Why Visit Kvernufoss Waterfall?

Next, unlike many of Iceland’s popular tourist spots, Kvernufoss still a bit more offbeat than many.  With its dramatic gorge, lush green cliffs, and the ability to walk behind the waterfall itself, it’s a magical and intimate place.  Also, maybe a great place for waterfall wedding photos?  Although, please be aware, that since our team last photographed there in 2017, things have changed significantly.  For example, to combat the traffic and preserve the landscape features ropes, signs, and barriers have been put up.  Please ensure you respect the changes the landowners have made.

Kvernufoss, Where is it?

Kvernufoss is located in South Iceland.  In fact, it is just a 2-minute drive (or 10–15 minute walk) from the Skógar Museum.  Further, the falls, sit tucked away in the Kverna River gorge, often overlooked because travelers focus solely on Skógafoss.  Likely, what makes Kvernufoss such a unique and serene find to visitors!

Firstly, you’ll want to follow Route 1 (Ring Road) East of the city limits of Reykjavik.  Secondly, expect to drive ~2.5 hours one way if you start from the city.  Thirdly, you’ll take a LEFT from main road towards the village or Skogar.  However, stay straight, do not turn left towards Skógafoss.  Why?  Because you need to continue towards the Skógar Museum.  Before the road dead ends, you’ll take a RIGHT towards the museum and Freya Cafe.  Then you’ll continue to follow the road down to the parking lot for the waterfall.  Next, you’ll see a formal paid parking sign which you need to do to park (or download the Parka app and pay via that).

How to Hike to Kvernufoss

The hike to Kvernufoss is relatively easy and fabulous for most fitness levels.  Here’s a step by step of the hike so you can see what to expect…

• Google Map Link
• Distance: Approximately 1.5 km (round trip)
• Hike Time: 30–45 minutes round trip
• Trailhead: Park at the Skógar Museum.  Head to the right of the museum building where you’ll see a small gate and signpost marking the trail.
• Terrain: The path follows a grassy trail into a narrow gorge.  You’ll walk alongside the river and navigate a few rocky areas, so sturdy shoes are recommended.

Can You Walk Behind Kvernufoss?

Heck Yes!  And that’s part of the allure of the location!  Much like its famous cousin Seljalandsfoss, Kvernufoss allows hikers to walk behind (of course depending on weather and water levels).  Just be cautious: the rocks can be slippery, especially during icy and wet conditions.  Remember to pack micro-spikes in your “go bag” if coming between November-March!

When Is the Best Time to Visit Kvernufoss?

In conclusion, the trail to Kvernufoss Waterfall is best explored from Spring (April) through mid Autumn (October) when the path is snow and ice free and safe. Also, Summer (June-August) offers the vibrant vibrant green scenery and longer daylight hours.  Which translates to fewer people between the hours of 5-8am and 8-midnight!  Although you can likely visit year round… You do need to prepare if coming during the winter months.  For example, the path may be icy or have snow drifts and other hazardous hanging down from the cliffs above, and walking behind the waterfall is not advisable.

So then here is the million dollar question… Why should you choose to spend a few nights in this magical South Iceland village versus just driving through it?  Short Answer: Because since 2015, Vik has quickly become a DESTINATION!  In fact, you could easily spend 3 nights here and still leaving wanting to do and see more…

To illustrate, from the moment I (Ann Peters) first visited and drove down the iconic mountain pass, Reynisfjall going on two decades ago, this tiny town captured by heart and soul.  Although not really a believer in “past lives” I felt a connection to this place that was on another level.  No other place out of the 100+ countries I’ve spent time in provided such a like “home” vibe to me.  And each time I would return the connection felt deeper.  Likely the exact reason the place led me to meeting my soulmate, my husband David Geir and why we chose to build our #vikdreamhouse.

How to Visit Vik:

Alright, so now that you are intrigued… You might be wondering specs on the town and where it is…

First, it is the southernmost village on the mainland of Iceland and home to around ~800 residents depending on the time of year.  Second, despite its small size, Vík is a significant stop along the famous Ring Road (Route 1).  There are countless stunning views, unique attractions, fantastic places to stay and eat too!  Third, the village is approximately 186 km (115 miles) from Reykjavík, making it a scenic two-and-a-half-hour drive from the capital.  Likely a bit more depending on weather conditions).   Fourth, if you’re arriving in Iceland at Keflavík International Airport (KEF), expect a drive of about three hours to reach Vík.

A waypoint to get up to the famed Katla Glacier area is the town of Vik.  There are several local tour operators who specialize in Katla Ice Cave experiences.  Additionally, we would like to call our Gravel Travel, as they go to their own exclusive less touristy ice cave that the other big box operators don’t go to.

#20- Hike to a Mountaintop Viking Burial Site

A 10 minute or so drive out of town will lead you to one of the best things to do in Vik… For example, the hike to Hjörleifshöfði which is an important historical spot where a famed Viking is assumed to be buried.  Special Note: This is where the famed “Yoda Cave” is located.  But also be aware, there is a parking fee to drive back here, it’s also best to have a 4×4 as well.

#21- Loftsalahellir Cave

Ready to explore an offbeat cave with a phenomenal view?  Loftsalahellir Cave is a perfect choice!  While on your way to Dyrholaey make sure you stop to check it out.

#22- Dyrhólaey Lighthouse & Sea Cliff

A picturesque location that is a few minutes outside of the town, is Dyrhólaey Lighthouse and the famed sea cliff with a hole in it.  Add it to your schedule as you think about the best things to do in Vik!

Everyone loves and appreciates a picturesque hike, right?  Well how about we take that idea up a notch slightly for those of you who enjoy a tiny bit more on the adventure but adding in canyoneering!  Now canyoneering in Iceland happens at different levels.  But there are a handful of canyons that are simple enough to do on your own.

For instance today’s fabulous Iceland Wedding Planner blog post on Westfjords Goðafoss Waterfall and Nauthúsagil Waterfall.  Both of them allow you to hop around on the rocks and only go into water that is approximately knee height.  Use this fabulous guide to find yourself there experiencing!

Furthermore, did you know there is a legend also surrounding this fabulous waterfall?  For instance, the story goes that a priest traveling through the area threw his old gods idols into it.  Therefore, it’s name derives from that action.

Step 1: Plan Your Visit to Bjarnarfjörður

Bjarnarfjörður, is located in the Westfjords region of Iceland.  Additionally, it is a remote and picturesque area known for its tranquil fjords, lush valleys, and dramatic coastlines.  Unlike the more famous Goðafoss near Akureyri, this Goðafoss offers a quieter, more intimate experience.

When to Visit:

Ideally, the best time to visit the area is in summer months (June to August).  To illustrate, the Icelandic weather will be warmer weather and you have longer days to enjoy road tripping!  Additionally, if canyoneering you’ll appreciate the warmer water temps too!!

Transportation:

Renting a 4×4 vehicle is recommended as getting to the Westfjords Goðafoss Waterfall you’ll experience unpaved gravel roads.

Arrive Prepared:

Packing a “go bag” when traveling around Iceland can be key to a successful day.  Especially while exploring remote areas.

Warm, Waterproof Clothing: Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable as we all know!

Sturdy Hiking Boots: The terrain around the waterfall can be slippery.

Step 2: Finding Your Way to Bjarnarfjörður

Although, Westfjords Goðafoss in Bjarnarfjörður may not have the same level of fame as its northern namesake… But its charm lies in its seclusion and untouched beauty!  However, you may be curious on  how you get there, right?  Driving Directions: From Reykjavík, expect a 3.5-4 hour drive one way.  You’ll take Route 1 North head towards the Westfjords via Route 60 and 61.  Fun Fact: It is just down the street from the local area pool and campsite named, Laugarhóll.  GPS Coordinates: 65.783333; -21.5025749 and check out this Google Map Link.

Step 3: Explore the Waterfall and Surrounding Area

Upon arrival, take your time to explore the area around Goðafoss.  For instance, you can venture to both sides of the canyon and then inside.

• Viewpoints: The waterfall is surrounded by natural vantage points, each offering unique perspectives. Personal Recommendation: The best view of the Westfjords Goðafoss Waterfall is from the RIGHT side.
• Photography Tips: Visit during early morning (dawn light) or golden hour for soft, natural light.  Use a tripod for long-exposure shots to capture the silky flow of water.
• Nearby Activities: Combine your visit with a trip to the local pool or other hot springs, where you can relax and soak in the scenery.

How does an Elopement Expedition Feel & Look:

1. Multi-Day Commitment: Elopement expeditions are typically multi-day journeys.  You’ll spend several days traveling with your elopement photographer.  Where they will capture the diversity of landscapes and embracing the journey as part of your wedding experience.

Remote and Isolated Locations: Expeditions take you off the beaten path, where you might explore glacier caves, volcanic craters, highland areas, islands, and even massive icebergs in some cases.  These secluded locations allow for a more intimate and unspoiled backdrops that few travelers ever see.  Talk about a variety of wedding photos!
3. Intensive Preparation and Planning: Given the remote nature of an elopement expedition and cost, careful planning is required.  Usually somewhere between 6 – 24 months.  This includes selecting locations and activities, arranging transportation.  Likely preparing for challenging hikes, and securing overnight accommodations that can range from rugged mountain huts to luxury eco-lodges or even camping with once in a lifetime views!

Being Diagnosed with Celiac Disease in Iceland

Ann here, founder of Iceland Wedding Planner…  Shall we embark on story time with Ann?  At the start of this year, I was unexpectedly diagnosed with Celiac Disease.  First, it begins with my dentist mentioning I might have beginning signs of acid reflux.  So getting diagnosed sooner than later would lessen the damage and cost.  Especially if anything were to happen in the future with my teeth.  Second, under her advice I went to my General Practitioner and got a referral to a gastro doctor.  Which to my surprise means you’re scheduled for an endoscopy as your first appointment.

Third, after the endoscopy the gastroenterologist confirmed that my villi were completely flattened (total villous atrophy) and that visual means he suspects I have Celiac Disease.  But because I carry no symptoms, I am a silent-Celiac.  Therefore, even one speck of gluten does damage to my insides.  Which makes me absolutely paranoid about eating.  Because who the heck wants to end up with stomach cancer or the many other ailments that could happen should I not be on a strict gluten free with no cross contamination diet.  #noone

Fourth, the days following, the biopsy and blood work further confirmed the diagnosis, so “Hello Iceland Gluten Free Lifestyle” overnight!  Likewise, just like anyone sucker punched with that diagnosis, I went down the rabbit hole of grieving all of the American junk food that I would never ever enjoy again for the first few weeks.  Fifth, I hired a nutritionist to help me navigate through what is actually Celiac-safe options at the grocery stores and getting back to the basics of food nourishment.  Sixth, I live in the tiny town of Vik Iceland and I’m very strict about cross contamination so take my advice with a grain of salt if you’re gluten free but not Celiac.

Is Iceland Good for Gluten Free or Celiac People?

When you’re contemplating visiting Iceland you might wonder if there are gluten free and Celiac safe options…  Honestly, it could be better if you’re comparing to more mainstream populated countries like North America, France, Germany, etc.  I’ve travelled since my diagnoses and instant jealousy ensues.  Why?  Because there are huge aisles and options in other countries, even gluten free devoted bakeries and restaurants.

On the other hand, considering Iceland gluten free, there is far less options.  Our tiny island in the North Atlantic, Iceland does not have any 100% gluten free establishments.  But then that just means you need to stick to the basics.  For instance protein, fruits, vegetables, and pre-packaged items.  Overall, just about everywhere can offer an Iceland gluten free foot option (IE, burger without a bun, salad, etc) so if you are sensitive to gluten don’t be fearful.

Unfortunately, just like anywhere, we Celiac folks will have to see if the restaurant or cafe has an understanding of our disease dynamics.  To illustrate, where gluten can be lurking (natural flavors, seasonings, and some folks even think potatoes have gluten!).  Also as we all know they need to willing to go the extra mile to ensure no cross contamination.  For example, asking the staff to thorough clean workspaces, change gloves, and be diligent of not touching any other food items while preparing.

Gluten Free Iceland Applications:

Likely, you might wonder if there are any helpful websites or applications that can aid you on your gluten free Iceland mission.  Additionally, downloading the Kronan phone app and browsing the website helps as they diligently mark their productions with symbols.  For example, dairy free, gluten free, etc when it is.  However, label reading in store is still important to do incase of human error.

Furthermore, I personally log my experiences with restaurants on the Find Me Gluten Free app (Please do this too if you come!).  Also, if you’re looking for feedback from locals directly, join the Facebook Group named, “Glútenlaust á Íslandi.”  But do make sure you do a “search” before asking a question in case it’s already been discussed.  Additionally, buying several “Celiac Disease” cards to hand to restaurant servers (English and Icelandic) to review can go a long way as an extra precaution.  Worth the investment in my opinion!

Words for Gluten in Icelandic:

“Ég er með glutenóþol” = I have a gluten intolerance.

Hveti = Wheat

Hafra = Oats

Rúgmjöl = Rye Flour

Bygg = Barley

Iceland Grocery Stores for Gluten Free Food

Folks who have allergies, intolerances, and immunocompromising diseases may feel safer in renting apartments or self-catering options when journeying around Iceland.  I’m with you, frankly!  Bringing along my pre-made food (by me) in my Yeti cooler has become a staple to my routine.  But you might be curious to know where I stock up?

I live in the tiny ~800 person Southern town of Vik Iceland where 60% of the population is foreigners.  Which means we have 1 grocery store and grocery stores with more options are 2.5-3 hours away in Reykjavik.  Moreover, my go to’s are as follows:

Iceland Gluten Free Places to Buy Groceries:

1. Fjarðarkaup– Hands down my favorite store with the best and biggest selection for gluten free in Iceland.  Anytime I am in Reykjavik I stock up!  At the time this Iceland Wedding Planner blog post is written, the gluten free aisle was the last to the left and some additional items are found in the taco aisle, fruits, veggies, and meats too.
2. Kostur– Our token American store in Iceland offers a nice selection of gluten free and celiac safe options.
3. Kronan– The majority of their gluten free selection is found near the bread area but some additional ones are spread around the store (IE, Taco aisle and pasta aisle).  Also the pre-packaged meat area has indications on pepperoni and some other meats that they are without gluten, soy, or allergies).  Further, you’ll find a small selection of Schar products (breads, pretzels, cookies, crackers, pizza crust, etc).
4. Netto– Their selection is found by the health food area and is small but decent.  Worth a look!
5. Pris– Newest grocery store to Iceland and they are trying to slowly introducing new gluten free options.  Haven’t been but so says the Iceland gluten free group!
6. Bonus– Super small variety and not worth a stop in my opinion.  Honestly, I’ve been disappointed almost every time.  However, if you have an oven and you look carefully through the frozen section you might be able to find gluten free muffins and bread in there!
7. Hagkaup– This store is the most expensive grocery store in Iceland and can be hit or miss with gluten free items.
8. Kjötkompaní– Icelandic Butcher.  Remind them to change their gloves if you are Celiac!
9. Costco– Is a fabulous spot to grab certified gluten free snacks, meat, veggies, and fruit!
10. Heilsuhúsið– Our token health food store.
11. Bring Food from Home!  If you desire specific or must have things or 100% seasonings, etc I encourage you to bring your own!

A few thoughts on grocery shopping in Iceland and needing to be gluten free… To illustrate, if you are traveling around it’s best to stock up in Reykjavik before heading out of the city limits.  Why?  Selection and in stock items are 50/50, especially during summer in Iceland (we have gone WEEKS without GF sandwich bread in the South).  I’ve seen my the Kronan in Vik ransacked with ZERO gluten free items (even meat and quality veggies / fruit) when the high season is upon us.  Therefore, make sure you take your chance to stock up before embarking on your Ring Road journey.  A collapsible cooler is ideal to bring!

Iceland Gluten Free & Celiac Safe Restaurants

Alright, so here’s the topic you’ve been waiting for!  Dinning out in Iceland gluten free and finding restaurants are Celiac safe.  Frankly, I’m a super strict Celiac when it comes to eating out.  For example, I play the 20 questions game of asking how the food is stored, prepared, shared spaces, the whole gamut.

One thing to REALLY BE AWARE OF: Many restaurants in Iceland boast an item is “gluten free” but it’s not at it’s base.  Meaning may be gluten free from them to you but they do not check the back base ingredients to ensure 100%.  For example, soup stock, spices, or using ingredients that are “gluten free” but not free from cross contamination which in my opinion SCARY for Celiac’s!  Cannot tell you how many times I’ve run into this more often than not and then the tune of the server / chef is that they cannot guarantee it’s 100%, rather “95%.”

But as I alluded to above, almost every restaurant in Iceland can typically offer a gluten free modification.  Here is a list of Iceland Gluten Free Restaurants by Region for ease of referencing during your Iceland self-drive itinerary!  NOTE: Iceland hasn’t gotten on the labeling their menu bus yet for gluten free as of the time this blog post was written (September 2024).

• Fuego (inside Hlemmur Mathöll food hall): They serve corn tacos at the time this blog post was written.

• Hafnartorg Gallery Food Hall in downtown Reykjavik – The Italian place (La Trattoria) I order the ribeye safely.
• Lóa Restaurant
• Mama Reykjavik
• Mathús Garðabæjar – Outside of Reykjavik City limits

• N1 Hvolsvöllur Fuel Station – Sometimes has gluten free sandwiches in the cooler you can warm up
• Ice Cave Bistro in Vik-  There is curry and Icelandic Meat Soup that is gluten free plus they pair it with gluten free bread by request.  NOTE: I no longer order the Meat Soup because their stock has gluten.  The curry scares me as it is in a closed buffet (IE worker dishes) so I stick to the meat soup.  They also say their salads are gluten free but I’m not risking the cross contamination in the buffet.
• The Berg inside Hotel Vik
• Black Crust Pizzeria in Vik –Note: I’m a local to Vik and I do not eat here due to their processes in cross contamination.  I make my own pizza with gluten free pepperoni and Schar crust (Also be aware, that is all they are using here is this same premade Schar crust, not made there).
• Sudur Vik in Vik  –Note: They have recently added labeling to their new menu showcasing “GF” items.
• The Soup Company in Vik –Note: Same as above!
• Hotel Klaustur Restaurant in Kirkjubæjarklaustur
• Restaurant Gigur – Kirkjubæjarklaustur (inside Hotel Laki)

For Celiac safe restaurants in Iceland, it’s hit or miss for me on cross contamination.  When I find safe or unsafe places I log it into Find my Gluten Free app.  Honestly though, I’m scared to death to eat out.  Regardless, there are a few places I’ve grown to trust this last year…

• 1. Hafnartorg Gallery Food Hall in downtown Reykjavik – The Italian place (La Trattoria) I order the ribeye safely.
  2. Olifa – La Madre Pizza in Reykjavik –Make it clear you’re Celiac and remind them about their CC process and delight in a Cesar salad and delicious gluten free pizza of your choice!!
  3. Mathús Garðabæjar – Outside of Reykjavik.  Hello beef carpaccio and a delicious salad!
  4. Silli Kokkur – Outside of Reykjavik with the BEST gluten free burgers I have had in Iceland!  …and they have it on the menu as 100% gluten free!
  5. Byrja – In Selfoss this is my go to… Best and safest Caesar Salad!
  6. Hotel Stracta Bistro in Hella can do a basic pan fried Arctic Char with potatoes in olive oil / salt with no cross.
  7. Midgard Restaurant & Bar (Hvolsvöllur)  -Delicious Adventure Burger they can make Celiac Safe!
  8. Sudur Vik in Vik  –Note: They have recently added labeling to their new menu showcasing “GF” items (see the Find Me Gluten Free app for photos of it)
  9. The Berg inside Hotel Vik – Almost everything on their menu is gluten free and they understand no cross contamination.
  10. Klaustur Restaurant – Within the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.  The chef Einar is very aware of Celiac Disease and will modify the dishes accordingly and do his best to ensure everything is cleaned and no cross contamination happens.
  11. Restaurant Gigur – Kirkjubæjarklaustur (inside Hotel Laki)
  12. Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon Near Höfn – Restaurant inside will prepare your food in a separate space, just ask!
  13. Otto Matur & Drykkur – In Höfn, went out of their way to reassure me food was 100% cross contamination free!

This list is from my current and personal experience as a diagnosed Celiac living in Iceland.  Folks may have positive experiences outside of this list, but these are the only tried and trusted I’m comfortable standing behind.  Please always do your due diligence in advocating for yourself and asking all the questions that make you feel comfortable dining somewhere.

The Experience

Let’s dive in on what the actual glacier zipline tour is really like…

First, you’ll meet the Ice Pic Journeys driver-guide at the famed Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.  Second, you’ll hop into their no frills 4×4 to be whisked away to Europe’s largest glacier.  After a short hike past a sweet little waterfall you will be at the glaciers edge.  Third, you’ll be briefed and gear up (Hello helmets and crampons!) to begin your hike on to the glacier.

Fourth, if you book during wintertime (Oct-April) you’ll get the opportunity to experience an ice cave in addition to the glacier zipline.  However, in summertime (May-Sept) you’ll enjoy a thrilling glacier hike with maybe a icy bonus feature.  Fifth, you can expect your hike to be between 3-6ish miles round trip.

Next, once you’ve made your way up the glacier and to the elevation the glacier zipline you’ll have a crazy WOW moment.  To illustrate, take a few minutes to savor the view while the guide is setting up and checking the ropes.  It truly is inspiring no matter the weather in Iceland!

Take the Leap!

So as I alluded to above, I think of myself as being pretty badass and not phased by much.  Meaning, I have been ready to embark on Iceland’s glacier zipline for months!  But when I was actually getting the instruction and having my toes on the steps of the giant sinkhole… Panic may or may not have set in a bit!

Okay, so when I took the leap, I screamed!  Like I said, it got me.  Staring down into the deep dark abys of a vertical ice cave is a sobering moment.  Meanwhile at the same time it’s invigorating!!  #worthit

Typically you get 2 goes at gliding across this hole in the glacier.  Furthermore, if you want the iconic photos in the middle, you’ll want to pull yourself across and strike a pose!  Scary fun shit, just do it!  #noregrets  After everyone in the group has had their time you journey back down the glacier to the 4×4 and back to the lagoon.  I assure you, you’ll be left craving more!

(Þórsmörk) Thorsmork Hiking Trails

An area of the highlands that is mostly accessible year round with the right vehicle is named, Þórsmörk (Thorsmork).  Firstly, it is within South Iceland.  Second, if you have visited or will visit the iconic Seljalandsfoss Waterfall you were close!  For example, if you would have continued up the road where it shifts to an F-Road you would be on your way there.  Third, the area is filled with dynamic hiking routes like the following:

Valahnúkur

Stakkholtsgjá

Nauthúsagil Waterfall

But there are actually many more picturesque hikes within to embark on!  For instance, today’s Iceland Wedding Planner featured location is a waterfall named Stigafoss.

How to Find Stigafoss

In order to get to Thorsmork and Stigafoss, you will need a 4×4 vehicle or a super jeep depending on the season and conditions.  Why?  Because the road is an F-Road, has river crossings and is deeply rutted with potholes.  Please ensure your vehicle is insured for F-Roads before venturing on.

Meanwhile, the best land marker to get you on your way there would be to first map to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall in South Iceland which is between the tiny town of Hvolsvöllur and Skogar (Skogafoss Waterfall).

Drive Times (one way depending on traffic):

• Downtown Reykjavik to Stigafoss = 2.5 hours
• Selfoss to Stigafoss Waterfall = 1.5 hour
• From Hvolsvöllur = 1 hour
• Vik to Stigafoss = 1.5 hour

Once you pass the turn off going to Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui Waterfalls, you’ll keep going straight on 249 for 5 kilometers.  Next, the road changes from 249 to F-249.  There are river crossings but sometimes they dry up.  But again, please make sure you’re in the right kind of vehicle so no mishaps occur.  You’ll stay on F-249 for ~11km or so and you’ll see the waterfall on your RIGHT side.  Note: If not in a super jeep or truck on at least 35” tires, it may be best to hike from the main road (adds ~15 minutes to your journey).  After all, better safe than sorry!

Stigafoss Hiking Specs

Stigafoss is below the subglacial volcano Eyjafjallajökull.  Truly a picturesque and exciting hike in Iceland!

• Distance: ~1 km / .6 miles round trip from the F-Road and half that if you take the bumpy track.
• Hike Times: 15-30 minutes depending on pace / situation.
• Terrain: Large rocks, dirt, mud, stone, loose rocks, grass in parts, and several foot river crossings.
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Elevation Gain: ~200 feet
• Waterfall Height: ~ 450 feet tall

• Best Time to Hike: Mid-May to September

Hot Springs in Iceland

When you’re self-driving around Iceland as a couple you may want to find some romantic things to do!  And could there be anything more romantic than taking a hike with a bottle of champagne and relaxing in a hot spring?!  Some of the best hot springs in the world are in Iceland.  Add in a phenomenal view and you have a moment in time you’ll never ever forget.  …Now back to Skatalaug!

Reykjanes Peninsula

As you may know, the Reykjanes Peninsula is steeped in geology.  After all, our last 7 volcano eruptions have all happened in this region in Iceland.  In fact, some day that when this area erupts according to history, it begins decades of volcanic unrest.  Therefore, it’s fair to say the Reykjanes Peninsula is full of incredible natural mind-blowing wonders and history.  Likely why the Skatalaug hot spring has a home within too!

The direction translation of Skatalaug is boy scout pool.  Not only is this spot for two within the amazing Reykjanes Peninsula, but it’s nested within the beautiful Sveifluháls ridge (Translation: Swing Mountains).  So the views you see are of the mountains and the famed Kleifarvatn Lake.  Very picturesque!

But a little word of warning… As you’ll see below, it is a VERY EARTHY hot spring with zero infrastructure.  So expect to be covered in mud and minerals when you get out.  Maybe make a day out of exploring this area too!  For example, before or after you can check out Seltun Geothermal, the heart shaped mountain, the lake, and Krýsuvíkurkirkja.

How to Find Skatalaug

Now next obvious question is how the heck do you get to Skatalaug hot spring?  Follow the specs and step by step directions below to get yourself there…

ICELAND HOT SPRING SPECS:

• Distance: ~0.25 miles round trip (~200 meters one way).
• Hike Time: 5-10 minutes round trip plus time spent in the Skatalaug hot springs.
• Path: No markers, follow the small river up from the parking lot.
• Terrain:  Dirt/mud, grass, marsh or swamp.
• Elevation Gain: 0
• Difficulty: Easy
• Skatalaug Parking Lot: Google Map
• GPS Coordinates for Parking: 63°54’17.2″N 22°02’20.4″W
• Best Time to Hike: All Year (however the road can be challenging if snow or ice)
• Water Temperature: ~95 °F or 35 °C
• Note: There are no changing rooms, bathrooms, or trashcans.  Therefore, please be respectful and LEAVE NO TRACE!

Natural Hot Springs Near Reykjavik

If you’re staying within the city limits or slightly outside of Reykjavik you may be curious about offbeat things to do.  Or maybe the best Iceland tours or romantic things to do or the best hot springs to try, right?  Beyhond today’s feature, Englandshverir hot springs, other to consider in the area would be Sky Lagoon or Hvammsvik.

How to get there Englandshverir

Englandshverir hot springs is best paired with your Iceland self drive itinerary.  As you will need to drive yourself to this fabulous spot!  Meanwhile, it would be easy to add it in to your day if you are exploring the Golden Circle, Whale Fjord (near to Glymur Waterfall), or heading up to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.  To illustrate, here are some approximate drive times from popular locations:

• From Reykjavik City Limits: ~1 hour 45 minutes
• Coming from Thingvellir National Park: ~1 hour 45 minutes
• From Glymur Waterfall / Whale Fjord: ~1 hour 15 minutes
• Heading down from the Snaefellsnes (Kirkjufellsfossar): ~2 hours

Let’s look at driving directions from Reykjavik to Englandshverir Hot Springs… First, jump on to the main road heading out of town which is Route 49.  Second, take Þjóðvegur 1 (Route 1 / Ring Road) towards the North approximately 90 km.  Third, you’ll leave Route 1 turning RIGHT onto Route #52 which is Borgarfjarðarbraut. Fourth, stay on road this for ~89km.  Fifth, turn RIGHT onto Route #52 for ~24km. 

But be aware this road is not paved and has lots of potholes and ditches on the side, so take it slow!  Next, you’ll pass by the lovely Fitjarfoss Waterfall (right hand side) and shortly after (750 meters / 1 minute) there will be another pull off on the RIGHT side and a drive you take down where you will see a shed harnessing the geothermal heat from the area.  Park here.  Maybe even change too if you’re shy and do not want to do it in the open.

Englandshverir Hot Springs Hike Details

Once you’re parked and have all your things you you’re ready to hike over the river and enjoy the hot spring (IE, bathing suit and towel)!

Iceland Hot Spring Specs:

• Distance: ~0.34 miles round trip (~547 meters).
• Hike Times: 10-15 minutes round trip plus time spent in the Englandshverir hot springs.
• Path: There are small blue markers you’ll see in the photos below once you cross the river.
• Terrain:  Loose rocks, dirt/mud, grass, marsh, and river crossing by foot (ankle to knee high).
• Elevation Gain: ~15 feet
• Difficulty: Easy but there is a river crossing by foot or take the water pipe across.
• Englandshverir Parking Lot: Google Map
• GPS Coordinates of Best Sitting Spot: 64°29’29.1″N 21°10’35.8″W
• Best Time to Hike: May to Mid-October (mainly can be because the road can be challenging if snow)
• Water Temperature: ~100 °F or 37 °C (Note: different sections of the river have different heat levels.  The further up you go the hotter it will be).
• Note: There are no changing rooms, bathrooms, or trashcans.  Therefore, please LEAVE NO TRACE!
