From across the “pond” as some say, Dave (from the U.K.) found his way to meeting Alison (from the USA) through their many terrific friends.  Weeks later they were head over heels for each other and months later, Dave proposed a lifetime of adventures to Alison!  She said Yes  Iceland was the half way point for all of their friends and family to meet and celebrate!  …so then the days of awesome Iceland wedding planning began!  They craved intimacy, adventure, and wanted to take their 20+ guests on an unforgettable EXPERIENCE for their wedding day in Iceland.  So all that said, follow us today as we share with you Alison and Dave’s adventure wedding in Iceland!  ::Update:: My Hotel Wedding did a lovely feature of Allison and Dave’s wedding, HERE.

Ohhhh yes, May 4th!  Being Star Wars fans, it was only fitting they go explore some of the epic areas the movies have been filmed within Iceland!  …May the Fourth Be With You!

But first we must set the scene… Hotel Ranga, served as the groups hotel “base camp” for 2 days.  It’s a fabulous boutique hotel found in Southern Iceland that screams luxury but still designates hints of earthy rustic charm.  It also is near Hekla, one of Iceland’s most powerful volcanoes.

When you have a wedding in Iceland that has guests attending, it’s important to provide your guests with a “welcome bag.”  It adds to the excitement and also aids your guests in things they may need during the adventure.  Alison and Dave did it up right!  With lots of goodies like a timeline card, eye mask (nice to have during the months of May-August when we have TONS of daylight), bandaids, Shout Wipes, Pepto (which isn’t sold here in Iceland) Hot Hands, Hangover Kit, Pancho, etc!

With our adventure weddings in Iceland, we action pack them with little room for delay. So it’s nice to create a timeline card to give to your guests upon check in (or at a Welcome dinner the evening before) so they know when and where they have to be.  Sets everyone up for success, you know?  Our favorite timeline creator: Pixels to Paper Studio did an awesome job on Alison and Dave’s!

Alison’s Iceland wedding dress was divine!  So much gorgeous detail and sooo flowy!

Alison had some awesome blue rain-boots she wore for the majority of the day but she also had some stunning Badgley Mischka’s and Tom’s waiting for her Iceland wedding reception!  Every adventure wedding bride needs 3 pairs of shoes!

Now let’s talk about her GROOM, Dave for a sec, shall we and his dapper Iceland wedding details!

His handmade suit even came with a custom tag that featured their initials and wedding date.  From the suit to the shoes, Dave was handsome!

As I mentioned, being Star Wars fans, Alison surprised Dave with themed cuff-links.

We adored Dave’s super awesome bow tie too!

Our Iceland hair and makeup team made Alison even more beautiful then she already was!  …and proofed her against rain and wind.

Before leaving Hotel Ranga, these two loved the idea of doing a “first look” so we opted to do it behind the hotel, riverside.

The structure for this Iceland adventure wedding was a tiny bit different than we typically do, but we were happy to craft a unique option for this awesome group!  All of the guests loaded onto a bus for a 1/2 day adventure.  Read further on to see the rest of the wedding adventure flow.

Alison and Dave for months, kept the adventure wedding day secret.  So when the guests arrived and saw the setup below, they were hollering in enthusiasm!

Having a Asatru (some refer to as a traditional Norse / Pagan / Viking) ceremony was important to Dave and Alison.  It’s a super fun ceremony that has old roots in our culture here in Iceland.  Not to mention who doesn’t want to hold an oath ring and drink from a horn?!

As many of you know, we do not go to the tourist locations like Reynisfjara, but for the right couple we make exceptions and these two loved the idea of a champagne toast here during their Iceland wedding day adventure!

Exploring with each other during your wedding day in Iceland, creates some magical moments!

After the 1/2 day adventure via bus was complete, we transitioned with 1/2 of their group to super jeeps for a more private adventure.

Alison, Dave, and their closest family members got to explore the private side of one of Iceland’s 13 glaciers!

The fog and the rain made for some dramatic Iceland wedding photo moments!

Their nieces and nephews all got to touch a glacier for the very first time!  Talk about unforgettable moments on your adventure wedding day!

Oh la la romantic Iceland wedding moments in front of glacier ice caves… Love!

Uniquely shaped mountains like these always make me melt!  Then add in a gorgeous Iceland wedding couple and it takes it to another level!

One of my favorite parts of their wedding day was the 3rd part… We said goodbye to two super jeeps and Alison and David continued on to a super secret canyon area with a private waterfall for some intimate adventures!

The contrast of the dark and light together is AMAZING to me in this Iceland wedding photo!  Major high-fives to Alison and Dave who went into total “mountain goat” mode to get to this spot!

Once everyone got back to Hotel Ranga after the days adventure, they had some time to rest and refresh before they were invited to a BEAUTIFUL Iceland wedding reception in River Hall.

Fun Fact: The bride’s grandmother had past away and in remembrance of her, we had lavender at each place setting.  It filled the room with a 5 sensory experience!

As a sweet little party favor to all of their guests, Dave and Alison gifted them with “Let the Adventure Begin” bottle openers!  How fun!

Following the overall theme of “Adventure” and “May 4th” they had 2 beautiful handmade cakes by the groom’s talented sister!

Can I just say, I LOVE Hotel Ranga’s food?!  Seriously folks, I often drive 1.5 hours from Reykjavik just to have their delicious Mushroom Soup and Reindeer Carpaccio (pictured below), no joke! Alison and Dave’s Iceland wedding menu was fit for the best foodies!

A lovely smoked salmon dish with rye bread served as their 2nd course!

Did you know with the rental of River Hall at Hotel Ranga, you have access to their beautiful balcony and impeccable view?!  Comes in handy for Iceland wedding photos!

When Alison and I were brainstorming about something fun to decor their Iceland wedding reception dancing space (Hekla Hall) we came up with some awesome ideas but in the end LOVE balloons and candles would win!  I think we made the right choice!!

First dance magic!

So many folks forget about a “send off” for the couple at the end of the night.  We crafted something super fun for this group… complete with sparklers and an “Adventure” marque sign!

As someone once said, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain.”   No joke folks, it rains in Iceland more often than not so if you are planning to have a wedding in Iceland you must embrace this simple fact and be excited to run around in it.  Come along with us today as Gina and Terry show you exactly how to do that!

A sunrise start in mid September began this Iceland adventure wedding day!

After crossing a few rivers via super jeep and then on foot, Gina, Terry, and their intimate wedding party made their way to their ice cave wedding ceremony spot!

The funny thing about rain on your Iceland wedding day, is that most of my couples don’t seem to notice (or care) because they are so high on adrenaline and love!

They may have been soaked and shivering at times, but they got married in front of their gorgeous ice cave in Iceland!  ….Note: Our teams always have your safety in mind so unless an ice cave is fully stable we cannot take you inside.

Gina and Terry held a traditional Asatru Ceremony in front of that ice cave in Iceland. It’s the closest thing to a Viking style wedding ceremony where you hold oath rings to say your vows and take your first drink as newlyweds out of a horn!

This ice cave was formed by snow that fell hundreds of years ago that has been traveling slowly down the glacier.  Pretty neat, huh?

Rain or Shine, this place is pretty flipping EPIC to explore!

One of my favorite moments of the day… It had rained so hard during the ceremony that the water levels were out of control making our bridge we brought useless.  Don’t worry, we always a “plan b” and  “plan c” in our pocket!  The bride and guests took “plan b” which was a piggyback ride through the river and the groom took “plan c” forging it on his own!

Sometimes we find it fun to breakup the Iceland wedding ceremony pieces.  So we continued the awesome “drink from the horn” Asatru tradition at another location.

Lunchtime brought a stop at a mountain hut to dry off and warm up during their fall Iceland wedding day!

What I enjoyed the most about Gina and Terry during their Iceland wedding day was that they genuinely loved and laughed their way through the rain savoring every silly awesome second of it! #couplesgoals

Our secret caves often provide fantastic shelter from the rain during Iceland wedding days!

Woohoo!!  A rain free moment and a rainbow!

But in Iceland they say… If you don’t like the weather, wait a few seconds, it’ll change! And change it did!

Rain is often challenging when it comes at you sideways, these two took it like seasoned champs and made it look GOOD!

Weddings and Waterfalls just go together on Iceland wedding days!

…and then sometimes you have to find your way to Mars to find some sunshine

After an action packed adventure wedding day, Gina, Terry, and their fabulous guests found their way to a delicious dinner!

Our destination wedding in Iceland topic of the week is all about your reception music options.  Iceland has disc jockeys (dj’s) to be the MC of your event, many Iceland hotels also offer a speaker system throughout their banquet rooms that you can plug an IPOD into, there are a few Icelandic bands also available for booking.  But, my challenge to you is… Think about the wedding receptions you have been to throughout the years, did you love or hate the music?  Annoyed by the DJ?  Were you greeted with bellowing Frank Sintra songs? Songs about love and marriage? Disney themed songs?  An earthy harpist? Orchestra music?  A poppy band?  Celebrity impersonators?

A couple questions you need to ask yourselves as you consider what kind of music you would like to have played during your Iceland wedding reception:

1. What kind of music do you and your fiancé love?  Genres, vibe, tone, lyrics, etc.
2. What kind of music is enjoyable to your VIP’s (parents, bridal party, family, etc) and guests?
3. Do you want to have formal dances?  If so, you may want break the music into sections to build the energy of the event.  Example: Cocktail Hour, During Dinner, Formal Dances, and Fun/Dance Songs.
4. Are there songs on your “do not play” list?  This piece is important if hiring an Icelandic DJ for your wedding day.
5. Is there a speaker system at your Iceland wedding host hotel?  Can you plug an IPOD into the sound system?  <This is a wonderful Iceland wedding cost savings if you can. Which means you can allocate more to your Iceland wedding photography fund, woohoo!>
6. Who will you designate to run (or check in on) the wedding IPOD playlist during the event?  They will also need to be the person who ends up with the IPOD at the end of the night (if you and your hubby leave the reception early).

When planning for our destination wedding in Iceland reception music at Hotel Ranga we took a bit of an old school approach.  We wanted a formal event that still had fun laid back elements to it.  We’re not big “dancing fools” so we wanted to have some older genre easy-listening songs that would make people smile, reminisce, and laugh to.  The music would be more background music to us than anything else because our reception was focused on the 5 courses, conversation, the location, and our newly wedded bliss =)  Without further delay, here is our inclusive list of our Hotel Ranga wedding reception playlist we played from our IPOD:

Communication with your Guests

Will you begin the communication with your guests by sending our Save the Dates?  Maybe if your date is closer and your group smaller, you jump right into Iceland wedding invitations.  Either way or route, it is helpful to additionally a wedding website to continue to share updates and travel information.

When you send your invitations, will you let the guest know what is specifically planned or will you keep it a surprise in case a location needs to change?  Previous couples have done the following to share Iceland wedding guest advice:

1. Do you want to keep the ceremony location a surprise?  For example, it can be pretty fun to keep folks guessing.  Especially if you’re planning an adventure wedding with us… Why?  Because the chances of the guest visiting the location before are super low as our 90% of our locations require a super jeep as transportation.
2. However, if you haven’t hired our team, you may want to disclose the location in advance so guests do not visit it!
3. Maybe the location will need to change because of severe weather.  It is good to remain flexible and just give your guests the name or area of the wedding host hotel.
4. Also, having a surprise wedding ceremony location could start your wedding off uniquely.

Essential Information

Meanwhile, what is considered essential information to communicate as Iceland wedding guest advice?  Firstly, when you send our your Save the Dates or Iceland wedding invitations it would be good to have an insert sharing your wedding website info.  Secondly, or some verbiage addressing what they may be getting into.  Third, maybe something like this:

• Wedding Date
• Iceland Wedding Hotel Name
• Countryside Town Name
• RSVP Date

“The ceremony will be held outside, rain or shine.  The weather should be moderate to cold, around 40-45F.  Please layer and be prepared to be outside for up to 1.5 hours at one time for Iceland wedding photos and exploration.  Please keep in mind that you’ll be outdoors on grass, gravel, mud, and sand, so hiking boots or flats are recommended.  The wedding dinner / reception will be held indoors so feel free to bring a change of clothes!”

Specifics on What to Bring:

If writing on your Iceland wedding website, it would be nice to start with what season you’re getting married in.  To illustrate, describe it!  For example, Spring months in Iceland are generally chilly, with average temperatures around 45F / 7C in the day.  However, sometimes the weather can be unpredictable, so pack different types of layered clothing. Also, note that in April Iceland has ~16 hours of daylight and long periods of twilight with the Northern Lights sometimes in display (earlier part of the month).  Sunrise is typically around 5am and sunset after 9pm.

Traveling to Iceland Packing Suggestions:

Just to get you thinking… We provide a short list of common packing items folks bring to visit Iceland.  Likely, it would prove to be useful as Iceland wedding guest advice too!

• Passport that is valid for at least three months beyond the period of intended stay in Iceland. No visa for US/Canadian citizens is required for a stay of up to three months in any six-month period. For other countries please visit this Icelandic Government website.
• Bring your Iceland wedding invitation– Some airlines/visa offices may require you to show proof/reason for travel.  Specifically if an in advance Visa needed to be secured.
• Camera.
• Adapter for Europe – Voltage is 220-240 Volts (U.S./Canada are 110-120 Volts).  Checkout favorite Travel Adapter.
• Bathing suit for Hot Springs or Hot Tubs!
• Walking shoes and/or hiking boots for exploring.  Our favorite are Salewas.
• Shoes for wedding day and night.
• Comfortable clothes for walking, hiking, and sitting in the super jeep, bus, or car. Layers would be best.
• Cocktail attire for the wedding welcome dinner and Iceland Wedding Reception.
• Warm coat(s) (for glacier walk, wedding day, and sight-seeing)
• Windbreaker or Under Armour cold gear.
• Warm pants to layer; thermal underwear or Smartwool!
• Gloves, check out Sealskinz!
• Scarf.
• Hat.
• Sunglasses.
• Stain Removers, we love travel Shout Wipes!

I don’t know where you are… but I am writing from Plymouth Michigan today and it is a balmy 55 degrees on January 12th!  Wowza- where did winter go?  Well let’s get wedding planning!

Today’s topic is Wedding Day Timelines:

Depending on the location you have chosen and the type of bride and groom are… your schedule will vary obviously!  However, having over 10 years of wedding day experience Photos by Miss Ann would like to offer up a better visual to help you in your Iceland destination wedding photography schedule and beyond.

First Step: Decide whether or not you want to see each other before the ceremony.  First Look versus Traditional Schedule.  There are truly pro’s and con’s to each one.

Second Step: Hire a Iceland Wedding Photographer that does not limit you to silly “continuous time” rules.  Some of the time will be traveling around to the the epic Iceland Wedding Portrait Spots so they will not be photographing anyhow so don’t hire anyone that limits you (we made that mistake).  Photos by Miss Ann does not limit you as far as timing on your wedding day we are there for you!

Photos by Miss Ann is personally a fan of not seeing each other before and having your wedding day be an adventure!  Our wedding day in Iceland is a perfect example of a traditional but adventurous wedding schedule.

Our Wedding Day in Iceland Schedule Follows:

Friday:

7-11pm – Welcome dinner for all guests!

Guests were given Iceland wedding welcome bags and wedding timeline cards after their 3 course welcome dinner meal.

Saturday (Wedding Day):

9-10am: Buffet Breakfast.

10-12pm: Hair and makeup for the Iceland bride and maid of honor in the Royal Suite.

12:00pm: Bus Departs from hotel for Iceland wedding ceremony with groom and all guests.

12:15pm: Bride and maid of honor depart hotel in Icelandic Super Jeep for ceremony entrance.

12:30pm: Arrival to wedding ceremony site: Seljalandsfoss wedding.

12:30-1pm: Iceland Wedding Planner sets up Iceland ceremony chairs, chair ties, lays down rose petal aisle way, and Icelandic DJ plays pre ceremony music from our playlist.

1-1:30pm: Iceland Wedding Ceremony at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall.  We said our own wedding vows, held a love letter ceremony, and greeted our guests after.

1:30-2pm: Seljalandsfoss Waterfall Wedding Photos.

2-2:40pm: Our 40+ guests hopped on to a chartered bus for a surprise day trip to Vik black sand beach for a champagne toast!

2:40-4pm: Vik Beach Wedding Photos: Group champagne toast, bridal party destination wedding portraits, friends, just the two of us for romantic Iceland wedding portraits.

4-4:50pm: Pit Stop at the Iceland’s best wool shop.  It’ll be hard to get your guests out of here!  Be diligent.

4:50-5:30pm: Travel to Skógafoss Waterfall for Iceland wedding portraits.

5:30-5:50pm: Skógafoss Waterfall for double rainbow wedding photos!

5:50-6:30pm: Travel back to hotel for wedding reception along the Ranga River.

6:30-7pm:  Bus arrives back at the hotel – Guests freshen up after their Iceland Wedding Adventure! …I will say our guests were exhausted at this point- but easily found their second wind!

7-11pm:  5 course wedding reception dinner.

Our 5 course  Iceland wedding menu consisted of the following amazing items:

Course 1: Mushroom Soup

Course 2: Lobster Skewers

Course 3: Smoked Icelandic Puffin

Course 4: Lamb or Icelandic Salmon

Course 5: Chocolate Lava Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream (Our Iceland Wedding Cake!)

11pm We closed our reception with sharing our first dance, Chris with mother, and myself with my mother.

::Note::

Before the trip, we made it very clear to our guests that this trip to Iceland was not our honeymoon. We asked them to please plan on joining us on some of these wonderful adventures in the days following of our Iceland newly wedded bliss!

Sunday, April 15th:

Driving Day Tour of some of Iceland’s most iconic spots!

10:30am Guests Depart from our wedding hotel, Hotel Rangá to visit Keldur, home of the oldest Turf Houses in Iceland (15 min drive).

Next stop is one of the most scenic waterfalls in Iceland Gullfoss (1h 15 min drive).  Following, we will visit the most active Geyser in the world (erupting every 4-8 min) Strokkur (26 min drive).

Then, we are off to the Kerid Volcanic Crater Lake, (30 min drive) followed by a stopover at the Seltun/Krysuvik Lava Fields (1h drive time).

Our last stop was at the relaxing Blue Lagoon Geothermal Lake (1 hour drive time). Prices for the Blue Lagoon here.

This will be a good place to have dinner at, and after we have a therapeutic dip Chris and Ann will check in to their hotel the Hilton Reykjavik (45 min drive).

Monday, April 16th:

Scuba Diving/Snorkeling & Caving: Begin by exploring the hidden world of the lava field under the Þingvellir national park. Walking in a cave and discovering the marvels that volcanic activity has created in the past is a trip that everyone can undertake. The Gjábakkahellir cave is a perfect example of an Icelandic lava tube and is situated in one of the most active volcano areas in the world.  Scuba Diving or Snorkeling in the Silfra (in between the tectonic plates!) is our second adventure. The Silfra fissure is one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets, an otherworldly scene that is world famous for its heavenly shades of blue. The crystal clear water in the deep fissure gives you a feeling of being weightless as you float down with the lazy current.  6 hours total time.  See our post here for photos of our adventure!

Tuesday,  April 17th:

We will be hiking and ice climbing the Sólheimajökull Glacier on this 9 hour tour.  There is also a glacier walking tour that is less strenuous.

Wednesday,  April 18^th:

At 10:00am we will depart the Hilton for the Iceland National Museum in Reykjavik.  Next we will have lunch and some spectacular views at The Perlan.  After lunch we will depart on Icelandair Flight #603 to Toronto at 5:00pm.

30 Minutes: Brides before portraits- Alone, with bridesmaids, and immediate family.

30 Minutes: Grooms before portraits- Alone, with groomsmen, and immediate family.

30 Minutes before the ceremony start time: No formal portraits, details, candid photographs of guests arriving, last minute jitters, additional shots of your awesome details, and setup time for photographers.

30 Minutes-1 hour: Ceremony.

15-20 Minutes: Exit & Guest Greeting Line.

20-30 Minutes: Formal family portraits.

10-20 Minutes: Fun Bridal Party Portraits!

20-30 Minutes: Formal Couples Portraits; Relaxed and crazy fun ones too!

30-60 Minutes: An additional portrait spot at another locale?

30-45 Minutes: Cocktail Hour.

3-4 Hour: Reception Coverage.

First Look Wedding Day Schedule (seeing each other before):

30 Minutes: Formal Family Wedding Portraits.

30 Minutes before the ceremony start time: No formal portraits, details, candid photographs of guests arriving, last minute jitters, additional shots of your awesome details, and setup time for photographers.

30 Minutes-1 hour: Ceremony.

15-20 Minutes: Exit & Guest Greeting Line.

20-30 Minutes: Formal portraits with any additional important folks at the ceremony site.

30-60 Minutes: An additional portrait spot at another locale?

30-45 Minutes: Cocktail Hour.

3-4 Hours: Reception Coverage.

There you are… You have fallen in love with Iceland as your destination wedding location and cannot imagine getting married anywhere else.  Now you are in the process of listing all of the “must have” wedding details that need to get packed and happen. But…You are very specific about your wedding details and just are not sure if the obscure destination wedding location will be able to match every detail you are envisioning.

What to do? 

Answer: Import your wedding day items to your Iceland (or other) destination wedding location!

You may cringe at the thought of having to take the time to package and ship your wedding details to Iceland or elsewhere but here are the pros of doing so:

1.)   You will get exactly what you stylistically envisioned (and what you want) regardless of where your ceremony or reception are located.

2.)   In countries like Iceland you can bring in the standard 2 liters of wine/champagne per person for free, take advantage of it!

3.)   You’re guaranteed to have your items arrive on time.  If your checked bag doesn’t make it to your destination wedding location you could be without on your wedding day.

4.)   You’ll have more room for last minute items to put in your checked bag.

5.)   You will save money! Do your research, buy online, and have it drop shipped directly to your wedding hotel (let them know in advance).

Easy-Peasy Directions to Importing Your Wedding Day Goods:

• Prepay Duty to your vendor (if possible) so the vendor is responsible for the importation.
• If gathering the items and packing the box yourself use lightweight materials and wrap well for potential breakage.
• Have the post office mark as “Fragile.”
• Fill out the custom forms accurately with contents and cost.
• Get a tracking number if possible and track all the way through to its end delivery.
• If prepaying duty was not an option have your hotel add it to your bill upon arrival (Iceland hotels will do this if you have prepaid and reserved your location for a few days).
• Ship a minimum of 3-4 weeks before your wedding date (depending on your destination wedding location).
• Confirm with the vendor who shipped and the receiving location that it was received and put for safe keeping until your arrival (Or ship to your Iceland Wedding Planner for her to bring).
• If there are any light or heat sensitive items communicate that to all parties so your items stay 100% perfect.
• Make sure your destination wedding hotel clearly marks the packages and they only release to you or your wedding planner.

Real life examples from our Iceland Destination Wedding:

My husband and I planned our Iceland destination wedding in less than 6 months- from October to April 2011-2012.  We’re super planners and experienced Iceland wedding photographers  so we had a very good idea of what we liked and didn’t.  We chose the most dynamic place in Iceland to get married: Seljalandsfoss Waterfall in 2012. With a champagne toast at Vik Beach, a pit stop at the infamous wool shop and a final stop at Skogafoss Waterfall before heading back to Hotel Ranga for our reception.

Our biggest and most important detail hurdle was that we wanted over a 30 x 4 foot rose petal isle that was very dense with a very specific shade of pink (In my opinion, wedding colors are uber important for photographs!).  So that means I had to order 8 cups per square foot of my isle (see a helpful petal calculator here).  The Icelandic florists quoted me over $2,000 USD and they could only promise white petals and not my shade of pink.   It was not in our budget to have that additional cost no matter how much I wanted it.  But my Iceland wedding photographs absolutely needed colorful a rose petal walk way so I needed a thrifty way to make this happen.

So!  After lots of research and 20 samples later I found an amazing vendor called Flyboy Naturals who offers eco-friendly freeze dried rose petals.  Not only were they the best deal, but they were gorgeous, AND they would ship directly to Iceland!  I had our freeze dried rose petals stored for 1 month in a cool dark place and they were perfect at the waterfall!  See our Iceland waterfall wedding isle way here.  They are one of our preferred vendors so feel free to check them out or contact us to assist in your amazing aisle way creation!

Next big challenge was champagne for our wedding toast at Vik Beach.  We bought from favorite winery Domaine Chandon 20 Bottles of their Yountville Vintage Brut 2007.  Iceland has an importing rule of 2 liters per person so between my husband, myself, and 8 of our guests we got it handled in the middle of the Toronto Airport on the way to Iceland!

Linens were another item on our list we had a specific vision for and decided to bring in all of our own for our welcome dinner and actual wedding reception.  The Iceland welcome dinner (or some call it an Iceland Wedding Rehearsal Dinner) we chose a pin tuck design.  Silver pin tucked place mats and white napkins.  For our wedding reception at Hotel Ranga we purchased and packed chocolate rosette table runners and chocolate pin tuck napkins.  They made awesome packing for our favors, welcome bags, love letter ceremony box, wedding weekend attire, and our fragile Mr. and Mrs. champagne glasses.  It’s safe to say by purchasing our own items and importing them in for our Iceland destination wedding it saved us $1,000’s of dollars that we could put to our honeymoon in Bali!

You’ve chosen Iceland, lucky you!  You are one of the few in the world that have be proud of that!  Planning an Iceland wedding is a lot harder than you think.  Especially in a country where the internet is not used as a crutch as it is elsewhere.  You cannot just go to The Knot and pick your wedding vendors as you would here in the States.  Those wonderful in the country wedding vendors cannot get their name out there like we can here.  So we’re here to make that happen!  I know, planning your Iceland destination wedding during the holidays can be very stressful.  The best advice I can lend is make a list and take a break!  Your must be booked list ASAP should consist of at least the following:

1. The Date!
2. Book your Iceland Wedding Planner
3. Order save the dates or Iceland wedding invitations.
4. Book your Iceland destination wedding photographer (Please visit: Photos by Miss Ann)
5. Ceremony Location
6. Reception Location
7. Your plane tickets.
8. Hotel Rooms for Guests.
9. Order the dress and tux/suite.
10. Ceremony & Reception Design.
11. Flowers and Centerpieces
12. Relax!  Start back up after a little break!

Thanks for stopping by!  A fun fact about us… We went from having an Iceland destination wedding to a honeymoon in Bali, Indonesia.  We loved having the two extremes for our wedding adventures.  Our honeymoon was featured on the fabulous Aisle Perfect / Perfete blog, so a take moment to check it out!

2: a period of unusual harmony especially following the establishment of a new relationship

3: a trip or vacation taken by a newly married couple

Ah, yes every engaged couples “light at the end of the tunnel”- the honeymoon.  Long awaited and well deserved.  After planning our Iceland destination wedding from October 2011 to April 2012 and coordinating travels and activities for our 40 guests we knew we would need a break right after the wedding, not another vacation.  To us, it seemed like terrible etiquette to have all the people we love fly in for just a few days of wedding events and then not spend time with them.

Whether you are planning a local wedding in Plymouth, Michigan or destination wedding at in Iceland I assure you, breaking tradition and waiting to take your honeymoon 6 months later is the way to go.  Every bride gets wrapped up into the excitement and planning of the day and once she goes back to normal life with no wedding planning to keep her busy a type of “post wedding depression” sets in.  Even being a super planner and being a destination wedding photographer as myself (please visit: www.PhotosByMissAnn.com), I was actually surprised at what a void I felt.  Planning my Iceland wedding became a hobby.  The excitement level crashed upon our return to Plymouth Michigan; my wedding was now ancient history.

Luckily, I had my honeymoon to plan! Bam, easy transition out of my post-wedding-blues!  Much like the same way we attacked finding a destination wedding location we compiled a list of possible honeymoon locations:

1. The Maldives
2. Antarctica (via Santiago, Chile)
3. Bali, Indonesia
4. Faroe Islands

Being a wedding photographer and specializing in destination wedding photography, we needed to work around my high season of photographing and plan for a trip in November or December.  That sadly eliminated the Faroe Islands since there would only be 4-6 hours of daylight during that time.  In the end, we chose Bali, Indonesia.  We rented “The Honeymoon Villa” in Candidasa.  Candidasa is 1.5 hours northeast of the DPS airport and the waypoint to all of the adventure and amazing food the country has to offer.

Each couple has to decide what sort of honeymoon they want to have and we are 100% action-packed adventure (and “sleep when you’re dead,” sort of travelers).  Our itinerary truly reflected the same.  If you’re reading this and are like us I suggest the following awesomeness for your destination honeymoon:

Day 1: Fly to LAX and stay overnight.

Day 2 and 3: Arrive in Bali (DPS airport).

Day 4: Check out our favorite beach Padang Padang then head to Ayana Resort for their “Pesta Lobster” dining experience.  Uber romantic!

Day 5: Check out the Tirtagangga Water Palace and the White Sand Beach. 11pm leave for the Sunrise Hike to the top of the highest peak in Bali, Mount Agung.

Day 6: Hike 9,900 feet to watch the sunrise on Bali’s highest volcano and then visit Pura Besakih (Temple in the Clouds).

Day 7:Day trip to the oldest most traditional Baliense village Tenganan and and then go to Ubud to shop the 4 story market.

Day 8:  Go Canyoning in Bali

Day 9: Head to the Taro jungle and ride an elephant at the Elephant Safari Park.

Day 10: Scuba Dive Tulamben – USAT Liberty Wreck.

Day 11: Spend the afternoon at Pandang Bai Beach, dinner at Rouge in Canidasa, and fly out of DPS at midnight.

As we planned our honeymoon in Bali, we debated on hiring a professional photographer to do some post wedding / honeymoon photography locally.  But, me being the perfectionist I am, I could not bear the thought though of anyone else photographing my honeymoon, but me!  So alas, against my husband’s pleas not to bring… the professional Nikon gear was packed!

Honeymoon Photography is a new upcoming phenomenon. As couples begin to choose more out of the norm locations (or luxury honeymoon locales) this becomes increasing important to document.  This is the couples chance to forever seal their wedding year glamor and turn it to printable legend.  It is certainly not every day or even every year you can take such an elaborately striking vacation so take advantage of it.  Forever pause this time in your lives and hire a professional to capture it!

Picture this… It’s just the two of you- no family, no friends, no obligations to worry about and certainly no time constraints as you did during your wedding day.  Plus ladies,you can choose to have another fun dress to be photographed in (or don your gorgeous wedding dress again!), bonus!  Destination honeymooning in Iceland, Fiji, Bora Bora, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, or even Bali Indonesia is a lifetime adventure and you need to capture that matchless beauty in couples portraits!  Especially if you have chosen to stay in one of those glorious over the ocean bures!

After having a destination wedding in Iceland in April my husband and I needed a break, not honeymoon!  So we waited 7 months on our official honeymoon and decided on Bali Indonesia.  Choosing such an exotically dreamy place, we knew we needed to document it.  We professionally photographed our own couples portraits and also hoped to fast-track this new trend in our destination wedding photography packages going forward.  We began our photography adventure at Padang Padang Beach (the Bali beach featured in the movie Eat, Pray, Love) and it was stunning!  Next up was a very romantic sunset dinner on Ayana Resorts Private Jetty.  A few days later we finished with a couple of random spots in around the city we stayed, Candidasa.

What a fun week of portrait sessions!  My husband and I were relaxed, playful, and uber romantic as we had every spot to ourselves.  I was so excited that I was already envisioning 19×23’’ acrylic prints to hang and designing our Christmas cards in my head!  This was truly a special session for us.  Here we were in the middle of an unusual countryside celebrating our 7 month anniversary (delaying the honeymoon was the best decision) and we were savoring every second.

Our honeymoon portrait session was unlike any other session we have to date experienced.  It was not as awkward as our engagement session nor as stressful as our wedding day- it was us in the essence of the moment and at our best.  These are by far my favorite images we have taken because taking them was an adventure in itself!  I know many of you may not have ever thought of it, but why not take your wedding photographer on your honeymoon?  Especially those of you bride and grooms that are planning destination weddings- I bet all of your destination wedding photographers would offer you a special package to continue on with you on your honeymoon too, just ask!  The wedding is critical but the honeymoon is epically you!

By planning a destination wedding, you are already committing to go outside of the general wedding planning “box.”  So why not continue with adding an element to your wedding ceremony content that is as unique as your love?

Since we’re local and destination wedding photographers and own, Photos by Miss Ann, we have witnessed endless amounts of ceremonies that draw in religious, cultural, and spiritual elements and have seen them done in a hundred of different ways.  Think: unity candle, tying the knot ceremony, sand ceremony, Irish braid, crowning, hand ceremony, etc.  When we were planning our destination wedding we were looking for an alternative for our Iceland wedding.

After researching back into historical wedding ceremonies, we found it: The Love Letter Ceremony.  It gracefully combined our affection for history, our love for each other, and provided a piece of our own history with our parents as well.

The idea:

You and your soon to be write a letter to each other talking about the following:

1. How you felt when you met.
2. Your favorite adventure together.
3. How much you have grown from then to now.
4. Your feelings as you anticipate your wedding day.
5. Your wishes for your future together.
6. Your promise to him/her.

The Parents:

1. The bride’s parents write a letter directly to her only.  Expressing their excitement for her arrival, her childhood, successes, how proud they are, advice, etc.
2. The groom’s parents write a letter directly to her only.  Articulating their excitement for his arrival, his childhood, successes, how proud they are, and advice, etc.
3. Each set of parents then write a letter addressing the couple together stating their excitement for finding each other, the marriage, wishes for the future, and words of wisdom.

This is how described the Icelandic love letter ceremony to our guests on the back of our Iceland destination wedding timeline card:

“During the wedding we will perform a ‘love letter ceremony.’  This entails the bride and groom writing heartfelt love letters to each other prior to their wedding day.  Each of the parents have also written letters of encouragement, future wishes, and advice to make the couple’s marriage strong.  The wedding officiant will then lock the letters in a box.  The letters will be opened at a later time as a celebration and reflection of their marriage.”

How amazing, right?  It gives me goose bumps just thinking about reading them as we celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary when our parents may have passed and we may have a family of our own!  This is a very special ceremony I believe has an enormous long-term impact to all.

We hauled the box from Plymouth, Michigan to Hella Iceland to our wedding ceremony at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, then to Skógafoss waterfall and finally out to Vik Beach for Iceland wedding photos and a champagne toast!

How to create your own local or destination wedding love letter ceremony:

• Buy or build a box that will be big enough for letters and additional mementos.  We had an 8×11 box that was ~3 inches wide.  This was big enough for our letters, vows, speeches, our bouquet/boutonniere when it dried out, etc.  It was travel friendly.  We brought from Michigan to Iceland with no problem.
• Some people like the idea of it being large enough to house a bottle of wine/champagne and wine glasses – your choice!
• Have your names painted or engraved on the front.  Example, we had the following:

• Purchase super cute acid-free stationary.  Ours was white with a simple red heart at the top and a matching red envelope- Our Amazon Storefront may be a good source for you on this.
• Plan what you are going to write at least 30 days in advance!
• Give your parents time to plan and write too!
• Get the letters in advance and put them in the box for safe keeping until the ceremony.
• Our wording for the love letter ceremony follows below:

Wording for a Destination Wedding Love Letter Ceremony:
“Christopher and Ann have chosen as a couple to unite together in a Love Letter ceremony.

This box contains a love letter from each to the other.   The letters describe the good qualities they find in one another, the reasons they fell in love, and their reasons for choosing to marry today in Iceland.   Ann’s mother, Irene and Christopher’s parents, Donna and Bill have also written the each a letter individually and a letter to the couple expressing their hopes and advice for their future together.  The letters are sealed in individual envelopes and the couple has not seen what the other has written.
I recommend that you keep the box in a place of honor prominently displayed in your home as a constant reminder of your commitment to each other.

Christopher and Ann, should you ever find your marriage enduring insurmountable hardships, you are to as a couple, open this box, reflect while reading the letters you wrote to one another when you were united as a couple, in marriage.   By reading these love letters you will reflect upon the reasons you fell in love and chose to marry each other here in Iceland today.

The hope is, however, that you will never have a reason to open this box.   And if this is the case, you are to open this box to share and enjoy on your 25^th wedding anniversary!”
All that being said, Christopher and Ann, you may now lock the box and be forever bonded.”
