Trekking to Rauðufossar (Red Waterfall)

If you’re a lover of uniquely textured waterfalls, you are going to jump for joy today.  Why?  Because we are going to tell you how to get to and directions to hike to a fabulous one in the Icelandic Highlands!  Therefore, without further ado, we are pleased to introduce you to Rauðufossar…

Rauðufossar & Landmannalaugar

The direct translation of  Rauðufossar means “red waterfall.”  And it’s clear to see why this waterfall in Iceland coins this name with the colors it exudes.  To illustrate, the area surrounding the waterfall is a nature preserve, sites of previous eruptions, hot springs, etc.  Also it happens to be on the way to a famed place named, Landmannalaugar.  Which is extremely rich in geothermal minerals, textures, and colors.  In fact, some might even say one of the most colorful places in the Icelandic highlands!

Driving Directions

Likely now you’re very curious on how you get to this vivid waterfall, named Rauðufossar.  Firstly, plan a trip to come to Iceland during the core summer months (June to August).  Otherwise please hire a local guide with a super jeep or helicopter outside of this time frame to err on the side of caution.  Secondly, ideally you need to rent a 4×4 with higher clearance that is specifically allowed to go on “f-roads.”  Thirdly, check road conditions before you head out.

Fourth, from downtown Reykjavik, you can expect to commit 2.5 hours one way to this drive.  See this Google Map Link for more information.  Next, you would take Route 1 East until shortly before the town of Hella.  It’s there you’ll turn left onto Road #26 until you see signs for Landmannaleið / Landmannalaugar.  Then you’ll turn right there and head onto the F225 highland Road.

Additionally, you’ll continue to drive for approximately 15 miles (~24km) until you see the turn off for an aggressive super jeep road called, Krakatindur).  But only drive for about a 1/4 to 1/2 mile and you’ll see a small parking lot on the left hand side and the start of a trailhead.  Be aware: As of the end of 2021, the trailhead was unmarked except for a “stay on the path” type sign near to the entrance.  Park, gear up, and get going but please leave no trace as you hike!

Hiking to Rauðufoss

Oh la la it’s time to hike to Rauðufossar (Raudufoss / the Red Waterfall)!  Furthermore, plan to hike for 45-60 minutes one way.  Bring water as the area can be quite dry until you reach the spring fed waterfall.  Meanwhile, follow the photo directions below to guide you there!

Also keep in mind if you’re open to an even longer hike (like 1.5 miles further along the waterfall river) you can continue hiking along Rauðufossakvísl.  To illustrate, you’ll encounter a wild landscape that is not often seen in Iceland called, Rauðauga (the “red eye”).  Further, the day we hiked in a wind storm was progressively getting worse so we called it quits after the waterfall.  So we encourage you to continue our adventure on a fabulous summer day!

Getting Married at the Iceland Red Waterfall

So now you may be curious to know if you can get married at Rauðufossar?  The short answer is yes!  However, it is within a nature preserve… Therefore, it is best to involve a local Iceland wedding planner to help you get in advance permission.  But, if you’re thrilled by the idea of having a wedding in the Icelandic highlands and want to see, do, and know more feel free to contact us to get that adventure started!
