There are Iceland elopements, and then there are adventures that feel like they belong in another world… Leo and Kimberlee’s October Sunrise Ice Cave Elopement was definitely the latter! From getting ready at Hotel Vík well before dawn came, to saying their vows on a bridge suspended over a rushing glacial river, their wedding day was a journey through some of South Iceland’s most incredible landscapes! Ice caves, black sand beaches, basalt formations, waterfalls, sea arches and mountaintop views all became part of their story! A Peaceful Start at Hotel Vík
Firstly, their adventure began before the sun had even made its appearance. In fact, at Hotel Vík, Leo and Kimberlee settled into the morning as our professional hair and makeup team began getting them ready for the day ahead. Secondly, our Iceland wedding photographer was there from the beginning, capturing all of those quiet in-between moments, the anticipation, the details, the final touches and the excitement of knowing that an extraordinary day was about to begin! Thirdly, once they were ready, it was time to step outside, and begin their journey to their sunrise ice cave elopement adventure!
Sunrise Ice Cave Ceremony Like No Other!
After the soon to be newlyweds loaded into a Super Jeep and headed toward one Katla Glacier outlet. Additionally, our fabulous super jeep driver dueled as the perfect storyteller sharing all of the need-to-know details of the area. For example, from the folklore and geology surrounding the area. Next, it was time for their unforgettable sunrise ice cave elopement ceremony to begin… Leo and Kimberlee exchanged their vows on a natural bridge inside an ice cave, with a river flowing beneath them through the glacier. How incredible, right?!
Meanwhile, surrounded by walls of glistening blue ice and the sound of glacial water rushing below, they stood together and professed their lifetime love for each other. There were no rows of chairs or aisle, just the two of them, the glacier and the wild landscape of Iceland! After exchanging rings, they also had a traditional hand fastening ceremony. Afterwards, they sealed the incredible moment with a kiss! Frankly, it was intimate, dramatic and wonderfully Icelandic!
Chasing Ice: Caves, Glacial Features & Elopement Portraits
Of course, the adventure didn’t end after the ceremony! With their vows exchanged, Leo and Kimberlee set off to explore even more of the surrounding ice. They ventured through two different ice caves, discovering constantly changing textures, colors and formations carved by nature. Every turn offered something new for their Iceland elopement photographer to capture! To illustrate, from brilliant blue ice, dramatic formations, rushing water and the couple navigating this incredible frozen landscape together.
Where the Mountains Meet the Sea
From the frozen glacier dynamics, the couple headed toward one of Iceland’s most dramatic landscapes, the coastlines! Furthermore, the newlyweds next stop was a remote, desolate beach surrounded by magnificent basalt rock formations. The raw contrasts created an entirely different atmosphere from their morning on the ice. For instance, the beach gave Leo and Kimberlee room to slow down and explore. Like walking among the rocks, taking in the enormous landscape around them and, of course, capturing some incredible Iceland elopement photographs too! One of the best things about an Iceland elopement is exactly this kind of variety! For example, in a single day, you can be at a glacier to a volcanic beach and feel like you’ve entered an entirely different world!
Adventure to a Hidden Waterfall
Next, the couple continued their journey to a beautiful waterfall located off the beaten path. Away from the crowds, the waterfall offered another intimate moment in the middle of their adventure. Here, Leo and Kimberlee had another opportunity to explore together and enjoy the quieter side of South Iceland.
Exploring the Private Side of Dyrhólaey
Furthermore, their journey continued along Iceland’s spectacular southern coastline, eventually bringing them to the private side of Dyrhólaey Sea Arch Beach. Dyrhólaey is one of South Iceland’s most recognizable coastal landmarks, but experiencing it away from the busiest viewpoints creates a completely different feeling!
360 Degrees of Iceland from Reynisfjall
And then it was time to go up. The couple made their way to the top of Reynisfjall, where they were rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views across the surrounding landscape. In fact, from this perspective, the scale of South Iceland really comes into focus… Likewise, the mountains, glaciers, coastline, black sand beaches and the open North Atlantic stretching toward the horizon. After spending the day exploring throughout their sunrise ice cave elopement, Leo and Kimberlee got to experience their elopement from above! Truly, the perfect place to pause, take it all in and appreciate just how much they had experienced since leaving Hotel Vík that morning.
Ending the Adventure at Berg
Lastly, following a full day of experiencing glaciers, running around beaches, waterfalls, sea arches and mountain views, there was only one thing left to do: relax! Leo and Kimberlee returned to Hotel Vík and settled in for a cozy dinner at Berg Restaurant. Their sunrise ice cave elopement had taken them through some of Iceland’s most spectacular landscapes… But more importantly, it gave them a wedding day that was completely their own!
