun to hike about 1-3 hours above the waterfall (take the steps up and follow the trail back) to see a tons more that spew from this river.
• Kvernufoss is an offbeat waterfall hike beside the Skogar Museum.  This use to be a stunning place where there were no ropers, barriers, or signs.  However, as tourism has increased and irresponsible folks have decided to damage the area by going wherever they wanted the area has changed significantly.  Note- There is an parking / entrance fee that needs to be paid at the museum.
• Loftsalahellir Cave can be found right before you enter the Dyrhólaey Nature Preserve.  Likely if has rained recently it can be a very muddy hike up but worth it!
• Dyrhólaey Lighthouse has two parts a lower (that you cannot see the sea arch from) and higher where the lighthouse and sea arch can be seen.  Good news too, between end of May to August this is a fantastic place to watch puffins.  However, be aware that you cannot drive up to the second area during nesting time (typically between May – June).  During winter the switch back turn up the mountain may not be doable in your vehicle so hiking may be a safer option for you then and in nesting season.
• Reynisfjara Black Beach and Basalt Stacks is Iceland’s most famous black sand beach.  The rip-tide waves however are dangerous so don’t even think about laying out on the beach or touching the water.  Meanwhile, do explore it if the tide is low as it is possible to walk very close to the sea stacks and visit the 3 caves on the beach too.
• Best place to stay in South Iceland: Stay in Vik gives you fantastic options from luxury hotel vibes, cottages, and furnished apartments!

South Iceland Travel Tip: Make sure you know the best restaurants in the South of Iceland before you finalize your Iceland Honeymoon Self Drive route!

Day 5: South Iceland Continued

Southern Iceland is rich in types of landscape that are at your fingertips to experience.  Further, as you head Southeast, feel free to follow these Google Map directions to seek out some of the interesting locations below.

Southern Iceland Adventures Continue:

• Vík í Myrdal Church is a hilltop church overlooking the adorable town of Vík!  In fact, it’s on the same road we are building our dream house too!  Sadly, the church will not be open but we welcome you to enjoy the lovely view!
• Vík Black Sand Beach is a slightly less touristy beach that offers a different view view of Reynisdranger sea stacks.
• How about Horseback Riding on the Black Beach for you head out of Vik?
• Fjaðrárgljúfur is a canyon that use to offbeat until Justin Bieber made it famous.  Although beautiful it now has countless ropes, barriers, and signs asking you to respect the flora trying to regrow.
• Dverghamrar are cliffs that offer a lot of character.  Fantastic quick spot to have a short walk and stretch your legs.
• Svartifoss is a sweet lava rock waterfall within Skaftafell (which is inside the Vatnajökull National Park).  During spring, summer, and fall you can expect the hike to it to take around 45 minutes one way.
• Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon is slightly less touristy compared to other lagoons, especially if you hike further to the left side. The amount of icebergs floating will vary.
• Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most famous places.  You can hike around, watch icebergs float into the ocean, and even book a boat ride to see them up close!
• Diamond Beach is the outlet beach where the icebergs often get carried out to.  Truly the icebergs glimmering on the black beach look like diamonds!
• Where to stay in Southeast Iceland: Fosshotel Vatnajökull.

Day 6: Best of East Iceland

Our Iceland Wedding Planner team has spent weeks hiking throughout all of the nook and crannies of East Iceland.  Therefore, we would love to share with you our local perspective to enhance your exciting Iceland honeymoon self drive journey!  Follow these Google Map directions to reach the fabulous landmarks below…

East Iceland Highlights:

• Start your day with an Early Bird Ice Cave Tour with the Ice Pic Journeys Team (they pair professional photos with their tours)!
• Or get your adrenaline going with the worlds first and only Glacier Zipline (Book for Winter or Summer)?!  Do it!
• Vestrahorn Mountain is the famed “mirror mountain” boasted by the Bollywood film Dilwale.  It’s a dreamy spot both in daylight and at night!  Be aware there is an entrance fee payable directly to the landowner.
• Viking Village & Café is a aging film set (to still be used) of a traditional village.  The café is owned by the landowner and offer light snacks and coffee to warm you up after your hike around.
• Fardagafoss Waterfall is a waterfall that can be seen from the road that leads into Seydisfjordur.
• Town of Seydisfjordur is colorful and offers lots of different little shops and hikes with character.
• Vestdalsfossar Hike is a magical one and true highlight of the small town it resides in.  Do not miss this place!
• Town of Mjóifjörður is one that can only be reached by car mainly between late June – early September.  Super fun place to explore for a half or full day!

Day 7: East Iceland Continued

Woot woot, a week in to your epic Iceland honeymoon self drive adventure!  If you’re game for some hikes today and some relaxation at the end… Don’t miss these Google Map directions to the picturesque places below.  However, do not venture to the first two locations unless road conditions and weather in Iceland allow.

Unique Things to Do in East Iceland:

• Stuðlagil Canyon is a STUNNING 5 mile hike.  For example, during the summer months (and typically just during then) the water is a crazy vivid blue color and that combined with the basalt stacks makes it a wild place to explore.  Also, outside of the summer months, it’s likely you will not experience the pristine vivid color in the water as the power company released water and floods the area making it run gray and cloudy.  Our friends at East Highlanders offer a private tour if you wish to adventure with a local!
• Hengifoss Waterfall hike is one we recommend to do in the summer months.  The path is well marked and there is even a newly built boardwalk through much of it.
• Hallormsstaðaskógur (East Iceland Forest Preserve) where you’ll find a lake, waterfall, and lots of sweet little hiking trails!
• Vök Baths floating pools are a one of kind experience!
• Bonus Day: Let’s say you have an extra day or two and you’re coming in July-August… Then I would add an extra day and embark on the hike to Stórurð!

Day 8: Best of Northeast Iceland

Although the North is a bit less full of variety than the south, it is still packed with beauty.  The best way to begin your adventure to Northeast Iceland is taking your time.  Therefore, Day 8 will mostly focus on driving, but will have a few gems to feast your eyes on such as the following:

Northeast Iceland Highlights:

• Arctic Henge is Iceland’s version of Stonehenge.  Cool place to checkout if you have the time and a magnificent place to watch the Northern Lights!
• Dettifoss Waterfall (both east and west) is only safely reached on your own between June – early September.  For instance, outside of this period, it is best to have a local guide or tour company with you due to the terrain.  Note- We would not recommend going to this location outside of the summer months without a tour guide and / or experience local.  You can get into a lot of trouble with the road conditions in this highland area.  NOTE: During summer also be sure to check out the other two waterfalls nearby (Selfoss and Hafragilsfoss).
• Where to stay in Northeast Iceland: Fosshotel Mývatn (book 2 nights here).

Day 9: Continued Exploration of North Iceland

Even if you’ve been to Iceland before, there is a good chance you didn’t find the time to fully explore the North of Iceland.  Allow us to share with you the best sites to discover while you’re on your Iceland honeymoon self drive driving route…

Best of North Iceland:

• Aldeyjarfoss is a highland waterfall that is best accessed during summer and with a 4×4.  Firstly, you’ll marvel over it’s jaw dropping beauty.  Secondly, you’ll be thrilled it’s only a 5-10 minute walk down to it.
• Goðafoss Waterfall has changed a lot since we did our last wedding there in 2015.  Regardless of the ropes, barriers, and signs it’s still a pretty waterfall.
• Dimmuborgir are historical lava fields, caves, and cool rock formations.  Lots of short of long hikes to partake in.
• Lake Mývatn is a fresh water lake that is protected and very beautiful.  Take time to explore around!
• Námaskard Geothermal Area can be found under the Námafjall Mountain.  It is pretty open but you do need to respect the ropes and stay on the boardwalk.
• Geosea Geothermal Sea Baths in Húsavík await you to relax in after a day our exploring!
• Bonus Days: Should you have an extra day up in this area, you can day trip up to the small town of Húsavík.  There you find the best North Iceland whale watching, the delicious restaurant named Salka, and the famous bar Jaja Ding Dong.  If additional time, checkout the AMAZING Forest Lagoon and / or Myvatn Nature Baths.  Or combine cold water snorkeling and hot springs!

Day 10: Northwest Iceland

Next, big day of driving will lead through untouched fjords!  Firstly, you’ll be in awe over the beauty of the endless beauty.  Secondly, you’ll be amazed by the serene feeling you’ll have driving through the coastline and fjords.  Thirdly, you’ll witness the charm of the local areas and culture.  Therefore, try our Google Map directions to get yourself there flawlessly!

Northwest Iceland Places to Explore:

• Town of Siglufjörður comes with colorful seaside houses, gorgeous mountains, and a sense of stillness.
• Hvítserkur Basalt Formation is one of our favorite spots up North.  In fact, it looks like a dragon drinking water, how fun is that?!  And experiencing it during low tide is even more magical!
• Icelandic Sorcery & Witchcraft Museum is the only place in the world you can see in person a pair of 17th century necropants (nábrók).  Yup, you read that right!  Just go there if you have time because it’s truly unique.
• Where to stay in Iceland Westfjords: Hotel Djúpavík.  A hotel in the middle of an old fishing village that feels abandoned.

Day 11: Westfjords Part 2

The Westfjords of Iceland are best explored during summer.  Not saying you cannot adventure outside of that time period.  But do make sure that you have a higher clearance true 4×4, check the weather, and road conditions before you head out.

To illustrate, the roads are pitted and you cannot go very fast and potholes can cause problems for your vehicle quickly.  Also, there are a lot of areas with limited phone service and steep switchback turns with drops into the ocean.  Plus, you are out in the middle of nowhere in most cases so it’s not super easy to get things repaired quickly.

Places to Explore in the Westfjords:

• Old Castle in Iceland at Arngerðareyri is also called, “kastallin” (featured in above photo).  This is the closest thing to a castle you’ll see in Iceland.
• Dynjandi Waterfall is likely the Westjfords most famous waterfall.  It is possible to hike throughout the multi levels too.  Just be respectful to the ropes, barriers, and signs.
• Rauðisandur directly translates to “red sands.”  So you can anticipate exploring an orange-red colored beach!  As a matter of fact, 10 kilometers of it awaits you!
• Látrabjarg is a bird or nature lovers heaven!  For example, the steep cliffs stretch beyond 8 miles offering birds incredible nesting spots and endless spots for you to view them in their natural habitat.
• Breiðavík is worth a stop if you’re a beach lover and want to experience golden pure sand.
• Where to stay in the Westfjords: Hotel Latrabjarg
• Bonus Day: If you’re a hiker then don’t miss out on scheduling a tour to hike with a local guide Hornstrandir Nature Reserve.  Also do Hólmavík Whale Watching, it’s amazing!

Day 12: Part 1 Snæfellsnes Peninsula

More often than not, locals speak of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula as being extremely enchanted.  From the feelings you have while exploring to how unique the landscapes appear.  Also all of the hundreds of folklore stories the area holds will really enhance the discovery experience.  Likely you could spend 2-4 days here but we will keep it to 2 nights and the best of for now.  Coming from the Westfjords, follow these Google Map directions to get to the Iceland Honeymoon Self Drive through the Snaefellsness Peninsula.

Venturing to the Snaefellsness Peninsula:

• Ferry or Drive: You’ve got 2 choices when you head to the Snaefellsness Peninsula from the Westfjords.  For instance, you can jump on the Baldur Ferry from Brjánslækur to Stykkishólmur (yes it carries your car too).  Or do the drive alongside the peninsula, so take your pick!
• Kirkjufellsfoss & Mountain is not only a picturesque gem of this peninsula, but it is also a Game of Thrones filming location.  We last photographed at this waterfall in 2014, so a lot as changed in regards to ropes, signs, and barriers so please rest them!  Be aware: This area can be very touristy so it’s best to hit early morning or late evening (outside of bus tour times).
• Extra Time here?  If you’re a whale lover you can do Whale Watching in Ólafsvík.
• Where to stay in the Snaefellsness Peninsula: Hótel Búðir or Fosshotel Hellnar (stay 2 nights).

Day 13: Part 2 Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Spending at least 2 days in this fabulous peninsula is a must do.  So on with Iceland honeymoon day 13 and part 2!

Best of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula:

• Arnarstapi is a tiny seaside village that is in our opinion the most photo-worthy location in the peninsula.  Truly a must see, so don’t skip it if your schedule allows.  Gorgeous cliffs and crazy beautiful stone bridges await you!  A less than 1 hour hike round trip to see everything too.  This area can be very touristy so it’s best to hit early morning or late evening.
• Londrangar is a basalt rock formation that stand 240+ feet out of the ocean.
• Malarrif Lighthouse is within walking distance of Londrangar and offers a lovely view of the lighthouse and stony basalt rock beach.
• Djúpalónssandur Beach claim to fame is being a shipwreck beach with badass cliffs and lava rock textures.  The beach is pretty popular but there is plenty of space to sneak away from folks but do be careful around the waves / water.
• Saxhóll Crater is a quick easy hike around a pretty crater.  Worth a stop if you haven’t seen one before.
• Skarðsvík is a gorgeous golden sand beach with moss fields and cool cliffs around.  Use to be offbeat but now lots of people stop to explore.  Iceland Travel Tip: Please pick up any trash you find from yourself or others.
• Svöðufoss is ideal if you want a 30-80 minute hike round trip to an offbeat waterfall!
• Bæjarfoss can be found behind the village of Ólafsvík.  Only being a 10-20 minute hike is totally worth it!
• Grundarfoss Waterfall is an offbeat gem that can be found just outside of the town of Grundarfjörður.  It’s a rocky 10-15 minute hike one way.  Note- The landowners allow you to visit if you leave no trace but please make sure the gate is closed every time you pass it.

Wow-wee lots of amazing stops round out our favorite locations to hit while on your Iceland honeymoon self drive adventure through the Snaefellsness Peninsula.  Use this Google Maps link to drive it and/or take out any locations that are not of interest.

Day 14-16: Bonus Adventure Days!

Any extra days you have could be used to explore countless other places between all of these areas or dive deeper into undiscovered spots.

• Drive from the Snaefellsness back to Reykjavik by doing this Iceland honeymoon self drive route on Google Maps.  The route takes you to Eldborg Crater; Hraunfossar Waterfall; Deildartunguhver Geothermal Area; and to the start of the Glymur Waterfall hike or see it from a helicopter!
• Book a tour to hike to Húsafell Canyon  Baths.
• Hike to Iceland’s tallest waterfall: Glymur
• Explore lava tube caves with The Cave team!
• Book a tour to the Inside the Volcano Experience.
• Heading into the Icelandic Highlands (For example, Kerlingarfjöll or Þórsmörk).
• If you have a bonus day in the South, heading to the Westman Islands is worth a day trip!
• Other offbeat adventures to choose from too!

Get Married in Iceland Before Your Honeymoon!

High five for making it through and / or dreaming of your 14 day Iceland honeymoon self drive adventure!  We hope it leads you down a road of countless joy and beloved memories.

However, if you have the idea of trying to have one of the locations featured in today’s post as your Iceland wedding location, please involved a local Iceland Wedding Planner.  75-80% of the locations shared are on private property and the other 20-25% are on land owned by the government, towns, or businesses.  Although the landowners and towns / organizations allow you to visit personally, you do need to ask for permission / permit in advance to have professional photos and / or a wedding group there.

South Iceland Hiking: Þórsmörk (Thórsmörk)

As you plan your self-drive adventure through South Iceland, you may want to go more offbeat.  Especially if you are renting a more adventurous vehicle (like an ISAK Land Rover) and you also have the experience / skill set to drive through rivers.  Therefore, you’ll want to find your way into Þórsmörk (Thor’s Valley).  Furthermore, you could easily spend a week hiking all around this valley and not get bored.  The Stakkholtsgjá hike is one of the countless you can embark on within this valley.

However, before you add this place on your list… It is very important you have a capable 4×4 (on at least 35” tires and ideally with a snorkel) to drive into this area though.  Why?  There are countless glacier fed river crossings and often the rivers swell.  Basically, it is best to take a tour into here, have a local who knows the area with you, or have the right kind of 4×4 if you are experienced crossing raging rivers.  For example, there have been tragedies in this area with folks not having the right kind of 4×4 to cross them in or the knowledge.  Note: The couple featured in that terrible tragedy were NOT our clients.

Meanwhile, as you look to planning your adventures within Þórsmörk you’ll want to know what are some of the hikes you can embark on within… So here are a few to get you started and your mind reeling!

Hikes in Þórsmörk:

• Nauthúsagil
• Stakkholtsgjá Hike (today’s Iceland Wedding Planner monthly hike feature)
• Gigjokull
• Þórsgata Volcano Trail (13.5 miles)
• Valahnúkur Mountain (1.5 miles)
• Merkurrani Plateau (5.9 miles)
• Þórsmörk Tindfjöll Circle (6 miles)
• Þórsmörk Highlights (Þórsmörk Valley – Slyppugilshryggur Ridge – Slyppugil Canyon – Langidalur Hut – Valahnúkur Mountain – Volcano Huts).

How to Get to Stakkholtsgjá

Ready to find your way to begin the Stakkholtsgjá hike?  Firstly, not far from Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, you’ll find the entrance into Þórsmörk (F249).  Secondly, as we alluded to above it is vital you go in prepared with knowledge and the right vehicle type to be successful and safe through the river crossings.  Thirdly, on your way in, don’t forget to do the short hike through the super narrow canyon named, Nauthúsagil.

Fourthly you’ll drive for about 40 minutes from where the general road 249 transitions to F249 (you’ll see the road go from paved to unpaved).  Fifth, you’ll go through many river crossings and it’ll seem like they increase in size the further you go in.  Shortly after you cross a rather huge river you’ll see a blue sign that says, Stakkholtsgjá.  Also to the right hand side you’ll see a picnic table and that is basically where you need to park.

Before you begin the Stakkholtsgjá hike, you may want to know what it means, right?  Directly translated it would be called, “coat hill canyon.”  Instantly upon arrival you’ll be overcome with a sense of excitement popping out of your super jeep.  Next, make sure you have the right gear for the hike… To illustrate, it would be good to have proper hiking boots, hiking poles if you get unstable easily, water shows or SealSkinz socks (for foot river crossings), and a backpack if you choose to carry water, snacks, etc.

Stakkholtsgjá Hike Information:

• Vehicle Needed: Large SUV (IE, On minimum 35” tires with snorkel) or Super Jeep (typically on 38-46” tires).
• Directions to Parking Lot: Google Map.
• Distance: 1.5 mile Hike.
• Time: 30 minutes (1 way).
• Skill Level: Easy
• Terrain: Flat ground (but no groomed trail), rocky, foot river crossings, and a few narrow paths (which can be muddy).
• Special Note: There are no signs or trail markers here (as of when this post was written) except the sign the blue  sign shown below before the next river crossing.
• Leave No Trace Policy: Discover new places responsibly (take your own trash and pick up any you find).

Step by Step Guide to the Stakkholtsgjá Hike

After you park your 4×4 truck and grab what you need it’s time to embark on the Stakkholtsgjá hike!  Be aware there are no signs, ropes, barriers, or trail markers at all as of when we wrote this Iceland Wedding Planner blog post.  However, it is a pretty darn straight forward trek.  For example, you’ll follow the river bed back into the canyon after you pass the picnic table.  Towards the right hand side, you’ll see a narrow trail that will look very worn by people / sheep and you can follow that back if you find the river bed rocks to intense of terrain for you.  Overall, you can expect to be hiking for about 30 minutes one way depending on your pace.

Stakkholts Canyon Cave

Within the first 10 minutes of the Stakkholtsgjá hike, you’ll come across a small cave (Stakkholtshellir) on the left side of the canyon.  In order to explore it, you’ll need to cross the river by foot.  Depending on how much rain that had happened recently, you may have a few spots to cross and the depths may vary (ankle to knee high).

Before doing so this may be a good time to change into your water shoes or wellies if you have them if you don’t want to get wet.  Otherwise it’s handy to have a change of shoes for after the hike.  When you hike up to the cave, you’ll immediately notice the ferns growing throughout the cave, really pretty!

Stakkholtsgjá Waterfall

Heading further into the Stakkholtsgjá hike, you’ll continue to follow the river back until you see a cross road canyon emerge (about 20-25ish minutes in).  That surprise canyon goes to the right but the waterfall you came for is to the left.

Woohoo!! Only 5 minutes left of hiking… At this point you have to cross a few rivers again by foot before you head back into the slot canyon where the waterfall is.

Certainly you can decide how close you get to the waterfalls at the end.  Again, err on the side of caution, as the water levels vary.  In fact, I’ve seen it chest high in some spots and the rocks can be very slippery.  So be careful as you discover!  Enjoy the hike back out too because you’ll experience the canyon from a totally different perspective!

Iceland Wedding in Þórsmörk

About Nauthúsagil Waterfall

 Nauthúsagil Waterfall directly translates to “bull house canyon.”  It’s been named this because that what it truly was long ago!  Farmers at Stóra-Mörk kept their bulls here to graze sometime in the late 1700’s.  Furthermore, there stories of this place being haunted also come along with exploring this area.  So it is truly intriguing!  Traveling through the South of Iceland you’ll find this beautiful hidden place just past Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi waterfalls heading towards a super jeep area called Thórsmörk.

How to Get There

Driving from Reykjavik to Nauthúsagil Waterfall, you can expect to be in the car for 2 hours.  Once you pass the small town of Hvolsvöllur your excitement and smiles will grow in anticipation!  You’ll go past as we previously mentioned, Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi waterfalls.  Please be aware that the road shortly after you pass those waterfalls turns into an F-Road (F-249).  Smaller economy cars are not allowed on f-roads as a general rule from rental car companies.  Before venturing here, make sure you are coming on a 4×4 that is allowed on f-roads.  A small SUV is more than enough to get to this specific spot but, make sure your rental car company deems it okay.

After about a 10 minute drive past Gljúfrabúi, you’ll see a small sign on the right hand side named: Nauthúsagil (see Google Map).  When you turn in if there has been a lot of rain recently, there will be a small river you need to cross here (more like a stream most days).  Then you’ll see the very small parking lot ahead of you and an sign telling you more about the history of the location and that it is a part of Katla GeoPark.  Park here so you are not in anyone’s way coming and going as there are tour operators often taking their guests here.  Lastly, about the directions, know this area is accessible year round, but when winter comes we suggest a truck that is on at least 35” tires, an inflation / deflation system, and an experiences driver-guide taking you in.

Hiking to Nauthúsagil

Now here comes the super fun part… Hiking into Nauthúsagil!  Ideally, before you begin the hike it is good to be a responsible tourist and pick up any trash you see around left from others.  Once you’ve done that gear up!  To illustrate, hiking clothes and wind/waterproof gear are important to have.  Additionally, you’ll want to wear wellies that are calf to knee high if possible or hiking boots you don’t mind getting soaked.  Why?  Because the hiking path is through the river.  Total time hiking is not longer than 20 minutes.

How to Hike to Nauthúsagil Waterfalls

• Step 1: Hike back towards the opening the canyon (follow the river on the left side).
• Step 2: Once the canyon narrows the route is through the river.  If the water level is lower you can easily use rocks as your foot path (and potentially not get wet).
• Step 3: You’ll find (hopefully) 2 boards that will act as a “bridge” getting you over to the right side of the canyon as you trek further in.
• Step 4: About 5-10 minutes into the hike you’ll arrive to the 2 lower waterfalls.  Stop and enjoy it for a few minutes!
• Step 5: Hike over the top of the first lower waterfall.
• Step 6: Grab the chains that are mounted to the left side of the canyon wall.
• Step 7: Shimmy yourself across the chains and then grab the rope (or chain) that is mounted to the top of the higher waterfall to pull yourself up to the top of it.
• Step 8: Trek less than 5 minutes more through the river and experience the taller waterfall which is at the end of this canyon.
• Step 9: Enjoy the sights, sounds, waterfall spray, and the majesty the waterfall creates!
• Step 10: Hike carefully back the same way.  Bonus:  If you still have energy on your way back out in the middle of the canyon you’ll see a path that goes up and you can view the tall waterfall from on top of the canyon too!

Additional Iceland Canyon Hiking Tips:

Lastly a few other things to keep in mind as you find your way to hiking to Nauthúsagil Waterfall:

1. Bring an extra pair of shoes and socks.
2. Have an extra set of clothes with you (just in case you lose footing on the chains and go into the water fully).
3. Bring a water bottle to fill up with delicious spring water!
4. Be patient if there are other explorers here as only 1 person should be on the chains climbing at a time.

Could you imagine getting married in a once in a lifetime location?  Literally a place where all the stars, temperatures, and conditions all have to align in order to make it happen.  But then again that’s exactly what our team specializes in… making your adventurous wedding dreams come true!  Come along with us today as we share such an incredible moment in time!

Kristina and Ben

Meeting as co-workers in early 2015, Kristina and Ben found their way into an relationship together!  Finding common ground whilst hanging out, foodie experiences, working out, playing games, traveling, and hiking together.  As time went on, they even formed a little trifecta with their Rottweiler, Briggs!

Years later, a surprise proposal follows while tailgating at a University of Florida football game.  Everyone knew about it except our lovely bride to be Kristina…  High five Ben for keeping the element of surprise strong!  Shortly after, these two decided to forego a traditional wedding in the USA, for the opportunity to travel.  Frankly, they were seeking a wedding location that looked and felt like another “planet.”

Therefore, Iceland was the answer for the variety of landscapes, textures, and tones.   Furthermore, seeing that our Iceland Wedding Planner team are experts in planning and photographing ice cave elopements, they had to contact us.  Specifically, they loved the idea of being married inside of a crystal blue ice cave.  The best chance is planning a February elopement in Iceland so that is exactly what they did and here is their frozen glacier lake elopement story…

Eloping During Winter in Iceland

You’ve heard us say this before, but winter weather in Iceland can be unforgiving and brutal in every way possible.  To illustrate, on February 19th, the day before Kristina and Ben were set to elope in Iceland, there was a crazy storm that closed all of the roads in the south.  For real, like from Seljalandsfoss Waterfall to Hofn.  But, the storm was going to subside around 10pm and the roads were anticipated to open then.

Firstly, turns out only part of our team (hair and makeup) had made it to the hotel before all of the roads closed.  Secondly, the rest (Iceland elopement photographer, video, Pastor, and super jeep team) and even the bride and groom were all stuck behind different areas of the road closures!  Which then turned into phone and email cheer sessions, status updates, hilarious joke telling, horn honking, and like 5 worst case scenario planning depending on the arrival time to the hotel for everyone!  Thirdly, thankfully the roads began opening at further west sections around 6pm, allowing our bride and groom to play catch to the rest.  By 11pm the main road closure keeping everyone from the final stretch of the hotel opened!

Upon arriving to the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon around 1:30am, everyone high fived and laughed at surviving the storm!!  Eloping during winter in Iceland as we said can be challenging, but the morning of February 20th 2020 was BEAUTIFUL, only wind needed to be battled   All aspects of our team were hard at work making magic happen before loading into the super jeep for the day.

Adventurous Hiking Elopement Begins

 One of the coolest things about Kristina and Ben was that during our Skype call they flat out said, “We’re all in.  Not going all the way there, to b*tch out!”  In other words, they wanted the full experience driven elopement no matter the weather or crazy conditions!  They easily rated themselves a 10 out of 10 on our adventure scale and it was 100% the truth!  Which is exactly why we pitched them more challenging Iceland elopement itineraries.

Leading up to their elopement adventure, we could not say for sure what blue ice cave would be an option for them.  Usually not until the week of are we able to know what ice caves will be viable options and what the conditions could look like (IE, glacier walking crampons versus ice climbing ones, etc).  However, all of the plans included some sort of blue ice cave.  Meanwhile, one of our plans for the day included a frozen lake hiking elopement!  For example, the morning brought cold enough temperatures to make the magical fairytale frozen glacier lake elopement and ceremony inside of a floating iceberg reality.

Jumping out of the super jeep and gearing up the hike across the lake to the floating iceberg began… And it truly was unreal as soon as the iceberg was in our eyesight!  Truly it felt like we had landed on the ice planet from Christopher Nolan’s Intersteller.  Special Note: Our team takes great care in scouting and preparing for situations before we take our couples into areas to ensure safety at all times.

Additionally, as we alluded to earlier these two were also seeking a Iceland wedding ceremony location which looked and felt like another planet.  So when the arrived, they were speechless!!  The wind whirled through the cave but these two held such an intimate inspiring frozen glacier lake elopement ceremony inside of that very blue ice cave!

Exploring Inside a Floating Iceberg Ice Cave

Have you ever explored the inside of a floating ice cave on a frozen glacier lake?  Umm, yeah it was a first for us too!  Likely, to ever replicate something like this again you’d need all the stars and temperatures to align again.  Ben and Kristina savored every single second discovering all of the textures and tones of this extremely special place!

After fully trekking around one side of the iceberg it was time for Kristina and Ben to explore the outside!  Our Iceland elopement photographer and video team captured the most INSANE elopement photos and footage… See for yourself below!  I mean after seeing these wouldn’t you want to plan a frozen glacier lake elopement too?

Offbeat Roads and Mountain Views

Hiking about an hour after the frozen glacier lake elopement, back to the super jeep, it was time to warm up and continue on with their adventurous day.  Did you know East Iceland is known for having Iceland’s tallest mountain and reindeer?  It just so happened Kristina and Ben experienced both!  Further, the schedule continues on with gorgeous warm sunlight on an offbeat black beach road which had the most incredible mountain view…  Kristina busted out her veil for a few Iceland elopement photos and they shared some super fun dance moves!

Romantic Moments on Diamond Beach

Although Diamond Beach (across the street from Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon) is not a location our team frequents because it is heavily populated with visitors we made an exception for these two!  Therefore, from the first moment Kristina and Ben reached out to us, it was on their “must do” list for their frozen glacier lake elopement adventure.

Due to the storm the previous night, the beach was full of chunks of ice (more than usual everywhere!).  For instance, that partnered with the glorious evening light, made it such a romantic scene for Iceland elopement photos!  Moreover, the drive back to the hotel brought a perfect sunset view of the kissing trolls!

What could be better than a cozy warm dinner after a adventurous day hiking in Iceland?  Well, we think having a styled dinner table after your frozen glacier lake ice cave elopement could top it!  Likely, Kristina and Ben would agree.  A delicious and traditional Iceland wedding cake for two adorned their sweetheart table too!  Believe it or not, their night ended with experiencing the Northern Lights (no shame in not having photos and staying bundled up!)!

#1 Sea Arch Champagne Picnic

If you’re heading to Northern Iceland there is a dreamy spot tucked away in the Vatnsnes Peninsula named Hvítserkur.  It’s a 49 foot basalt stack that looks like a dragon drinking water.  It’s an easy hike alongside of the cliffs or beach to get away from any tourists (although can be muddy some days).  We suggest grabbing a bottle of bubbles from Duty Free upon arrival or Vínbúðin and having a champagne picnic for a few hours!

#2 Hiking & Hot Tubbing

What makes Iceland unique is that you can go for hike and reward yourself with a hot spring at the end.  The Húsafell Canyon Baths is a perfect example.  You can spend two hours of your day doing an exclusive hike to a private area where you will delight in gorgeous and unique geothermal pools!  Please note, this area is exclusive and only available to 20 or less folks at a time and booking a tour there is the only way to this private property area.

If that route doesn’t sound right for you, maybe try the hike to Glymur Waterfall and then end the day soaking in the hot tubs at Hotel Glymur!  Nothing like getting that “earned it” feeling on a hike with your favorite person and ending the day snuggling in a hot tub [Hello romance!]!

#3 Go Waterfall Hunting

Thousands of waterfalls await you… So why not make a day of it by building a day exploring as many as you can in one day!  Big, small, wide, powerful, volcanic, grassy, glacier or spring fed, etc the variety is endless!  Going waterfall hunting is high on our romantic things to do in Iceland list because there is a sense of awe, wonder, and absolute magic that comes with it!

#4 Hire a Local Guide for the Day

Wouldn’t it be super fun to see the Icelandic landscapes from the eyes of a local?  Someone to get you away from the crowds and show you pure sides of Iceland…  For example, our friends at East Highlanders offer a hike to Stuðlagil.  Perhaps even have it forever documented by a local photographer too?!  Imagine just the two of you bouncing around hand in hand getting lost in the moment, BLISS!  Meanwhile, if that’s not your thing, maybe have an Iceland luxury picnic at one of the locations the guide takes you… Few things compare to having cheese, wine, and an epic waterfall view!

#5 Múlagljúfur Canyon Hike

Care to hike to a lesser known place that exudes a romantic mystery only a place like Iceland can only contain?  Múlagljúfur Canyon encompasses everything you could want to see on a hike.  From seeing a river, waterfall, crazy shaped mountains, to the breathtaking a view of Öræfajökull volcano you’ll be in heaven on this hike!

To get there, you’ll need to be near to the famous glacier lagoon, Jökulsárlón.  Be prepared to hike in mud, slippery rocks, cross a river, and hike on gravel (proper hiking boots are a must).  Expect at least a one hour one way hike.  Note: Would be good to have a map or a local with you as the trail is not really visible and there are no markers guiding you.

#6 Spoil Yourself at the Retreat Hotel

If you’re a luxury hotel seeker, look no further than spending two nights basking in the lap of luxury of having your own private piece of the famed Blue Lagoon.  The Retreat Hotel offers a sublime experience especially if you book one of the Lagoon Suites which not only come with your own private lagoon but also a private butler to be at your beck and call.  Worth every single penny!  Their experiences begin at 1,109 Euro’s per night and range up to 1,800+ Euro’s per night.

#7 Star Gazing or Midnight Sun Exploring at Stokksnes

Grab some blankets, a picnic, and hot chocolate and head to Stokkenes on the Southeastern side of the Icelandic coast (near to Hofn).  There you will find the most stunning mountain called, Vestrahorn.  Perfect location to star gaze or explore during Iceland’s months of midnight sun!

Topping our personal list of romantic things to do in Iceland is visiting this stunning place year round.  During the season, this can be an amazing viewing area for Northern Lights.  However, the Northern Lights don’t even have to come out for it to be a magical night to remember!  Special Note: This is a private property area and there is a small admission fee, so please be respectful and pay it.

#8 Get Lost in Reykjavik

If the weather keeps you from venturing out of the city limits… Wander around historic buildings, countless museums, cozy café (we even have a Cat Cafe!), and sweet little shops (like the Handknitting Association)!

#9 Horseback Riding on a Black Beach

Likely, at some point you’ve found yourself curious about the Icelandic horse while trip planning.  Whether you love the style of their manes, intrigued by the clever trots, or the small body size, they are truly a unique beast!  What could be more romantic than taking one for a ride down one of Iceland’s iconic black sand beach landscapes?  Vik Horse Adventure will take you on an experience you’ll never forget!

Seljavallalaug is a mountain pool that was built in the 1930’s.  Located in Southern Iceland between Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss.  After a sweet 15-20 minute hike, you arrive to this gem.  NOTE: The area has become a bit touristy (and dirty, don’t plan to use the changing room) so we suggest going early in the morning or late evening.  And make sure you have headlamps if you’re coming or going after sunset!

#25 Experience an Icelandic Hot Dog, together!

Okay my American friends, don’t cringe at this romantic things to do in Iceland idea…  These are not dirty who knows what pig part hot dogs.  Rather they are delicious lamb based ones that come with the most yummy toppings (friend onions, raw onions, ketchup, spicy mustard, and something called Remoladi which in my humble opinion tastes like potato salad).

Because we are not a fast food thriving culture it’s common place to stop at a gas station and get a traditional hot dog, Coca Cola and a Prince Polo Bar.  Dare you to experience the goodness together while on your road trip through Iceland!

Selecting the right and most romantic place to stay in Iceland can really change the vibe of the trip… So choose carefully!  Our list of favorites follows below depending on the areas of Iceland you intend on exploring.

Responsible Tourism in Iceland

Being a responsible tourists meas a lot of things to different people.  Some may think offsetting your travel foot print by donating to organizations like Carbonfund is enough.  And that is a fantastic start, truly.  But being locals to Iceland and you coming to visit, we would encourage you to consider a few other avenues as you embark on your travel plans.

To illustrate, we urge you to read, believe, take, and follow the Icelandic Pledge.  Serious folks, we want all parts of Iceland to be as unforgettable for you as future generations and we cannot do this without your help.  On that same note, leave nothing behind, respect boundaries of ropes, gates, signs, and ask for permission before if taking professional photographs.  NOTE: The majority of the areas you will travel throughout are on private property (not government owned or public), like 80% of the country.  Example, the extremely popular and touristy, Seljalandsfoss Waterfall is privately owned by several farmers, not the government.

Furthermore, please log your travel plans on Safetravel so the people here and at home can come find you if you do not hit your hiking marks for example.  Lastly, please STOP GEOTAGGING!  I beg you, please stop.  Sharing locations is becoming an epidemic and many locations can only handle a certain amount of people visiting.  Just tag it as “Planet Earth” if you must.  Be responsible, the future of those locations depends on you.

How Iceland Wedding Planner Takes Responsibility:

From inception of our adventure wedding business model in circa 2010 (and 2012 specifically based in Iceland) it’s been our mission to be sustainably minded.  How do we do this?  First, we cultivate relationships with the landowners, have contracts in place or request permission / permits before arriving, and offer them something to them or a service in return.  Second, we exclusively work with a local (not big box) super jeep company.  One who meticulously maintains their trucks (No oil / fuel leaks in route damaging the landscape) and employs experienced drivers who take care in the routes we choose to get to our private Iceland wedding locations.

Each truck also has an inflation and deflation system for the tires to proved a smoother ride, but also ensures we leave no trace behind.  Our objective is to leave areas better than when we found them.  Third, arriving to areas, if we see trash we pick it up and we never leave anything behind once our couples or groups are finished exploring.  Fourth, more often than not, our highland porta potty is in tow to ensure no “calling on nature.”

Lastly, we take our clients to places that are not tourist locations.  This saves some of the wear on the tourist locations.  We also require all of our clients and partners to sign NDA’s protecting the areas and landowners privacy.  Certainly executing weddings with guests, an announcement is made as well to ensure the guests do not geotag either.

Likewise, by educating our clients that when or if they do choose visit those places, they respect and stay behind the designated ropes and are aware of the waves, etc.  Knowledge is power and allows you to be a responsible tourist and not piss off the locals in the process either   All that said, come along with us today as we share 55 Offbeat and Unique Things to do in Iceland instead of heading to the tourist locations!

No matter if you are eloping in Iceland or planning an Iceland wedding with guests, it is likely you will explore the island before or after.  Chances are you’ll want to experience Iceland in the purest way you can, right?  After all, that are what all of the photos imply.  The reality of the situation is that you’ll likely be next to 100+ people while exploring the typical tourist locations like Seljalandsfoss; Skogafoss; and Reynisfjara Black Beach, etc.  Below we will feature by area 55 Offbeat and Unique Things to do in Iceland!

Reykjavik Offbeat Things to Do:

Literally the translation for Reykjavik is “Smokey Bay.”  Did you know Reykjavik is not only Iceland’s capital, but it is also our only city?  Everywhere other place you encounter is just a town or village, not a city.  Mainly because of the population within each.  Example, the town of Vik is only 300-400 person strong.  In contrast, the entire Icelandic population is only a mere 330,000 people (when this Iceland Wedding Planner post was written).

That said, do not expect our city to be some amazing metropolis like Chicago, Los Angeles or New York City, well only in price that is!  But we can hold our own in things to do.  The city is constantly changing, growing, and learning.  There is a lot of American influence so many of you may feel right home.

When exploring a new city you may seek out places that a bit more off the beaten path.  We don’t blame you, so do we!  Personally I’m terrified of crowds and when I see selfie sticks I suddenly have the urge to break them in half, lol!  Finding others who dance to the same tune and like traveling that way as well… You have inspired us to craft this 55 Offbeat and Unique Things to do in Iceland list!  Thanks for that

Ohhhh man, Southern Iceland.  Everything here, makes my heart skip a beat.  Except for the tourist locations that is.  We would much rather introduce you to less or non-touristy places to explore within Southern Iceland.  It’s important for you to encounter places that will give you that “I just discovered” this feeling.  It’s rejuvenating and good for your soul, truly!

Special note to those couples who are clients of ours reading this 55 Offbeat and Unique Things to do in Iceland list!… This is just the tip of the iceberg, there are wayyyyyyy more incredible places we will share with you to experience on your own before after your adventurous elopement or Iceland wedding with us.  These are just the places, we are comfortable with releasing to the public.  We’ll hook you up when you’re ready to plan your pre/post Iceland wedding adventures!

13- Take a short hike down to þórufoss Waterfall (on the way to þingvellir National Park).

14- Explore an Icelandic forest! Haukadalur Forest is within the token “Golden Circle” area.

15- Go inside of a volcano!  We’re not huge fans of tours, but the Inside the Volcano experience is unique.  In fact, did you know our team held the first wedding inside of a volcano?

16- Float your worries away in the geothermal hot springs that are NOT the touristy Blue Lagoon.  Maybe even try the Secret Lagoon too!

17- Head to Friðheimar Greenhouse for lunch!  Pro Tip- Remember to make in advance reservations so you will not be disappointed.

18- Drive to the non-touristy waterfall named Faxafoss (near to the Golden Circle).  Tourist traffic typically stays at the top.  Walk down from the top parking area, explore, and also checkout the salmon ladder to the left side of the waterfall.  Super cool place!

19- The lesser known Reykjanes Peninsula should also be on your list!  You’ll find a cool geothermal area to explore (not bathe) named Gunnuhver.

20- Go lighthouse hunting in the Reykjanes Peninsula.  One of our favorites is Reykjanesviti, mainly because of the sea cliffs all around.

21- Checkout the best places to eat in Southern Iceland!

22- Board the ferry to the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) and go discover it’s beauty!

23- Take our advice on heading out on some of Southern Iceland’s best hikes!

24- Pack a picnic and delight in the quietness of Þorsteinslundur (Thorsteins Grove Waterfall).

25- Wanting a more daring adventure on your own?  If you have an SUV and knee high waterproof boots and sense of adventure and hike through a river canyon that opens to an offbeat waterfall named, Nauthúsagil.  For instance, if you’re brave enough, follow the chains mounted to the canyon walls to an even more beautiful waterfall!  Proceed with care and only take memories!!

30- Adventure to a offbeat black sand beach that will have barely any tourists, likely just locals.  It’s called Vikurfjara Black Sand Beach.

31- Experience one of the coolest Lava Tunnels we have in Iceland.

32- Paraglide from the top of a Mountain in Vik or leap through the valleys nearby via the Vik Zipline!

33- Eat a traditional Icelandic Hot Dog or Meat Soup!  Hands down one of our favorite things to do are to buy a hot dog from the N1 fuel station in Vik.  For example, they are so delicious and ingrained as a part of our culture.  Don’t worry my American friends out there who are likely cringing… Not made from random pig parts, they are 100% lamb meat and taste totally different!  You dress the hot dog with raw and fried onions, ketchup, mustard, and remolaði sauces.  Traditionally you would also grab a can of coke and a Prince Polo bar too if you want to go full on Icelandic.  Doesn’t sound like fun?  Try traditional Icelandic meat soup, sold at almost all of the fuel stops.

34- Systrafoss Waterfall can be found in the lovely town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.  Hiking to the top is super fun!  Yet another reason this waterfall makes our 55 Offbeat and Unique Things to do in Iceland list!

Offbeat Things to do in East Iceland

East Iceland is abundant with things to do all depending on your likes and dislikes.  In example, if you’re a nature lover, hiker, a foodie, or a budding photographer.  If you plan to visit East Iceland wedding locations you’ve come to the right planner!  East Iceland has been home to one of our favorite unique Iceland hiking elopements too!

35- Take the leap off the worlds first and only Glacier Zipline with Ice Pic Journeys!  You can book a Glacier Zipline Summer (April-Sept) experience or Winter  Zipline (Oct-March) adventure.

36- Pay a visit to the less touristy Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon!  Even overnight on the offbeat glacier lagoon too!

37- Who doesn’t love an amazingly shaped mountain?  A must do if you’re heading towards East Iceland is visiting Vestrahorn Mountain and Viking Village.  Park at the cafe and make sure you pay the landowners per person admittance fee.

38- Stuff your faces with langoustine soup at the BEST lobster place in the east, Pakkhús.

39- Lay your eyes on one of the most adorable churches in Iceland, Seyðisfjarðarkirkja.  It’s blue and in an charming town.

40- Care to explore a village barely anyone ever goes?  If you’re planning a trip to Iceland in July and August, you should visit Mjóifjörður.  Crazy place full of history, mystery, shipwrecks, and a gorgeous waterfall!  This place is one of our favorite hidden gems in Iceland and for sure why it makes our 55 Offbeat and Unique Things to do in Iceland agenda!

41- Find your way to the town of Seydisfjordur and you’ll pass Gufufoss Waterfall on the way.  Spend a few minutes checking it out and stretching your legs (it’s a 2-5 minute walk but park carefully!)

42- Are you a hiker and going to East Iceland? Hengifoss is often a waterfall that is overlooked.  Embark on a 45-60 minute walk from the car park and you’ll be there!  Afterwards, head over to Vök Baths.

43- Ever hear the joke about getting lost in an Icelandic forest?  Just stand up   There is in my opinion the most beautiful forest in Iceland found in the East called, Hallormsstaðaskógur.  There are lots of amazing views, waterfalls, and caves in this forest area begging for you to explore it!

Northern Iceland, What offbeat Things to Do!

Oh la la, Northern Iceland.  Did you ever see our Godafoss Waterfall Elopement we did in circa 2015?  It’s a pretty place to explore and the good news is that you don’t need a super jeep to get to almost everything.  Although, our team does not do much in Northern Iceland these days because our private locations are in the South.  But, that doesn’t mean we cannot share with you some super cool offbeat things to do in Northern Iceland or some fabulous hidden gems!

44- Maybe you’ve seen Stone Henge?  Here in Iceland, we have our own version with a twist, called Arctic Henge in Raufarhöfn!  Stopping here fits in perfectly with our 55 Offbeat and Unique Things to do in Iceland!

45- Unique textures and tones with less tourists can be found in a valley near to Lake Mývatn with the name of Hljóðaklettar.

46- A less touristy place to go whale watching is in the quaint town of Husavik.  Try our friends at Gentle Giants!

47- Take a long drive around the village of Siglufjörður, it’s crazy cute!

48- Hofsósi Swimming Pool is self proclaimed the nicest swimming pool in Iceland… And we might agree!  Take a visit and judge for yourself!  Or checkout Geosea!

49- Pack a picnic and head over to one of our personal favorite locations… Hike along the cliffs of Hvítserkur to get away from the tourists and enjoy bird watching, the waves, and the sounds.

West Iceland Offbeat Adventure Ideas

There are magical Peninsulas in Iceland called the Snaefellsness and the West Fjords.  There are countless folklore stories proclaiming such and most of our couples would agree that there is a feeling of magic and wander in the air.  We no longer offer weddings in the Snaefellsness or the West Fjords as it has become to saturated with the growth of tourism and there is not enough super jeep routes to tick all of our boxes or keep our interest.  However, we are thrilled to have our clients experience it!

As a matter of fact, we remember how desolate the area once was and it breaks our heart how it’s changed.  For instance, in Circa 2014, our clients Tiffany and Brian had the most inspiring wedding photos at Kirkjufellsfoss.  Way back when Kirkjufellfoss didn’t have ropes or barriers.  It feels like a very different place now.  But don’t fret!  We are not going to share with you the some of the less touristy places to discover as part of 55 Offbeat and Unique Things to do in Iceland post today!!

50- The most offbeat area in the West Fjords in our opinion is the Látrabjarg Cliffs.  But a word of warning, it is a commitment in time to get there!

51- Second to the above would be a beautiful unique looking place called Rauðisandur Beach.  Hello Red Beach, you for sure make our list of 55 Offbeat and Unique Things to do in Iceland!

52- Within the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, you’ll find a golden sand beach that will make you swoon!  Skarðsvík Beach is the perfect place to relax, picnic, or hike along cliffs!

53- Grundarfoss Waterfall is a less touristy waterfall (compared to Kirkjufellfoss) that can be found within the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.  It’s one not to miss!

54- Do the hike from Malarrif  Lighthouse to Londrangar Basalt Rock Formation.

55- Djúpalónssandur & Shipwreck Beach (where the ship wreck of the English Trawler Epine resides).  You can easily spend hours here exploring along the beach and the cliffs!  Plus there is enough space to spread out and find your own nook away from the tourists.
