Vik Apartments Wedding
Late September is one of the most magical and rich in color times for a dynamic elopement in Iceland. After all, the summer crowds have largely disappeared, while autumn begins painting the moss-covered lava fields with rich golden tones. The days remain long enough for multiple adventures, yet the evenings become dark enough to offer the possibility of witnessing the Aurora Borealis. On September 25th 2024, South Iceland gave us everything!
Bright sunshine illuminated the glacier ice, crisp mountain air made every stop refreshing, and the constantly changing Icelandic weather created dramatic skies that made every photograph unique and the wind making the couple look whimsical. In fact, throughout the day, every destination looked completely different from the last, making the entire wedding feel like a journey across several worlds…
Every incredible wedding day begins with a comfortable place to get ready, and the Vík Apartments provided the perfect starting point. Located in our fabulous coastal town of Vík, the apartments offer modern accommodations with spectacular mountain views while placing couples just minutes away from many of South Iceland’s most iconic locations. The relaxed atmosphere allowed the couple to enjoy a peaceful morning before stepping into one of the most adventurous wedding days imaginable. Plus if you have food allergies or Celiac Disease, it gives you tools to cook your own food safely. After getting ready together and with go bags in hand, the pair loaded into the super jeep to begin their dynamic elopement adventure!
Dynamic Elopement Ceremony
One of the greatest advantages of planning a dynamic elopement is the freedom to let the day evolve naturally. To illustrate, instead of rushing from location to location, we designed a timeline that allowed the couple to fully experience each destination. Their ceremony wasn’t simply about exchanging vows, it became part of an adventure.
Every stop added another chapter to their story:

- A breathtaking vow exchange deep inside an ancient glacier

Rather than spending the day inside a traditional venue, they experienced Iceland itself as their wedding venue. And what couple wouldn’t want that?!
Eloping in an Ice Cave
One of the most unforgettable moments of the day took place inside a stunning natural ice cave.
Surrounded by glowing blue glacier walls sculpted by centuries of moving ice, the couple exchanged their vows in complete privacy. The translucent ice reflected soft natural light throughout the cave, creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else on Earth.
Standing together inside the glacier felt almost surreal. Every curve of the frozen walls reminded us that this incredible ceremony location is constantly changing, making each ice cave wedding completely unique.
After the ceremony, we stepped outside to capture portraits framed by the massive glacier entrance before continuing our journey deeper into South Iceland.
Highland Cliff Exploration
Leaving the glacier behind, we ventured into Iceland’s dramatic Highlands. Towering volcanic cliffs, winding glacial rivers, and endless black sand valleys created a landscape that felt untouched by time. Every overlook revealed another breathtaking panorama, encouraging us to stop frequently for unforgettable elopement portraits. Furthermore, one of the greatest benefits of planning a dynamic Iceland elopement is allowing time for exploration. Some of the day’s favorite images weren’t planned, they happened simply because we discovered incredible scenery along the way (IE, the way light changes).
Iceland Colorful Waterfall Wedding Photos
Next, no South Iceland wedding adventure would be complete without visiting one of Iceland’s spectacular waterfalls. For example, this one surrounded by vibrant moss-covered cliffs, the waterfall created a striking contrast against the earthy volcanic landscape. Additionally, the rich greens, warm autumn tones, and flowing white water produced some of the most colorful wedding portraits of the day.
As the afternoon sunlight illuminated the canyon, the couple paused to simply enjoy the view together, soaking in another unforgettable moment before heading toward Iceland’s famous coastline.
Each location throughout the day showcased a completely different side of Iceland’s incredible natural beauty.
Reynisfjall Mountain Champagne Toast
Meanwhile, as sunset approached, the newlyweds climbed above the dramatic coastline near Reynisfjall Mountain for a well-earned celebration. To illustrate, the couple shared a champagne toast and gluten free cupcakes while overlooking the famous black sand beach. Also with a view of the iconic sea stacks that stretch into the Atlantic Ocean. The golden evening light created the perfect atmosphere to reflect on everything they had experienced throughout the day. After hiking a glacier, exploring waterfalls, and wandering through remote landscapes, this peaceful coastal overlook offered the perfect opportunity to celebrate together. Sometimes the simplest moments become the most meaningful, especially during a dynamic elopement adventure!
Ending the Night with Northern Lights
Next, just when we thought the adventure had reached its perfect ending, Vik Iceland had one final surprise waiting… As darkness came in the illusive, Aurora Borealis began dancing overhead! The couple stepped into an open field, hand in hand, as the Northern Lights illuminated the night sky above them. There was no better finale to a day built around embracing Iceland’s unpredictable beauty! Note, ending an elopement beneath the Northern Lights is never something that can be guaranteed… But when nature cooperates, it creates memories that will last a lifetime!
