Romantic Experiences in Iceland

Likely, if you’re coming to Iceland with your partner you want to share in a special moment or two.  What better way to do that than checking out the 25 most romantic things to do!  Well, there are two experiences we would love to add to that list we recently had ourselves…  Firstly, booking the private luxury tour with Fjallsárlón Boat Tours is a fantastic way to spend 2 hours together.

For example you get the combination of an exclusive zodiac ride around the lagoon, champagne, and meal with a glacier view!   Secondly, you dock on your own private island, have a short walk up to a cozy “bubble.”  Note: We upgraded our meal to a hot BBQ three course dinner and brought a vintage bottle of Cristal with us (they supplied a standard Moët).

Further, this is 100% the way to go if you’re on your a self drive Iceland honeymoon, looking for a unique proposal location or want to celebrate an occasion in an unforgettable way!  Thirdly, pairing this journey with a stay in the Iceland Igloo (aka Aurora Hut) is the epitome of feeling like a VIP!

Is there an Iceland Igloo Hotel?

At least a few times a month we get inquires about couples wanting to be married in Iceland and stay in an igloo.  However, up until July 2022, a true Iceland igloo hotel did not exist.  But the closest thing to an experience like at Kakslauttanen Igloo Resort in Lapland, was maybe the plastic bubble hotel or the four Panorama Glass Cabins.  But not really, those do not have the same epicness attached to them.

Therefore, the excitement was off the charts when the folks at Fjallsárlón set out to invest in the floating Aurora Huts.  Then created the once in a lifetime experience of staying on an Iceland igloo!  To illustrate, this place has a completely different remoteness vibe.  Which I’m guessing most folks would rather have versus being on land.

What it’s like to Stay in the Aurora Huts on Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Although the price tag on the floating Iceland Igloo Hut may seem high at first, we can confirm it is worth every single penny!  And we have stayed at some of the most luxurious places and unique experiences in the world… From Africa to Antarctica and beyond so trust us!  First, you will arrive to Fjallsárlón Boat Tours meeting location (to the left of the Frost Restaurant) to check-in.  Next, plan to pack light (bring only what you need for the night / morning).  Second, you’ll hike 5-10 minutes down to the lagoon where a zodiac awaits you.

Third, you board and are shuttled to your remote Aurora Hut for the night.  Forth, your driver will give show you all of the amenities and features of the igloo and answer any questions.  Fifth, you enjoy fully with the one you love!

Meanwhile, what is the actual hut experience like?  Well, first we packed away our belongings underneath the bed.  At the same time, we also took out the outdoor table and chairs and put them on the deck.  Later, connected to the blue tooth speaker, jammed out to our fave playlist while we popped another bottle of vintage champagne and made a simple cheese tray.  Enjoying everything outside for a while and inside on the bed!

Furthermore, the remoteness of the area is serene and the 180 degree view is insane!  For instance, both Davíð and I were in complete awe as we watched the icebergs float by, flip, hearing and seeing the glacier outlet calving!  Truly a hypnagogic nature experience!!  In the morning, the only regret was not bringing hot chocolate packets with us.  As we both would have preferred that over their coffee and fruity / flowery tea selection.  Lastly, we packed up and waited for our zodiac driver to arrive for our checkout.

Iceland Glacier Hut Features:

• 180° view of the Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon.
• Double Bed with separate comforters (suitcase storage underneath).
• WiFi.
• Heater.
• Built in Bluetooth Speaker.
• Small Kitchenette for two (with a sink, 2-burner stovetop, a few pots / pans, plates, bowls, cutlery and glasses).  But maybe considering eating before you come or grabbing a sandwich from the Frost Restaurant to bring along for ease of enjoyment.
• Cooler (in the floor).
• 5- USB Outlets (no other electrical / power options available for use).
• Mirror.
• 2- Towels (plus body wipes in the kitchenette drawers since no shower).
• Coffee / Tea and a kettle to boil water.
• Composting Toilet.
• 2 Outdoor Chairs and Table (under bed).
• Check-in Time for Iceland Igloo Boat: 5pm – 7pm.  Checkout: 8:30 – 10am.

Pros of the Igloo Hut in Iceland:

• Remoteness.
• Exclusive experience not many will have (only 2 huts available as of August 2022).
• Privacy, as you are far away from the second Iceland Aurora Hut and nowhere near tourists gaze.
• 180-degree glass window views of Vatnajökull Glacier (largest in Europe).
• Nothing about this experience impacts nature… 100% eco-friendly (after all it floats and leaves no trace which we actually witnessed)!
• Each Igloo Boat offers a different view of the glacier outlet.  We preferred the one closest to the glacier.
• Basic amenities (all you need) are included.

Cons of the Iceland Igloo Hut:

• Arriving to the check-in point felt rushed and chaotic.
• Once you’re there you cannot go anywhere (they are super strict).
• Beware: If you’re a kayaker / SUP enthusiast, you are not allowed to bring along or use during your stay.
• The top/ceiling of the glass igloo windows were covered and no way to take off during our stay.  Which prevents above views.
• Icebergs rock the boat / hut at times through the night.  Personally, we saw this as a fun nature feature but others may be startled by it while sleeping.
• The green anchoring ropes in the water are a bit of any eye sore if you’re of a photography mind.  Would be nice to see them change them out to something more neutral.

Romantic Elopement Accommodation

Very few places in Iceland do we fully recommend for a romantic vibe.  However these Iceland igloo huts / boat should not be missed!  From the view outside to the coziness of the view from the inside.  But I would not plan to stay for more than one night due to there not being any showers.

Romance comes in all different moments, shapes, and sizes.  Our idea of romance may not be yours, but we’re happy to share some of the most romantic things to do in Iceland with you today!!  Maybe you’ll even tweak a few ideas and make them your own as well, we dare you!

#1 Sea Arch Champagne Picnic

If you’re heading to Northern Iceland there is a dreamy spot tucked away in the Vatnsnes Peninsula named Hvítserkur.  It’s a 49 foot basalt stack that looks like a dragon drinking water.  It’s an easy hike alongside of the cliffs or beach to get away from any tourists (although can be muddy some days).  We suggest grabbing a bottle of bubbles from Duty Free upon arrival or Vínbúðin and having a champagne picnic for a few hours!

#2 Hiking & Hot Tubbing

What makes Iceland unique is that you can go for hike and reward yourself with a hot spring at the end.  The Húsafell Canyon Baths is a perfect example.  You can spend two hours of your day doing an exclusive hike to a private area where you will delight in gorgeous and unique geothermal pools!  Please note, this area is exclusive and only available to 20 or less folks at a time and booking a tour there is the only way to this private property area.

If that route doesn’t sound right for you, maybe try the hike to Glymur Waterfall and then end the day soaking in the hot tubs at Hotel Glymur!  Nothing like getting that “earned it” feeling on a hike with your favorite person and ending the day snuggling in a hot tub [Hello romance!]!

#3 Go Waterfall Hunting

Thousands of waterfalls await you… So why not make a day of it by building a day exploring as many as you can in one day!  Big, small, wide, powerful, volcanic, grassy, glacier or spring fed, etc the variety is endless!  Going waterfall hunting is high on our romantic things to do in Iceland list because there is a sense of awe, wonder, and absolute magic that comes with it!

#4 Hire a Local Guide for the Day

Wouldn’t it be super fun to see the Icelandic landscapes from the eyes of a local?  Someone to get you away from the crowds and show you pure sides of Iceland…  For example, our friends at East Highlanders offer a hike to Stuðlagil.  Perhaps even have it forever documented by a local photographer too?!  Imagine just the two of you bouncing around hand in hand getting lost in the moment, BLISS!  Meanwhile, if that’s not your thing, maybe have an Iceland luxury picnic at one of the locations the guide takes you… Few things compare to having cheese, wine, and an epic waterfall view!

#5 Múlagljúfur Canyon Hike

Care to hike to a lesser known place that exudes a romantic mystery only a place like Iceland can only contain?  Múlagljúfur Canyon encompasses everything you could want to see on a hike.  From seeing a river, waterfall, crazy shaped mountains, to the breathtaking a view of Öræfajökull volcano you’ll be in heaven on this hike!

To get there, you’ll need to be near to the famous glacier lagoon, Jökulsárlón.  Be prepared to hike in mud, slippery rocks, cross a river, and hike on gravel (proper hiking boots are a must).  Expect at least a one hour one way hike.  Note: Would be good to have a map or a local with you as the trail is not really visible and there are no markers guiding you.

#6 Spoil Yourself at the Retreat Hotel

If you’re a luxury hotel seeker, look no further than spending two nights basking in the lap of luxury of having your own private piece of the famed Blue Lagoon.  The Retreat Hotel offers a sublime experience especially if you book one of the Lagoon Suites which not only come with your own private lagoon but also a private butler to be at your beck and call.  Worth every single penny!  Their experiences begin at 1,109 Euro’s per night and range up to 1,800+ Euro’s per night.

#7 Star Gazing or Midnight Sun Exploring at Stokksnes

Grab some blankets, a picnic, and hot chocolate and head to Stokkenes on the Southeastern side of the Icelandic coast (near to Hofn).  There you will find the most stunning mountain called, Vestrahorn.  Perfect location to star gaze or explore during Iceland’s months of midnight sun!

Topping our personal list of romantic things to do in Iceland is visiting this stunning place year round.  During the season, this can be an amazing viewing area for Northern Lights.  However, the Northern Lights don’t even have to come out for it to be a magical night to remember!  Special Note: This is a private property area and there is a small admission fee, so please be respectful and pay it.

#8 Get Lost in Reykjavik

If the weather keeps you from venturing out of the city limits… Wander around historic buildings, countless museums, cozy café (we even have a Cat Cafe!), and sweet little shops (like the Handknitting Association)!

#9 Horseback Riding on a Black Beach

Likely, at some point you’ve found yourself curious about the Icelandic horse while trip planning.  Whether you love the style of their manes, intrigued by the clever trots, or the small body size, they are truly a unique beast!  What could be more romantic than taking one for a ride down one of Iceland’s iconic black sand beach landscapes?  Vik Horse Adventure will take you on an experience you’ll never forget!

#10 New Years Eve in Reykjavik

Very few things compare to spending New Years Eve in Reykjavik!  Icelanders go freaking NUTS with fireworks because from the 28th of December until December 31st, is one of the only times of the year it is legal to set off fireworks.  Fun Fact: There isn’t even really a “scheduled” show at a certain time, it is just all of the neighbors trying to out do each other, lol!

So book a hotel room downtown (our fave place to stay is the Tower Suites for prime watching from your window) and walk to the harbor or Hallgrímskirkja and delight in the big show!  Maybe even pair it with a NYE Celebration at Sea experience?!

#11 Helicopter Happy Hour in Iceland

Want to amp up the luxury and romance during your trip to Iceland?  For example, a perfect way to do that is book a private helicopter adventure!  Picture yourself having a helicopter happy hour in Iceland… I mean who freaking does that?!  Your friends or family that have been to Iceland surely didn’t!

#17  Exploring the Icelandic Highlands: Kerlingarfjöll

Heading into the Icelandic highlands comes with a real sense of adventure.  Exploring areas that are only accessible to the general population a handful of weeks out of the year makes it really special.  If you rent a F-Road worthy vehicle we encourage you to check out the mountain road Kjölur if you love geothermal areas and like to hike.  Many hours up into this mountain road, you’ll find a stunning mountain range called Kerlingarfjöll.  You can spend hours hiking and exploring here so plan accordingly and always make sure you’re very aware of the weather and road conditions.

#18 Semi Private Dinning Experience

Food feeds our relationships too!  So often while adventuring to new places we forget how much of an impact a luxury dining experience can be to sustaining the romance in our relationships.  After all, there is something really amazing about getting dressed up and embarking on a night on the town together!

One of our favorite places that oozes romance is the Grillmarkaðurinn (Grill Market).  In the middle of downtown Reykjavik with sexy lighting, earthy decor, delicious food, and an amazing wine and cocktail list sets the scene for a unforgettable night!  Iceland Travel Tip: Make in advance reservations and ask for a table for two in their semi-private dinning booths.

#23 Build a Sand Castles Together!

Have you ever built a sand castle in volcanic sands?  Try your hand at building a sand castle in every type Iceland has to offer… golden, black, or rocky!

#24 Take a Dip in a Historical Mountain Pool

Seljavallalaug is a mountain pool that was built in the 1930’s.  Located in Southern Iceland between Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss.  After a sweet 15-20 minute hike, you arrive to this gem.  NOTE: The area has become a bit touristy (and dirty, don’t plan to use the changing room) so we suggest going early in the morning or late evening.  And make sure you have headlamps if you’re coming or going after sunset!

#25 Experience an Icelandic Hot Dog, together!

Okay my American friends, don’t cringe at this romantic things to do in Iceland idea…  These are not dirty who knows what pig part hot dogs.  Rather they are delicious lamb based ones that come with the most yummy toppings (friend onions, raw onions, ketchup, spicy mustard, and something called Remoladi which in my humble opinion tastes like potato salad).

Because we are not a fast food thriving culture it’s common place to stop at a gas station and get a traditional hot dog, Coca Cola and a Prince Polo Bar.  Dare you to experience the goodness together while on your road trip through Iceland!

To illustrate, we still get landscape color changes, moody misty backdrops, you feel the crispness of the air and sharpness of the wind.  Truly makes you feel alive!  Or that “I just survived my wedding day feeling (lol,), either way it’s a GOOD FEELING!  Plus it’s a perfect storm for adventures and unforgettable wedding photos!  Especially when you know how to prepare for the weather in Iceland.

Larry and Krystal

How many people have you met that have had their pets bring them together?  We haven’t met many couples either!  So when our team sat down with Larry and Krystal for the first time to get to know them better we were swooning over the start of their little love story… Allow us to transport you to a town on the east coast, near to the federal capital of the USA.  Nearby to Krystal ad Larry’s individual homes, was a sweet little dog park.  Each would bring their pups to run, play and socialize with the other dogs.

But this is where it gets good… Krystal had two dogs playing and Larry had one running around.  Those 3 social butterflies became fast friends and formally introduced their owners!  Next, the dogs were inseparable from each other and Larry and Krystal quickly followed suit realizing the endless list of things they had in common and the wild connection they shared!

Connecting on countless things like a passion for travel, CrossFit, hiking, hockey, and of course their pups, these two grew their relationship fast!  Comes naturally when you find a person that compliments you and your lifestyle in every way shape and form!  Speaking from experience of course

Dog Park Proposal Turns Fall Iceland Wedding Adventure

Returning to the dog park many many months later, these two were there witnessing the famed blood moon.  It was there after midnight and in -15 degrees Larry chose to propose!  100% surprised, Krystal gushed in excitement and said yes!  Having already planned a European trip to partake in Oktoberfest, these two knew a destination wedding would be a grand way to kick off the adventure!

Google searches of “Can you get married in Iceland” to “the best Iceland wedding planner” led them to our informative website.  Then realizing we offer a very difference kind of wedding day experience, they were hooked on planning a fall Iceland wedding adventure!  Things that were the most important to them was having an intimate private wedding ceremony with their nearest and dearest immediate family members.  No tourists, no interruptions, just them in the middle of raw rugged Icelandic nature!

Fall Iceland Wedding at Hotel Vik

One of our favorite things are Larry and Krystal is that they are realists.  During our initial 2-3 hour vetting call, they straight up said, “We know the weather is going to suck” but that it would just add to the wild experience and their story!  And oh it did!  That September morning was foggy, rainy and began before sunrise.   Our hair, makeup and adventure wedding photographer were all tending to Krystal and Larry’s needs and details.

Likely if you’re a weekly follower of our Iceland Wedding Planner blog, you know we are huge fans of hotels that can uphold a standard we Americans have grown to love and expect.  Hotel Vik (formally known as Icelandair Vik in 2019) is one of our faves and was the host hotel for Krystal, Larry, and their 10 guests.  Shortly before 8am the group gathered in the lobby ready with “go bags” in hand and exuding so much excitement!  Our super jeep team was outside ready to lock, load, and get the adventurous day started!

September Waterfall Wedding

Traveling to one of our very first private waterfalls in our portfolio, always brings back fond memories to our original mission… To introduce couples to the pure, untouched sides of Iceland which will leave you with a total “I just discovered it” inspired feeling!  Never ever does it get old saying to our groups, “Welcome to your private waterfall” as it comes into view!

Choosing to have have a few traditional elements within a non-traditional environment is a-okay!  Beauty of planning an adventure wedding!  Krystal and Larry wanted to have the traditional walks down the “aisle,” a seated ceremony, and a religious one.  Even though, the skies brought mist, it was such a dreamy heartfelt fall Iceland wedding ceremony!

Hiking in Canyons

When hiking is big part of your relationship, why not have it be a part of your fall wedding in Iceland journey?  Just because you have guests joining you, doesn’t mean you have to curb your level of adventure.  After all, that is the  allure of our style of experience driven weddings, your guests can opt in or out.

For instance, during this fall wedding in Iceland, there were a few guests which did not want to embark on the hike through the canyon in the rain.  So one of our team members stayed with them in the truck telling folklore stories and answering questions about Iceland.  Believe it or not, from the truck those guests who opted out of the hiking wedding location, they were still surrounded by incredible landscape views!

Pretty sure these two newlyweds enjoyed every single second of that rainy hike and have such fun photos to remember it by!

Is it Narnia or Iceland?

September can be hit or miss with rain but the good news is it crafts the most amazing things in the process… Like what you ask?  New waterfalls!  Cannot tell you how many times we’ve scouted an area or been to it and then suddenly on a rainy fall Iceland wedding day it looks TOTALLY different and leaves you full of inspiration!  Adore and thrive on that feeling, truly!  Especially when the areas look like their own little planet or transfer you to the magical world of Narnia!

Natural Cave Exploration

Natural caves in Iceland are almost as abundant as waterfalls.  There is something really special about exploring them during your wedding or elopement in Iceland too.  I would compare it to feeling like you’re part of history!  Likewise they are also a sweet escape from a rainy day too!

Discovering Misty Canyons

Remember how we said that rain creates such a dreamy mysterious backdrop for fall Iceland wedding photos?  Discovering their way through this gorgeous misty canyon was so inspiring!  Not to mention driving through rivers in the super jeep is a whole other experience in itself!!

Roadside Waterfalls and 360 Views

Sometimes weather challenges planned locations within our Iceland wedding schedule.  But don’t fret!  As advertised, our team always has a plan A, B, C, D, etc to ensure there is a equally stunning spot in its place!  So when the wind was too fierce to explore a nearby mountaintop, we “plan b” with a private property waterfall that is roadside and often missed.

Vik Restaurant: The Berg

Erin + Jake

How fabulous is it when a couple meets while working in the same industry together?!  Immediately they already have something in common and a mutual understanding of how things work.  Erin and Jake’s lives aligned thanks to the vast world of Healthcare consulting!  As they started their dating escapades, they instantly bonded over a shared adoration of the outdoors and back country camping.

They found themselves traveling together discovering countless national parks in North America.  I mean how many couples can say they have kayaked alongside of killer whales in Canada?!  Both originally from different states (Jake’s from Missouri and Erin’s from Tennessee) they have made a splendid life together in Florida but still manage to find weekly adventures to embark on together.

These two… I cannot say enough amazing things about them!  Seriously, it all started from the first email we got from them which verbatim began with, “Hello!  I had an emotional reaction when I read your “about me” section!  You described exactly what we envisioned…”  They loved the idea of renting a large house and having a half day adventure with their guests.  Normally our Iceland Wedding Planner team focuses only on full day adventure weddings, but for the right couple we bend.  And bend we did because we had the perfect spots that would make Jake and Erin’s Iceland dream wedding come to life.  So come along with us to relive their Luxury Lodge Wedding!

The Adventure Begins!

Fulfilling Erin and Jake’s request of finding a combination of a homey yet luxury feeling accommodation, that could also serve as a Iceland wedding reception venue, we found that Úlfljótsskáli Luxury Lodge was the best fit for their group.  Seriously folks have you heard of this amazing place?  I would dare to say it is South Iceland’s luxury hidden gem!!  It sits off the beaten path for privacy and exclusivity but still minutes away from some of Iceland’s best natural wonders and restaurants.

Úlfljótsskáli Lodge:

The lodge is owned by a pair or brilliant entrepreneurial sisters who know how to style and understand what luxury means, by American standards.  Having a luxury lodge wedding, means you can house your small wedding group (up to 19 people) under one roof or host an Iceland wedding reception sit-down dinner for up to 40 people comfortably.  For instance, you’ll find 9 rooms; 9 bathrooms; a game room; sauna; wooden bathtubs, gym, fireplace, bar, commercial kitchen, large outdoor hot tub; and last but not least a fire pit!  Oh la la the lap of luxury while on a week vacation in Iceland!!

When Erin and Jake first reached out to our Iceland wedding planning and photography team, they were anticipating only 15 guests (perfect fit for the lodge).  But the outpouring of love and interest though from their friends and family morphed their guest list to a solid 40!  19 were able to stay at the lodge and others were able to stay at nearby hotels and Airbb’s.

Time to Get Ready!

Half day adventure weddings begin around 9am (versus our 5am usual start).  The luxury lodge wedding house was bustling around upon our teams arrival.  For example, the mum’s were in the kitchen cooking brunch for everyone, Erin and her ladies were full on sipping mimosas and Jake was in the game room writing his vows.

Our Iceland adventure wedding photographers Ann and Christy went right to work on capturing Erin’s fabulous Iceland wedding dress and Jake’s dapper groom details!  Totally impressed that their details were totally adventure wedding geared and prepared for rain (hello muck boots!) or shine!  High five Erin + Jake!!  Right before the group embarked on the adventure Erin + Jake shared a sweet little first look outside of the house.

Offbeat Waterfall Wedding Ceremony

Have you heard that it’s good luck if it rains on your wedding day?  They especially say this in Iceland.  Many weddings in Iceland end with that, “I just survived my wedding day” kind of feeling.  Because of the unruly and sometimes challenging weather conditions!  Erin, Jake, and their guests were prepared and had “go bags” in hand just in case!  Arriving to the Iceland ceremony location, it was raining but everyone embraced it as they enjoyed the waterfall views! 

It was important to Erin and Jake to have a ceremony location which we could ensure exclusivity during the ceremony and our team did just that!  This sweet offbeat waterfall area sits in a valley where countless waterfalls stream.  It was an easy 10-15 minute walk for guests to get down into and the guests were greeted with a seated Iceland wedding ceremony.  They held an inspiring wedding ceremony where they said their personal vows to each other as well.  Following the ceremony, they had a big group photo op, family photos, and then Erin and Jake parted from their guests for a hike!

Hiking to a Secret Waterfall

When you plan a wedding with guests it is nice to have a one of the locations during your adventure wedding day that is just experienced by the two of you.  Gives you some really intimate fun memories.  And don’t worry about your guests during this time either, they are having their own mini adventure within your big adventure you are gifting them!  Erin and Jake were crazy excited to slip into their muck boots and hike through rivers with our Iceland wedding photographers, Ann and Christy!

Mountain Waterfall Wedding Photos

Everyone swoons over tall waterfalls found in the mountains.  It’s something about the colors, textures, and the height I think.  The last stop on Erin and Jake’s half day adventurous luxury lodge wedding day was a highland waterfall.  What was super crazy about this stop is when our first Iceland wedding photographer arrived to setup the drone, it was filled with thick fog.  Fast forward 20 minutes later when the group arrived the skies opened and the fog cleared just in time!

 In our opinion champagne goes quite well with waterfalls, so a toast was in order before exploring the falls and the valley views!  What is compelling about this Iceland adventure wedding location is that you get the best of all of the worlds… Gorgeous tall waterfalls, endless mountain views, and if you wanted to a challenging fun hike down into the valley!  For time sake, we didn’t go on the full hike, but Erin and Jake had epic Iceland wedding photos to remember their adventure there!

Luxury Lodge Wedding Reception

Returning to the lodge shortly after 6:30pm, the group arrived to rest and refresh for an hour.  All while the living room, dinning room, and bar area had been transformed into a formal luxury lodge wedding reception space!  Note: If having a larger group you will need to hire in additional tables, dishes, glasses, and flatware. 

One of the great things about the lodge is that although you pay a premium price tag to stay to indulge in the experience, but you’re able to have your group cook yourself or a chef can come in to cook for you as well depending on your budget.  Another one of the major pros to having a luxury lodge wedding reception, is being able to supply your own bar (hello Duty Free upon arrival and Vinbudin!)!

7:30pm came and the guests gathered around the elegant long table for a grilled buffet dinner provided by the Borealis Catering team.  Around 9:30pm the room transitioned to a DJ dance party to finish the night!  I imagine the after party continued outside on the deck, in the hot tub, and around the fire pit hoping for northern lights!

Why get married in Iceland?

These two may have met on Plenty of Fish, but quickly after their first date of drinks which turned into dinner, they realized truly how much in common they had.  It’s fair to say these two not only bring out the BEST in each other, but they challenge each other to have epic unforgettable adventures!  From hiking adventures throughout Death Valley, skiing in across the Rockies in Colorado, scuba diving incredible reefs, countless travel journeys, competing in triathlons/Iron Mans, to spending sweet quite time with their pup Oliver these two know how to LIVE.

After spending  several years together, they ventured down to their favorite beach, brought the dog and delicious drinks to make a picnic out of it.  They laughed, talked, and listened to a fabulous country music playlist together.  Ricky proposed to Brooke when their song, “I Don’t Dance” by Lee Brice came on!  Brooke was shocked and oh-so happy!

Shortly after the surprise proposal, they began planning a traditional local wedding in New York City.  But as they got into the thick of wedding planning, having 200+ people for only 4-5 hours, just didn’t really feel like “them” or fun at all.  They began to search for interesting places to have a destination wedding and a place free from the zika virus.  After Googling around a bit, they found their way to Iceland’s dynamic landscape and opportunity of dramatic wedding photographs.  They found their way to our Iceland Wedding Planner team and our adventure wedding concept and were hooked!

Brooke and Ricky adored the idea of taking all they love to a waterfall in Iceland for a wedding ceremony and then showing their guests how stunning Iceland is by having a full day adventure wedding after.  So we dare you to come along with us today and experience Brooke and Ricky’s Iceland destination wedding at Hotel Glymur!

Iceland Wedding Hotel: Hotel Glymur

Choosing an Iceland wedding hotel during summer can be a challenge.  The ones that uphold an American style standard book out 12-24 months before if you plan to come during July and August.  Many also do not allow for private dining space unless renting out the entire hotel as well.  The good news for Brooke and Ricky was that their guest list of 70-80 guests would easily overtake Hotel Glymur.

Brooke and Ricky had rented out the Villa Romance at Hotel Glymur.  It offers an incredible view of the whale fjord (Hvalfjordur) and it’s own private hot tub!  When you embark on a full day adventure wedding with us, it is likely you will begin your morning around 5am with our Iceland wedding hair and makeup team coming to your hotel room or villa.   Our Iceland wedding photographer also arrives this early as well to ensure there is plenty of time to capture all of the amazing wedding details (like the welcome bag, wedding dress, suit, etc!)

Iceland Countryside Church Wedding: Hallgrímskirkja Saurbæ

Our team does not often take on couples who wish to be married in a church.  That is unless they are CRAZY AWESOME like Brooke and Ricky and will embark on an adventure day afterwards.  With having so many guests varying of abilities, they wanted to ensure their ceremony was super accessible and that their guests would be dry.  So to avoid any issues with challenging weather conditions (extreme wind or rain) Brooke and Ricky opted to hold their Iceland wedding ceremony at the church down the hill from Hotel Glymur.  It is called Hallgrímskirkja Saurbæ.

Hvalfjörður (Whale Fjord) Wedding Photos

The ceremony concluded and the Iceland Wedding at Hotel Glymur photographer, decided it would be best to get out of the church and into the glorious sunshine that was happening that gorgeous August morning!  Hvalfjörður makes a gorgeous backdrop for Iceland wedding photos.

Wedding at Hotel Glymur Bus Adventure:

Having a wedding at Hotel Glymur, allows you to have access to many amazing natural wonders.  The Snaefellsness Peninsula is a short and gorgeous drive away.  The area has most recently become pretty overrun with tourists each day, but it is possible to find a spot or two away from them.

Our Iceland Wedding Planner team does not typically do wedding adventures in tourist locations either, but we make exceptions if a couple has a strong desire to bring their group to explore it.  Arnarstapi is found in the lovely Snaefellsness Peninsula.  It’s a natural reserve area that boasts history and endless beauty.  This was also the location where our team crafted a traditional hot dog bbq lunch for their group to delight in!

Malarrifsviti Lighthouse Wedding Photos:

There are many lighthouses throughout the Snaefellsness Peninsula to explore.  One of our personal favorites and a bit less touristy is Malarrifsviti.  The area is very dramatic, with the black sand, rocks, and sea cliffs, making it an ideal backdrop for Iceland wedding photos.  Nearby to this beautiful place, is the famed Londrangar Basalt Cliffs (amazing for bird watching in August)!

Golden Beach Iceland Wedding Adventure Location:

There are more black sand beaches than golden in Iceland.  But the Snaefellsness Peninsula is an area that has many golden sands to delight in.  Skarðsvík Beach is one of our favorites to explore when having an Iceland wedding at Hotel Glymur.  It has high sea cliffs, docile waves, sparkly sand, and sometimes a view of the Snaefellsjökull Glacier on a clear day!  Brooke, Ricky, and their 70+ Iceland wedding guests thorough enjoyed their time here exploring the beach!

Kirkjufellsfoss Mountain and Waterfall Wedding Adventure in Iceland:

Kirkjufellsfoss is a location that is super magical.  Touristy or not, it is a site you must see.  Having said that, Brooke and Ricky delighted in both the waterfall and the stunning mountain during their adventure wedding in Iceland!

Wedding at Hotel Glymur Reception:

Above all, there were some traditional aspects of their wedding at Hotel Glymur, Brooke and Ricky held firm to.  Which was mainly, having a formal American style wedding reception in Iceland.  Furthermore, they wanted the pretty reception decor, 4 delicious courses (foodie experience), traditional Iceland wedding cake, having formal dances for themselves and honor parents, followed by a big DJ dance party!  Their wish was our command!!

Brandi and Zach’s Love Story before their Iceland Wedding:

Three and a half months into their dating escapades, Brandi and Zach traveled to Iceland together as their first “weekend away” trip together.  Pretty freaking awesome location to start travelling together, eh?  They not only fell in love with the dynamic landscape, but in love with each other!  By the end of their adventure they were both convinced they had Viking blood running through their veins and this land was once “home” to them either in another life or via their ancestors.  Either way, they were enamored and slightly obsessed with the countryside.

They are a couple who are always moving, learning, creating, and exploring.  Brandi and Zach seek out unique food experiences, museums, local culture, and find their way to UNESCO World Heritage sites.  They share these passions which in turn makes a very firm foundation for their friendship and a lifetime of love.

Speaking of lifetime love, let’s talk about the super sweet proposal that came after a few years of adventuring together… Brandi and Zach were on a road trip to Long Island.  One of Zach’s personal passions is to write and read, so they paid a visit to a 180 year old library.  This was also the amazing location of where Edgar Allen Poe proposed to his beloved.  Zach had presented Brandi with an incredible book he had written about their love story (hello 155 pages of adoration) and proposed at the end of it!  Serious high five, Zach!!

When it came to destination wedding planning, Iceland was the only location they found serious excitement over.  Sharing with their friends and family the country they fell in love was a perfect way to celebrate their marriage.  Not big fans of tradition, they wanted to plan a wedding in Iceland that was private, exclusive, and just them and their guests with a sense of adventure sprinkled in.  Finding our Iceland Wedding Planner team and learning about us, encompassed exactly the sort of privacy and adventure they wished for!

After reviewing our amazing wedding day options and paired hotels, Frost and Fire Guesthouse in Hveragerði turned out to be their perfect place for their Iceland wedding host hotel.  Have you seen Frost and Fire?  It’s a unique yet luxurious experience to have in Southern Iceland.  They have hands down one of the best outdoor pool, hot tubs with views, contrast therapy (cold water to hot to help with circulation), the most amazing countryside restaurant, Varma, and the only location you can boil your breakfast egg yourself in a hot pot inside the earth!

Being summer in Iceland, the sun rose before the adventure wedding start time of 5am.  Our Iceland wedding photography team began photographing the getting ready process of hair and makeup along with the gorgeous wedding details Brandi and Zach had.  They decided the only traditional element they wished to keep from an American style wedding was not seeing each other before the ceremony.  So when the super jeeps arrived, Brandi rode in one and Zach in the other and she would put on her dress upon arrival to their private waterfall.

Organic Adventure Wedding Ceremony:

On the move to their stunning Iceland wedding location, each super jeep was brimming in excitement!  The guests knew they were heading to a waterfall but had no idea what type.  Pretty sure everyone’s jaw dropped as we crossed several rivers and arrived to Brandi and Zach’s Iceland private waterfall wedding ceremony location!  They held an organic adventure wedding ceremony where their 30+ guests watched in amazement.  Immediately following they cheers’d the bride and groom and delighted in a traditional hot dog BBQ picnic.

Iceland Waterfall Wedding Photos:

Having an Iceland wedding photography team that also has the ability to do drone photos is the perfect mix during your adventure.  It really offers a unique viewpoint!  At this private waterfall in Iceland there are many vantage points though for romantic wedding photos.  Brandi and Zach enjoyed exploring the beautiful organic adventure wedding waterfall from head to toe and all around the area alongside of their wedding guests!

Vik Iceland Wedding Exploration:

The mysterious cliffs over Vik Iceland has an interesting story attached to them.  It involves the US military and our Iceland Wedding Planner and super jeep team would love to share the story with you!  The view in all directions really added to the organic adventure wedding theme.

Wedding Photos at a Private Canyon and Waterfall:

Nothing beats having a location all to yourself… Our Iceland Wedding Planner team specializes in securing those types of unique locations so you feel like the only ones in the world there exploring!  The last two locations on Brandi and Zach’s organic adventure wedding exploration list were a private narrow super green canyon followed by another private waterfall!  These two LOVED exploring both and the amazing super jeep ride that got them there!  They truly gifted their guests with such a unique experience during their adventure wedding in Iceland!!

Frost and Fire Iceland Wedding Reception:

The Iceland wedding guests had about 30-45 minutes to rest and refresh before meeting again inside of the perfectly styled organic adventure wedding reception restaurant Varma!  The seating was in a “U” shape which allowed everyone to set their eyes on the geothermal mountains and raging river Frost og Funi Guesthouse sits upon.  The Iceland wedding reception decor theme was simplistic with moss and romantic candles.  A traditional Iceland wedding cake (kransakaka) sat in the corner just waiting for the group to partake after their 4 courses.

Today, I am bringing you a brilliant bonus feature!  Like hands down the most ideal private cabin I have ever stayed in!  …and guess where that cabin is located?  ICELAND!  If you’re in the market to book the most romantic location for your honeymoon or an Iceland elopement location, I would urge you to consider Kristinn Arnason’s homes in Hafnarskogur (cabin/house) and Akureyri (apartment).

Barely a 1 hour drive from the bustling city of Reykjavik sits a quite secluded cabin I had the pleasure of staying in for 3 nights.  It felt like “home” as soon as I pulled in and looked down the hill at the house.  Falling in line with the traditional Icelandic wooden house design, you’ll find the house exterior is black (in the old days tar was used), a vibrant red door, and landscape accented by sod elements.  Beautiful, just beautiful and 100% connected to nature being only a few steps away.  Then it snowed and somehow made the outside of the house even MORE stunning as you’ll find from my photos below!

Your car stays up at the top of the hill and you have a fun little walk of excitement down a slight hill to the house.  The area feels private and very secure.  As you look around you’ll notice you have a 360 view of the colorful fjord, town of Borganes across the fjord, and a tall mountain across the street.  Pretty perfect if you ask me!  Ah, but perfection continues and increases as you enter into the house!  The décor has been professionally designed by the owner’s fabulous wife Rut Karadottir. It shows, as none of us could eloquently design such a dazzling design that belongs in an issue of Town & Country Magazine.  It boasts warmth, every room is inviting and beckons you to sit and stay a while, and conveys endless amounts of country sophistication.  You’ll leave wanting this same setup in your own home, or at least I did!  But, you be your own judge as you book a few nights here!

So why am I boasting this location as a sweet little spot to elope in Iceland too?  The deck outside offers a perfect spot to exchange vows with the fjords behind and you are then minutes from some of Iceland’s adventure spots such as the following:

• Glymur Waterfall (30 minutes)
• Iceland’s Western Highlands (30 minutes)
• Borganes (5 minutes away – Grocery Store, one of my favorite bakeries, and fuel stations)
• Langjokull Glacier (30 minutes) –Inside the Glacier Experience (open year round as of 2015).
• Whale Fjords (30 minutes)
• Hot Springs (Fontana / Fludir: 30-90 minutes)
• Downtown Reykjavik (1 hour)
• Snaefellsness Penninsula (1 hour)
• Iceland’s famed Golden Circle (90 minutes)

Faroe Islands

Are you racking your brain right now trying to figure out where are the Faroe Islands?  They are owned by Denmark (just as Greenland is) and are a hypnotizing set of islands in-between Iceland, Norway, and the U.K.  Inside these magical 18 islands you will lose yourself and find yourself over and over again.  …and the almost unbelievable part is when you leave the islands, you’ll be overcome with an unyielding amount of inspiration, focus, and view of nature that you didn’t know was possible.  You’ll almost believe Faroe Islands = Narnia!

You giggle, but I’m serious!  What other place has more grass covered houses than anywhere in the world, more sheep than people, horses playing in magical looking areas (see below), jagged cliff edges that will get your heart pumping, hikes that are self-finding, a serenity that you thought only exists in your mind, and a place that still offers a deep and rich culture that mixes the best of the best Nordic worlds of Denmark and Iceland?!  Nowhere, Natta, No place but the magnificent Faroe Islands, I tell you!  …and you all know I’ve traveled the world seeking the world’s best Adventure Wedding spots!

Within the mainland island just a 5 minute drive from the sparkling seaside city of Torshavn, sits on a hillside overlooking the city, the perfect Faroe Islands wedding location: Hotel Føroyar.  Back in September I was lucky enough to call this amazing hotel my home base for several nights as I location scouted both on land and on sea for epic Faroe Island wedding locations!  From the moment I arrived, I smiled.  It was very late and pitch dark but I was able to see the lights shinning from the city below and when I opened my hotel room window I found that the hotel was built right into the hill it was perched upon!  The next morning, I may or may not have climbed out my window and did somersaults down it

So, are you wondering why I personally loved Hotel Føroyar?  The connection I felt to nature was outrageously awesome.  Walking towards the entrance to the hotel, you see the entire roof of the hotel is grass covered and then you follow your way to the reception desk and the colors, tones, and textures all feel earthy but with an underling accent of luxury.  I was given my keys and told to walk down the hallway where there are rocks from the land incorporated right into the walls you pass to your room.  It was brilliant, really freaking brilliant!

…and then you ask me the real question: Why would I choose Hotel Føroyar to hold my Faroe Island destination wedding?  I would playfully ask the question back to you as, “Why the heck wouldn’t you? It’s the best the Faroe Islands has to offer, hands down.” #TrueStory

Another reason why you should consider Hotel Føroyar is because they have lavish conference rooms that can perfectly accommodate your Faroe Island wedding reception from a whimsical Faroese elopement to a 300+ guest list.  There are 3 standout locations within Hotel Føroyar that I was totally struck by… First, the VIP top floor houses a hall that can capably host your 340 guest Faroe Islands wedding reception.  Second, there is a wine cellar that would be perfect for your intimate elopement for two or exclusive party of 10 that has a deep romantic vibe embedded in it.  Third, there is the CUTEST little grass covered trailer that can fit your fabulous party of 2-8 people in it and it can be towed to some of the really amazing spots we have scouted throughout the island!  Talk about service and options, right?  So I’m here right now, picturing you, your soon-to-be, and your closest friends/family indulging in exquisite cuisine… Seaside, Cliff-side, in View of an Amazing Natural Wonder, or set within one of their super cute magical towns.  Are you in?!

The final reason why Hotel Føroyar is rounding out my Top 5 Adventure Wedding Hotel List for 2015 is the caliber of the food and the euphoria it left me in.  Never have I ever had such an intense, beautiful, and creative tasting experience than at Hotel Føroyar’s world renowned (and awarded) restaurant: KOKS.  For 3 hours and 21 courses, I put things in my mouth I never thought I would and each dish made me even more excited in taste and presentation.  For my lovely high-end foodies out there that are all about the adventurous experience during the day and the evening being about food and conversation… THIS IS THE ULTIMATE DESTINATION WEDDING EXPERIENCE.  The dishes were delicate, intriguing, and came with amazing drink pairings that amplified the experience (as if that was possible).  Each course was introduced by a restaurant staff member who was well-versed on the local/cultural ingredients and also a skilled sommelier. The menu I had follows below (don’t drool too much!):

Nordic Hotel Forum in Tallin, Estonia.

I’m so excited today, to introduce you to not only a gorgeous country in the Baltic States that is filled with heart-warming history, art, stunning villas, parks, delicious food, and endless activities for my thrill seekers, but a hotel that is near it all.  The Nordic Hotel Forum offers you luxury within walking distance of the Old Town Tallin and is minutes away from everything else!

I arrived at the hotel totally tired from driving in several hours from Latvia and as soon as I walked in my mood changed as the staff greeted me.  The super professional team took my bags from my hands, checked me in quickly and wished me a wonderful day.  I suddenly found my second wind!  Luckily too because I was minutes away from eating out of my mini bar or ordering room service when I was reminded about their FABULOUS 5 star restaurant on site: Restaurant Monaco!

The meal I had in this fabulous hotel and restaurant, was one of the most delicious, surprising, and inspiring I have ever had.  Not kidding folks… and I eat out a lot!  The chef is genius and the space is gorgeous!  Which proves to be the best combination for having a destination wedding in Estonia, am I right?  You want your guests to walk away from their meal saying, “Oh my, that was the BEST meal I have ever had!”

I began with the astonishing “signature drink” of the hotel and it was calm, cool, and refreshing!  I delighted in a delicious 4 course meal that evening that brought in some traditional elements like duck/deer but brought it up 100 notches by taste and presentation (as you’ll see from my photos below)! …and I might have had the most amazing thing I have ever put in my mouth for dessert.  Nothing like I have ever had before, it blew my mind as it exploded (literally and figuratively) in my mouth!
