Why Is the Sand Black?

One of the most memorable features you see when you visit Iceland is the black sand beaches… And a big part of what makes a Foggy Summer Proposal here so unique, is the black sand!  After all, you’ll see that the basalt stacks are fogged throughout the session but somehow it still screamed EPIC!  Iceland’s black sand beaches are formed from volcanic activity.  To illustrate, this happens when molten lava flows into the ocean, it cools rapidly and shatters into tiny fragments.  Next, over time, the waves grind these fragments into fine, dark sand.  Which then  gives the result is shoreline that is constantly shaped by the powerful forces of nature.

Furthermore, at Víkurfjara, the black sand stretches wide and uninterrupted, creating a dramatic setting.  Furthermore, in foggy conditions, the muted tones of the landscape become even more pronounced, allowing the emotions of the moment to take center stage.  Which is exactly what happened in this foggy summer proposal!

The History and Landscape of Reynisfjall

Iceland Offbeat Gem: Víkurfjara Beach

For this monumental moment, Veeral chose Víkurfjara…  Which is the quieter and less-traveled side of Reynisfjall Mountain.  For instance, while many visitors flock to the more well-known beaches nearby, Víkurfjara offers a sense of privacy that is often rare in Iceland, especially during Summer.  Meanwhile, it’s the kind of place where you can hear your own footsteps in the sand and feel like the entire coastline belongs just to you!  Especially if you find you way there before sunrise…

On the day of the proposal, a soft fog rolled in from the Atlantic, which wrapped around the towering sea stacks and cliffs in a dreamlike haze.  Additionally, the visibility shifted constantly, revealing and concealing the landscape in a way that felt almost cinematic… Wild, right?  But I will say, it was the perfect backdrop for a Foggy Summer Proposal!  Aka, romantic, moody, and unforgettable!!

The Iceland Proposal Moment!

Veeral and Cara walked along the shoreline, taking in the quiet beauty of the beach.  But little did Cara know that our Vik Wedding Photographer was lurking around!  So as the waves lapped softly against the black sand, and seabirds circled overhead, Veeral dropped to one knee!

Cara’s reaction said everything… Total surprise, joy, and emotion all at once!  The fog seemed to pause with them, creating a stillness that made the moment feel suspended in time.  For example, it was simple, heartfelt, and deeply personal.  After she said yes, the couple embraced, laughing and soaking in the moment.  Later, Veeral lifted Cara into the air as they celebrated, the ocean behind them and the mist swirling around. It was pure joy, perfectly framed by Iceland’s wild beauty…

If you’ve fallen in love with photos of dramatic moss-covered canyons and secret waterfalls (like we shared in our Múlagljúfur post), this adventure is absolutely worth adding to your self drive Iceland itinerary.  First, I’ll walk you through the history of how Eldgjá was formed.  Second, the best way to get there safely. Third, what to expect on the hike. Fourth, tips for making it an unforgettable day!  Let’s do this!!

Eldgjá History

Eldgjá Canyon is literally birthed from a massive volcanic eruption in 939 AD.  Which is specifically part of the Katla volcanic system.  In fact, this eruption produced enormous lava flows and shaped the land you’ll hike on today.  Furthermore, the canyon stretches for about 40 km (or 25 miles) and reaches depths of 150 m (or 490 ft).  Likely, it’s hard to wrap your head around the fact that you’ll be walking in the very fissure that poured out fire and ash over a thousand years ago!  Am I right?!

Inside Eldgjá sits the beautiful Ófærufoss Waterfall.  To illustrate, it’s a two-tiered waterfall.  Additionally, it once had a natural stone arch spanning across it (sadly it collapsed in the 1990’s).  However, today the falls drop gracefully into the canyon, next to picturesque moss and black volcanic rock.  Truly a photographer’s dream come true!

Why Eldgjá Should Be on Your Iceland Bucket List

There’s something truly transformative about standing inside a canyon that once flowed with fire.  But now, centuries later lined with moss and flowing water.  This historical spot, Eldgjá combines history, geology, and natural beauty in a way that feels truly magical!  No matter if you’re planning an adventurous Iceland wedding adventure, elopement, or just a day hike, this gem is a must-see in the Highlands!  For instance, imagine the photos… Volcanic cliffs, lush moss glowing in the midnight sun, and Ófærufoss roaring in the background.  This is the Iceland that feels untouched, wild, and absolutely romantic!

When to Visit the Fire Canyon

Because Eldgjá is in the Icelandic Highlands, it’s only accessible with a proper 4×4 or super jeep when the F-roads are open (usually late-June through mid-September).  Note: Outside of this window the roads are closed / impassable due to snow, river levels, and overall safety conditions.  Always check road.is and safetravel.is before you set off.

How to Get to Eldgjá Canyon

Next, getting to Eldgjá is an adventure in itself, truly!  First, let’s talk about the starting point… The closest town is Kirkjubæjarklaustur along the South Coast.  For instance, it is a perfect place to fuel up, grab snacks, and stay the night.  Second, from the Ring Road (Route 1), turn inland onto F208 (Fjallabaksleið Nyrðri).  Next, from there, take F223 / Eldgjárvegur which leads you directly to the canyon’s main car park and ranger hut.

Third, let’s talk about the vehicle you need again… You absolutely need a 4×4 vehicle with good clearance, your truck needs to be rated and allowed to be driving F-roads and ideally experience crossing rivers.  Fourth, if this makes you nervous, booking a guided Highlands tour is a stress-free option.  Our friends at Gravel Travel can happily get you there!  Additionally, they offer our followers a -10% discount by using the code: WEDDING.

Lastly, you might wonder about parking… There are multiple small parking lots.  The shortest hike to Ófærufoss starts right after a river crossing on F208.  Which is the main Eldgjá ranger station car park offers a longer, but still moderate trail.

Hiking to Ófærufoss Waterfall

Now for the fun part… The hike through Eldgjá  and to Ófærufoss Waterfall!  Here are the specs and what to expect…

• Trail Length: Depending on where you park, the trail to Ófærufoss ranges is around ~2km one way (1-3 hours round-trip).
• Difficulty: Easy to Moderate.
• Terrain: The path follows the river and is relatively flat, with a mix of gravel, rocks, mossy ground, and small loose stones.
• Elevation Gain: Minimal for the short walk (~80 meters), more if you hike up to the waterfall viewpoint.
• Views: You’ll hear Ófærufoss before you see it.  Rounding the canyon bend, the waterfall suddenly appears!  Exciting, right?!
• Note: If you have extra energy, extend your adventure to Gjátindur, the nearby peak.  This is a 5 – 14.5 km (3–4 hour or more depending on loop or longer hike) round-trip hike with steep challenging sections.  But the reward is a panorama view over the canyon and surrounding Southern Icelandic Highlands!

Packing Checklist for Eldgjá

One of my favorite things to do before I lived in Iceland was packing for Iceland!  That being said, I crafted perfect Amazon Packing Lists and also wrote about how to pack a “go bag!”  Make sure you check them out along with this short list…

• 4×4 rental + Full Tank of Fuel
• Waterproof Jacket & Pants
• Warm Layers
• Hiking Boots
• Snacks + 1–2 liters of water per person
• GPS/GPX file of the Trail
• Headlamp (even in summer, just in case)
• Hiking Poles (if you’re an unsure hiker)
• Camera / Phone

Terrain & Safety Tips

Next, trails are well-marked but fragile.  Therefore, please stay on paths to protect the moss.  In some cases, it takes 80-100 years to grow back a foot print you leave on it!  Now just like the weather in Iceland, the weather in Eldgjá changes quickly.  Hello Icelandic Highlands!  So it is important to bring / dress in waterproof layers, sturdy boots, gloves, and a hat, even in summer.  Also be aware, there’s no food, fuel, or cell service in this area of Highlands.  Stock up before leaving the Ring Road.  And the restrooms are hit or miss depending on the month / day you are there.  Additionally, if you plan to hike the rim or Gjátindur, trekking poles and a GPS/GPX track are helpful.  Lastly, make sure you log your plan with SafeTravel.is too!

Eldgjá Elopement Adventure

Furthermore, if you’re considering a Highland elopement in Iceland, it’s an incredible backdrop for exchanging vows far from the big Ring Road crowds.  However, if Eldgjá is on your list for Iceland wedding photos, it is best to reach out to the establishments who oversee it’s protection before going… Both Vatnajökull National Park (and Icelandic Nature Conservation Agency) and Katla Geopark have this area in their boundaries.  But hiring a local Iceland Wedding Planner, will always be best to help you sort out any permits and permissions.  Feel free to contact us to get that conversation started!

Iceland’s “Unity” Waterfall for Your Dream Wedding

If you’re envisioning an unforgettable Iceland wedding surrounded by natural beauty, Hjálparfoss Waterfall should be on your radar.  Additionally, it offers a truly symbolic backdrop where two waterfalls join into one… Truly making it a symbolically stunning place to say “I do!”  Very fitting for a wedding in Iceland, right?

Furthermore, Hjalparfoss translates directly to, “Help Waterfall.”  And some might say this coincides with history….  To illustrate, in the past, travelers crossing the challenging Sprengisandur route (F-26) would reach Hjálparfoss and find fresh water.  Therefore, providing instant relief after their difficult journey through the Highlands.

How to Get to Hjálparfoss

Reaching Hjálparfoss is surprisingly easy for a Highland waterfall.  For example, it’s about a 2-hour drive North East from Reykjavík.  Meanwhile, the route takes you through the stunning Þjórsárdalur Valley.

Follow Route 1 (Ring Road) to Route 30 to 32, then take the signposted turnoff for Hjálparfoss.  The road is paved until the final short gravel stretch, which is usually accessible in late Spring (mid-May) to early Fall (mid-September) with a regular car.  In winter or shoulder seasons, a 4×4 vehicle or super jeep is required.  Feel free to follow this Google Map to get yourself there.

The Hike Down to the Falls

From the parking lot and taking a few steps out of your vehicle, you’ll be able to see the waterfall without hiking down as you’ll see in the images below.  Next, there are two paths which lead down to the waterfall.  For instance, one going down from the RIGHT and one from the LEFT.

Furthermore, when looking at the waterfall the LEFT side path gradually descends down.  Whereas, the one on the RIGHT has steps and is steeper.  Both meet at the main platform in front of the waterfall.

Note: There are ropes and signs now limiting you from veering off of the path.  All of these wedding photos were taken with permission and long before any rules and restrictions were in place by the Environmental Agency of Iceland.  Please respect the changes.

Where is Merkurker Canyon?

If you’re embarking on a fabulous self-drive itinerary around Iceland and are passing through South Iceland you should add this spot to your schedule!  A few things to consider before finding your way there…

Firstly, Merkurker Canyon is located in the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve.  Secondly, it is around a 2.5 hour drive East from the Reykjavik city limits.  Thirdly, it’s best to ensure you are driving a 4×4 with higher clearance that is rated for F-Roads.  Fourth, it is best to find your way here between April to October depending on weather and road conditions.  Why?  Because outside of this time frame, you will likely need a super jeep and an experienced guide to get you there.

Meanwhile, this stunning valley in the Icelandic highlands between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull.  In fact, this area is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and remote beauty, making it an ideal place for secluded elopement!

How to Get to Thorsmork & Merkurker Canyon

To reach Merkurker Canyon, visitors must take a 4×4 with higher clearance or a super jeep due to the rugged terrain and river crossings along the way.  Note: The difference between the two is the time of year and what the Iceland weather is doing.  For example, even during April – October rivers ca swell to a larger scale which could prevent your rented 4×4 from crossing them safely.  Please do not take any unneeded risks.

Ideally, you’ll already be on your way discovering South Iceland, maybe even staying at Hotel Stracta in Hella.  But regardless, you’ll want to take Route 1 (the famed Ring Road) East towards the town of Hvolsvöllur or famous waterfall, Seljalandsfoss (the one you can walk behind).  Next, if coming from the West to the East, you’ll turn LEFT onto Road #249.

Here you’ll take the paved road until it becomes gravel.  Follow it back for ~10km.  Here are GPS Coordinates: 63°40’34.3″N 19°48’48.6″W to the turn off on the RIGHT hand side and here is a Google Map link.  Special Note: This road is often deeply rutted with potholes and can have several river crossings no matter the time of year.  Ready to see what the hike is like?  Continue reading below…

Guide to Vik Iceland

So then here is the million dollar question… Why should you choose to spend a few nights in this magical South Iceland village versus just driving through it?  Short Answer: Because since 2015, Vik has quickly become a DESTINATION!  In fact, you could easily spend 3 nights here and still leaving wanting to do and see more…

To illustrate, from the moment I (Ann Peters) first visited and drove down the iconic mountain pass, Reynisfjall going on two decades ago, this tiny town captured by heart and soul.  Although not really a believer in “past lives” I felt a connection to this place that was on another level.  No other place out of the 100+ countries I’ve spent time in provided such a like “home” vibe to me.  And each time I would return the connection felt deeper.  Likely the exact reason the place led me to meeting my soulmate, my husband David Geir and why we chose to build our #vikdreamhouse.

How to Visit Vik:

Alright, so now that you are intrigued… You might be wondering specs on the town and where it is…

First, it is the southernmost village on the mainland of Iceland and home to around ~800 residents depending on the time of year.  Second, despite its small size, Vík is a significant stop along the famous Ring Road (Route 1).  There are countless stunning views, unique attractions, fantastic places to stay and eat too!  Third, the village is approximately 186 km (115 miles) from Reykjavík, making it a scenic two-and-a-half-hour drive from the capital.  Likely a bit more depending on weather conditions).   Fourth, if you’re arriving in Iceland at Keflavík International Airport (KEF), expect a drive of about three hours to reach Vík.

History of Hjörleifshöfði

Believe it or not, this mountain use to be an island!  Also has been the backdrop to various historical events over the centuries.  For instance, Viking settlements to agricultural endeavors and now to commercial property.  The remnants of old farm buildings and structures offer a glimpse into the lives of those who once called this rugged terrain home.

First, Hjörleifshöfði is named after Hjörleifur Hróðmarsson.  Who is one of Iceland’s first settlers and the blood brother of Ingólfur Arnarson, who is often considered the country’s first permanent settler.  Second, according to the Landnámabók (The Book of Settlements), Hjörleifur met a tragic end at the hands of his Irish slaves.

To illustrate, the slaves tricked him saying there was a polar bear that was on land and they needed to kill.  However, they instead took his weapons and murdered him instead and fled to the nearby Westman Islands.  Once his blood brother Ingólfur found out he traveled to the south to find his body and give him a proper Viking burial.  Therefore, Hjörleifur is buried on the top of the mountain, and his grave is marked by a mound that can still be seen and visited today…

Guide to Viking Grave Hike in Vik

Hiking Hjörleifshöfði is a journey through time and nature.  The hike is an easy to moderate challenge, making it suitable for most hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.  Further, the mountain is approximately 221 meters or 725 feet tall.  Ready to venture up?  Here’s a step-by-step guide to reaching the summit and witnessing the Viking grave in Vik!

Hjörleifshöfði Starting Point:

Begin your hike from the parking area located off Route 1 (the Ring Road).  The turn-off to Hjörleifshöfði is well-marked, and the road leading to the parking area is accessible for most vehicles the majority of the year.  However, this may not be the case between November-April depending on ice and snow levels.

The Ascent:

The trailhead starts at the base of the west side of the mountain (from the main entrance point).  The initial part of the hike involves a steady ascent along a well-trodden path.  As you climb, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, including the Mýrdalssandur flood plain and the distant coastline.

Historical Viking Grave in Iceland:

Once you’re at the top of the mountain, you’ll find the burial mound of Hjörleifur Hróðmarsson.  Take a moment to reflect on the history and significance of this site.  Further along the trail, you’ll encounter the ruins of old farm buildings, offering a glimpse into the past lives of those who inhabited this area.

• Weather: Icelandic weather can be unpredictable, so dress in layers and be prepared for changing conditions.  Furthermore, a waterproof jacket and sturdy hiking boots are essential.
• Safety: The trail can be slippery, especially after rain, so take your time and watch your footing.  Always let someone know your hiking plans too.  Additionally, log your plans on Safe Travel.
• Yoda Cave: Around the backside of the mountain there is a famed natural cave folks rave about.
• Driving: Off-road driving is illegal in Iceland.  Please respect the signs and ropes the landowners have put up to stop this.
• Respect the Environment: Hjörleifshöfði is privately owned land and fragile environment with historical significance.  To illustrate, please stick to marked paths and respect the natural and historical sites.

History of Loftsalahellir Cave

Loftsalahellir Cave is more than just a geological formation, it transports you back into to Iceland’s rich history.  In fact, the cave’s name directly translates to “Air Halls Cave.”  Which showcases the historical use as a shelter and a meeting place.

To illustrate, according to local legends, it was once a hideout for bandits fleeing from their crimes.  And a sanctuary for those seeking refuge from weather.  Meanwhile, the cave’s strategic location and its concealed entrance makes it an offbeat spot to visit.

Katla UNESCO Global GeoPark

Loftsalahellir Cave is a part of Katla GeoPark which is a massive area between the towns of Hvolsvöllur to slightly outside of the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.  The UNESCO area celebrates geology in South Iceland.

Likely you might wonder how the cave itself is made, right?  Iceland’s volcanic activity is 100% the reason this fabulous cave exists!  It is carved out of the porous palagonite tuff rock.  Additionally, inside the South Iceland cave, the walls are textured and also alive with ferns and other flora.

How to Get to Loftsalahellir Cave

Finding your way to Loftsalahellir Cave is an adventure in itself!  For example, from the city limits of Reykjavik the journey begins with a drive East through Iceland’s iconic landscapes along Route 1.  You’ll pass by historic farms, famous waterfalls, glaciers, and countless other remarkable scenes.

After you pass by the turn off for Sólheimajökull Glacier you’ll continue driving East toward Dyrhólaey Lighthouse for 8-10 minutes.  Then across the street from Skeiðflatarkirkja you’ll see a turn off for Road #218 which is also called Dyrhólavegur.  Continue to drive 1.5 miles or 2.5km and you’ll find the turn off for Loftsalahellir Cave on the LEFT side before the entrance to the Dyrhólaey Lighthouse and Nature Preserve.

In & Outside of the Cave

Discovering this cave will make you feel further connected to the Icelandic landscape.  For instance, stepping into Loftsalahellir Cave, visitors are greeted by a spacious interior that almost feels like a natural amphitheater.  The cave’s roof is adorned with historic stalactites, greenery, all while the floor is scattered with rocks and dirt.  Natural light filters in through the entrance, casting dramatic shadows and highlighting the 3-D textures of the cave walls.

(Þórsmörk) Thorsmork Hiking Trails

An area of the highlands that is mostly accessible year round with the right vehicle is named, Þórsmörk (Thorsmork).  Firstly, it is within South Iceland.  Second, if you have visited or will visit the iconic Seljalandsfoss Waterfall you were close!  For example, if you would have continued up the road where it shifts to an F-Road you would be on your way there.  Third, the area is filled with dynamic hiking routes like the following:

Valahnúkur

Stakkholtsgjá

Nauthúsagil Waterfall

But there are actually many more picturesque hikes within to embark on!  For instance, today’s Iceland Wedding Planner featured location is a waterfall named Stigafoss.

How to Find Stigafoss

In order to get to Thorsmork and Stigafoss, you will need a 4×4 vehicle or a super jeep depending on the season and conditions.  Why?  Because the road is an F-Road, has river crossings and is deeply rutted with potholes.  Please ensure your vehicle is insured for F-Roads before venturing on.

Meanwhile, the best land marker to get you on your way there would be to first map to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall in South Iceland which is between the tiny town of Hvolsvöllur and Skogar (Skogafoss Waterfall).

Drive Times (one way depending on traffic):

• Downtown Reykjavik to Stigafoss = 2.5 hours
• Selfoss to Stigafoss Waterfall = 1.5 hour
• From Hvolsvöllur = 1 hour
• Vik to Stigafoss = 1.5 hour

Once you pass the turn off going to Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui Waterfalls, you’ll keep going straight on 249 for 5 kilometers.  Next, the road changes from 249 to F-249.  There are river crossings but sometimes they dry up.  But again, please make sure you’re in the right kind of vehicle so no mishaps occur.  You’ll stay on F-249 for ~11km or so and you’ll see the waterfall on your RIGHT side.  Note: If not in a super jeep or truck on at least 35” tires, it may be best to hike from the main road (adds ~15 minutes to your journey).  After all, better safe than sorry!

Stigafoss Hiking Specs

Stigafoss is below the subglacial volcano Eyjafjallajökull.  Truly a picturesque and exciting hike in Iceland!

• Distance: ~1 km / .6 miles round trip from the F-Road and half that if you take the bumpy track.
• Hike Times: 15-30 minutes depending on pace / situation.
• Terrain: Large rocks, dirt, mud, stone, loose rocks, grass in parts, and several foot river crossings.
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Elevation Gain: ~200 feet
• Waterfall Height: ~ 450 feet tall
