A Peaceful Start at Hotel Vík

Firstly, their adventure began before the sun had even made its appearance.  In fact, at Hotel Vík, Leo and Kimberlee settled into the morning as our professional hair and makeup team began getting them ready for the day ahead.  Secondly, our Iceland wedding photographer was there from the beginning, capturing all of those quiet in-between moments, the anticipation, the details, the final touches and the excitement of knowing that an extraordinary day was about to begin!  Thirdly, once they were ready, it was time to step outside, and begin their journey to their sunrise ice cave elopement adventure!

Sunrise Ice Cave Ceremony Like No Other!

After the soon to be newlyweds loaded into a Super Jeep and headed toward one Katla Glacier outlet.  Additionally, our fabulous super jeep driver dueled as the perfect storyteller sharing all of the need-to-know details of the area.  For example, from the folklore and geology surrounding the area.  Next, it was time for their unforgettable sunrise ice cave elopement ceremony to begin…  Leo and Kimberlee exchanged their vows on a natural bridge inside an ice cave, with a river flowing beneath them through the glacier.  How incredible, right?!

Meanwhile, surrounded by walls of glistening blue ice and the sound of glacial water rushing below, they stood together and professed their lifetime love for each other.  There were no rows of chairs or aisle, just the two of them, the glacier and the wild landscape of Iceland!  After exchanging rings, they also had a traditional hand fastening ceremony.  Afterwards, they sealed the incredible moment with a kiss!  Frankly, it was intimate, dramatic and wonderfully Icelandic!

Chasing Ice: Caves, Glacial Features & Elopement Portraits

Of course, the adventure didn’t end after the ceremony!  With their vows exchanged, Leo and Kimberlee set off to explore even more of the surrounding ice.  They ventured through two different ice caves, discovering constantly changing textures, colors and formations carved by nature.  Every turn offered something new for their Iceland elopement photographer to capture!  To illustrate, from brilliant blue ice, dramatic formations, rushing water and the couple navigating this incredible frozen landscape together.

Where the Mountains Meet the Sea

From the frozen glacier dynamics, the couple headed toward one of Iceland’s most dramatic landscapes, the coastlines!  Furthermore, the newlyweds next stop was a remote, desolate beach surrounded by magnificent basalt rock formations.  The raw contrasts created an entirely different atmosphere from their morning on the ice.  For instance, the beach gave Leo and Kimberlee room to slow down and explore.  Like walking among the rocks, taking in the enormous landscape around them and, of course, capturing some incredible Iceland elopement photographs too!  One of the best things about an Iceland elopement is exactly this kind of variety!  For example, in a single day, you can be at a glacier to a volcanic beach and feel like you’ve entered an entirely different world!

Adventure to a Hidden Waterfall

Next, the couple continued their journey to a beautiful waterfall located off  the beaten path.  Away from the crowds, the waterfall offered another intimate moment in the middle of their adventure.  Here, Leo and Kimberlee had another opportunity to explore together and enjoy the quieter side of South Iceland.

Exploring the Private Side of Dyrhólaey

Furthermore, their journey continued along Iceland’s spectacular southern coastline, eventually bringing them to the private side of Dyrhólaey Sea Arch Beach.  Dyrhólaey is one of South Iceland’s most recognizable coastal landmarks, but experiencing it away from the busiest viewpoints creates a completely different feeling!

360 Degrees of Iceland from Reynisfjall

And then it was time to go up.  The couple made their way to the top of Reynisfjall, where they were rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views across the surrounding landscape.  In fact, from this perspective, the scale of South Iceland really comes into focus… Likewise, the mountains, glaciers, coastline, black sand beaches and the open North Atlantic stretching toward the horizon.  After spending the day exploring throughout their sunrise ice cave elopement, Leo and Kimberlee got to experience their elopement from above!  Truly, the perfect place to pause, take it all in and appreciate just how much they had experienced since leaving Hotel Vík that morning.

Ending the Adventure at Berg

Lastly, following a full day of experiencing glaciers, running around beaches, waterfalls, sea arches and mountain views, there was only one thing left to do: relax!  Leo and Kimberlee returned to Hotel Vík and settled in for a cozy dinner at Berg Restaurant.  Their sunrise ice cave elopement had taken them through some of Iceland’s most spectacular landscapes…  But more importantly, it gave them a wedding day that was completely their own!  Ready for your own Iceland elopement adventure?  Your wedding day doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s!  In conclusion, if you’re dreaming of exchanging vows somewhere extraordinary feel free to contact us!

A Couples’ Photo Session… With a Secret Plan

First, Russell had arranged the day as a couples’ photo session, giving them the perfect excuse to spend a day exploring the Highlands together.  Second, the timing was especially beautiful.  To illustrate, November brings a completely different atmosphere to the Icelandic landscape.  The autumn colors are fading into winter, the mountains are beginning to wear their snowy coats, and the highland landscapes take on a wonderfully raw and quiet vibes.  As we traveled from the edge of the Highlands into the more dramatic landscapes, there were plenty of opportunities to stop, explore, and simply enjoy being together.  Meanwhile, Nikki had no idea that the day was about to become one of the biggest moments of their lives and our Iceland Wedding Planner team was so excited to capture it!

A November Highland Proposal

Eventually, Russell led Nikki to one of the incredible geological formations scattered throughout the highland landscape.  With the towering rock formation behind them and the vast Icelandic wilderness stretching out around them, Russell got down on one knee.  And she said yes!  Meanwhile, there is something particularly magical about proposing somewhere as wild and ancient as the Icelandic Highlands.  After all, the landscape doesn’t need much embellishment… Enormous mountains, volcanic rock, moss-covered earth, and endless open space create a backdrop that feels almost otherworldly!  Additionally, it was a November highland proposal that felt completely connected to the experience Russell had planned: An adventure they would remember forever!

Iceland Natural Cave Luxury Picnic

Next, the November highland proposal wasn’t the only surprise Russell had prepared…  In fact, after the excitement of the moment, we continued the adventure to a beautiful natural cave, where a private luxury picnic had been arranged for them.  For instance, surrounded by ancient rock and the textures of Iceland’s volcanic landscape, the cave created an intimate little world of its own.

The luxury picnic was designed as a celebration a chance for Russell and Nikki to slow down, enjoy something delicious together, and take in what had just happened.  But then came another incredibly thoughtful surprise.  Russell had created an Adventure Book filled with memories from their life together.  Rather than simply giving Nikki a beautiful engagement ring, he had found a way to celebrate the journey that had brought them to this moment!

Exploring the Highlands Together

Meanwhile, with the secret finally revealed and the engagement officially celebrated, the rest of the day became an opportunity for them to simply enjoy the Highlands together.  For example, we explored the rugged landscape, stopping along the way for photographs.  Further, from wide-open volcanic landscapes to dramatic mountains and geological formations, the Highlands gave us an incredible variety of scenery.  Additionally, because the day had originally been planned as a couples’ photography adventure, there was plenty of time to simply wander, laugh, hold hands, and enjoy being together!

Ending the Day at a Waterfall in Iceland

In conclusion, no Iceland adventure would be complete without a waterfall stop!  Especially after a November highland proposal!  Next, the final part of their highland adventure brought them to one of Iceland’s beautiful waterfalls.  Fun fact, it’s nicknamed “window waterfall” as you’ll see why below…  Fair to say, the photographs have a wonderful feeling of “we just got engaged!” happiness!  It was the perfect ending to an extraordinary day!!  Lastly, are you looking to craft your very own unique elopement in Iceland?  We’d love to hear from you!  Feel free to contact us for more information!

Vik Apartments Wedding

Late September is one of the most magical and rich in color times for a dynamic elopement in Iceland.  After all, the summer crowds have largely disappeared, while autumn begins painting the moss-covered lava fields with rich golden tones.  The days remain long enough for multiple adventures, yet the evenings become dark enough to offer the possibility of witnessing the Aurora Borealis.  On September 25th 2024, South Iceland gave us everything!

Bright sunshine illuminated the glacier ice, crisp mountain air made every stop refreshing, and the constantly changing Icelandic weather created dramatic skies that made every photograph unique and the wind making the couple look whimsical.  In fact, throughout the day, every destination looked completely different from the last, making the entire wedding feel like a journey across several worlds…

Every incredible wedding day begins with a comfortable place to get ready, and the Vík Apartments provided the perfect starting point.  Located in our fabulous coastal town of Vík, the apartments offer modern accommodations with spectacular mountain views while placing couples just minutes away from many of South Iceland’s most iconic locations.  The relaxed atmosphere allowed the couple to enjoy a peaceful morning before stepping into one of the most adventurous wedding days imaginable.  Plus if you have food allergies or Celiac Disease, it gives you tools to cook your own food safely.  After getting ready together and with go bags in hand, the pair loaded into the super jeep to begin their dynamic elopement adventure!

Dynamic Elopement Ceremony

One of the greatest advantages of planning a dynamic elopement is the freedom to let the day evolve naturally.  To illustrate, instead of rushing from location to location, we designed a timeline that allowed the couple to fully experience each destination.  Their ceremony wasn’t simply about exchanging vows, it became part of an adventure.

Every stop added another chapter to their story:

• Quiet moments together before the ceremony
• A breathtaking vow exchange deep inside an ancient glacier
• Remote Highland exploration
• Waterfall portraits
• Coastal celebrations overlooking the North Atlantic
• A surprise Northern Lights finale

Rather than spending the day inside a traditional venue, they experienced Iceland itself as their wedding venue.  And what couple wouldn’t want that?!

Eloping in an Ice Cave

One of the most unforgettable moments of the day took place inside a stunning natural ice cave.

Surrounded by glowing blue glacier walls sculpted by centuries of moving ice, the couple exchanged their vows in complete privacy. The translucent ice reflected soft natural light throughout the cave, creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Standing together inside the glacier felt almost surreal. Every curve of the frozen walls reminded us that this incredible ceremony location is constantly changing, making each ice cave wedding completely unique.

After the ceremony, we stepped outside to capture portraits framed by the massive glacier entrance before continuing our journey deeper into South Iceland.

Highland Cliff Exploration

Leaving the glacier behind, we ventured into Iceland’s dramatic Highlands.  Towering volcanic cliffs, winding glacial rivers, and endless black sand valleys created a landscape that felt untouched by time.  Every overlook revealed another breathtaking panorama, encouraging us to stop frequently for unforgettable elopement portraits.  Furthermore, one of the greatest benefits of planning a dynamic Iceland elopement is allowing time for exploration.  Some of the day’s favorite images weren’t planned, they happened simply because we discovered incredible scenery along the way (IE, the way light changes).

Iceland Colorful Waterfall Wedding Photos

Next, no South Iceland wedding adventure would be complete without visiting one of Iceland’s spectacular waterfalls.  For example, this one surrounded by vibrant moss-covered cliffs, the waterfall created a striking contrast against the earthy volcanic landscape.  Additionally, the rich greens, warm autumn tones, and flowing white water produced some of the most colorful wedding portraits of the day.

As the afternoon sunlight illuminated the canyon, the couple paused to simply enjoy the view together, soaking in another unforgettable moment before heading toward Iceland’s famous coastline.

Each location throughout the day showcased a completely different side of Iceland’s incredible natural beauty.

Reynisfjall Mountain Champagne Toast

Meanwhile, as sunset approached, the newlyweds climbed above the dramatic coastline near Reynisfjall Mountain for a well-earned celebration.   To illustrate, the couple shared a champagne toast and gluten free cupcakes while overlooking the famous black sand beach.  Also with a view of the iconic sea stacks that stretch into the Atlantic Ocean.  The golden evening light created the perfect atmosphere to reflect on everything they had experienced throughout the day.  After hiking a glacier, exploring waterfalls, and wandering through remote landscapes, this peaceful coastal overlook offered the perfect opportunity to celebrate together.  Sometimes the simplest moments become the most meaningful, especially during a dynamic elopement adventure!

Ending the Night with Northern Lights

Next, just when we thought the adventure had reached its perfect ending, Vik Iceland had one final surprise waiting…  As darkness came in the illusive, Aurora Borealis began dancing overhead!  The couple stepped into an open field, hand in hand, as the Northern Lights illuminated the night sky above them.  There was no better finale to a day built around embracing Iceland’s unpredictable beauty!  Note, ending an elopement beneath the Northern Lights is never something that can be guaranteed… But when nature cooperates, it creates memories that will last a lifetime!  Lastly, are you ready to venture down the road of planning your very own dynamic elopement adventure or wedding with guests?  Feel free to contact us for more information!

Quick Guide: Hatta Mountain Hike

This guide covers everything you need to know before hiking Hatta… For Example, difficulty, trail conditions, parking, what to wear, and exactly what to expect along the way.

Note:  Trail statistics vary slightly depending on tracking source and exact turnaround point.  Also take create care of the landscape by leaving no trace behind you!

Step 1: Start Behind Vík Church

One of my favorite things about the Hatta mountain hike is how accessible it is!  The trail starts directly behind the iconic red-roof church in Vík.  You can park near the church and immediately begin walking toward the mountain.  Note: The church would appreciate a donation for parking but it is not mandatory.  First, standing at the start, it almost doesn’t look like there’s a trail at all.  But if you look closely, you’ll spot the path cutting upward across the grassy hillside.

Second, the first section is surprisingly relaxed.  You’ll walk through wide open grasslands with the mountain rising in front of you.  Now, this lower portion gives you time to settle into the hike before the climbing begins.  Third, even here, if you turn around, you already start getting beautiful views over Vík and the ocean.  One thing we noticed immediately was how quiet it felt.  Compared to most South Coast stops, there absolutely no people!  Likewise, I can vouch for this because I built my #vikdreamhouse just below and we barely see anyone on nice days!

Step 2: Gain Elevation and Look Back Often

This is where the reward starts early on the Hatta mountain hike… To illustrate, ss the trail climbs, the village below becomes smaller and smaller.

You begin to see:

Reynisdrangar sea stacks

Vík’s black sand beach

The dramatic cliffs surrounding town

The curve of Iceland’s South Coast

This section is moderately steep but never technical and can be pretty slippery if muddy.  Just pace yourself, wear proper hiking boots, bring hiking poles, and stop for photos!

Step 3: Reach the Open Plateau

After the initial climb the landscape completely changes.  For example, the trail opens into broad mossy terrain with rocky formations scattered around.  Besides the wind, this part felt unexpectedly peaceful.  Meanwhile, you’ll pass a few more trail markers and begin moving toward Hatta’s upper and final slopes.  This was also where the wind became more noticeable for us, so layers definitely help.

Step 4: The Final Climb to the Summit

The final push on the Hatta mountain hike, is where the trek earns its difficult rating (here and parts of the beginning).  For instance, the trail becomes rockier and steeper.  Further, depending on season, expect patches of snow, mud, or loose footing with moving rocks.  All that being said, please take care and take your time.  After all, this isn’t a race.  And every time you stop to catch your breath, you get another ridiculous view in any direction!

Step 5: Reach the Summit of Hatta (Mountain Overlooking Vik)

Next, at the summit you get something that surprised us: Views in every single direction!  Likely literally and figuratively 360 degree picturesque views!  To illustrate, one side opens toward the ocean and Vík.  The other reveals rolling mountains, glacial, and volcanic landscapes stretching into the highlands.  Fun Fact: There’s even a summit marker at the top marking your achievement on conquering the Hatta mountain hike in Vik!  Now for some, this is the kind of place where you don’t stay for five minutes.  You sit down, layer up, you stay awhile.  Stay a while we did because our Iceland Wedding Planner team hauled up champagne and charcuterie!  Because who does not want to turn a regular “hike” into an unforgettable moment?!?

Is Hatta Worth Hiking?

Heck yes, absolutely!  Furthermore, if you’re staying overnight in Vík, this is one of the highest reward-to-effort hikes in South Iceland.  Couple of important points…

1- You don’t need special equipment in summer.

2- You don’t need a guide.

3-  It still feels like a hidden local spot compared to Iceland’s more famous trails.

What to Bring

Waterproof hiking boots

Wind / Rain Proof Jacket

Water

Extra layer for summit breaks

Gloves outside summer

Camera (you’ll use it)

Cassandra & Torin

Oh la la, these two!  Absolute soul mates!!  From the connection they share, the way they look at each other, support, and inspire, they have it all!  Their history goes as far back as high school Spanish class in California to getting married on their actual 10-year anniversary of being together!  Although, on thing they didn’t exactly plan for was holding a glacier flood waterfall wedding!  However, that is where our Iceland Wedding Planner team assured them it would be EPIC and they would be FIRST wed literally on newly created Icelandic landscapes!

September 19^th 2024 Wedding in Iceland

Fall in Iceland is colorful believe it or not!  Our small bushes and ground cover turn into a lovely autumn scenes.  But weather in Iceland can be 50-50 during this season so really you need to embrace all conditions if choosing September or October.  The start to Cassandra and Torin’s glacier flood waterfall wedding adventure begins at Frost & Fire Guesthouse.

Which is actually a dreamy boutique hotel that sits within a geothermal valley.  In fact, it is a place that cooks the bread and eggs they serve in a hot pot outside!  Talk about a earthy connecting hotel experience in Iceland, right?  Truly a perfect setting for the soon to be newlyweds to relax and get ready for their adventure wedding in Iceland.  Shortly after sunrise the group grabbed their “go bags” and loaded into the super jeep for the exciting journey!

Glacier Flood Waterfall Wedding Ceremony

Now you might be wondering if why we have named today’s Iceland Wedding Planner post, “glacier flood waterfall wedding” right?  Well, I’m so glad you asked!  First, let’s talk about what it means… The event happens when a glacier has a volcano underneath it so when the core heats up it can send down a ginormous amount of melt water.  Second, it pushes out to the closest and least resistant place.  Third, in this case, we are talking about Iceland’s fourth largest glacier named, Mýrdalsjökull which has Katla Volcano underneath it.

Typically the melt water will come down 3 flood areas being out through Entujökull, Sólheimajökull, and Kötlujökull.  However in a series of events that happened in Summer of 2024, the melt water pushed out through a glacier outlet called Sandfellsjökull.  So what does that mean?  Which basically implies something is changing in the caldera of Katla.  Meanwhile, this event sent down enough water to destroy part of Route 1 and keep it closed for about 1.5 days.

Now this event made Cassandra and Torin ceremony into a glacier outburst flood wedding because the flood actually went right through the falls and not only brought down a massive amount of water but also deposited glacier clay and sand.  But what could be more exciting than experiencing a newly created landscape on your wedding day?!  The pair held an intimate ceremony in front of the newly updated waterfall and it was stunning!  Following the ceremony the Iceland wedding group delighted in a champagne toast with lots of treats!

Romantic September Iceland Wedding Portraits

After their glacier flood waterfall wedding ceremony and family photos were complete, the newlyweds enjoyed time together exploring the area.  To illustrate, they had obviously seen photos of how the waterfall was before the flood.  But they were appreciative they were the first couple to experience this special place at it’s rawest.

Exploring Vik Iceland Clifftops

Furthermore, when you think of what a glacier flood waterfall wedding adventure might be like, you might likely think a day full on contrasts right?  You’re absolutely right!  Next on Cassandra and Torin’s agenda is taking a journey up to Reynisfjall mountain top for not only 360 degree views, but also iconic landscapes!  Our Iceland Wedding Planner local photographer took great care in shooting from both the ground and the drone.

Geothermal Heat Experience

Winding down the adventure portion of the day led the Iceland wedding group to an offbeat geothermal area they got to experience first hand.  How unique yet romantic to discover such a otherworldly place!

Frost & Fire Guesthouse Reception

Once the glacier flood waterfall wedding group returned to Frost and Fire Guesthouse, they were able to take 1-1,5 hours to relax, use the hot tub, etc!  Around 8pm or do they gathered again to enjoy in a delicious dinner.  Upon arriving to the restaurant,  everyone was immersed back into nature from the inside out!  For instance, from the mss and florals on the table to the elements suspended above, the group was wow’d!  Additionally, there was a pretty little cake table too!    All of their guests raved over how amazing the home grown their 5 course meal tasted.  Lastly, the pair cut their fabulous wedding cake!

Surprise Northern Lights

Is there anything better than ending a fall glacier flood wedding with Northern Lights?!  For Cassandra and Torin, definitely nothing better, that’s for sure!!  Hopefully today you are leaving with the feeling of being inspired to plan your own… Feel free to contact our Iceland Wedding Planner team for more information!

Why Is the Sand Black?

One of the most memorable features you see when you visit Iceland is the black sand beaches… And a big part of what makes a Foggy Summer Proposal here so unique, is the black sand!  After all, you’ll see that the basalt stacks are fogged throughout the session but somehow it still screamed EPIC!  Iceland’s black sand beaches are formed from volcanic activity.  To illustrate, this happens when molten lava flows into the ocean, it cools rapidly and shatters into tiny fragments.  Next, over time, the waves grind these fragments into fine, dark sand.  Which then  gives the result is shoreline that is constantly shaped by the powerful forces of nature.

Furthermore, at Víkurfjara, the black sand stretches wide and uninterrupted, creating a dramatic setting.  Furthermore, in foggy conditions, the muted tones of the landscape become even more pronounced, allowing the emotions of the moment to take center stage.  Which is exactly what happened in this foggy summer proposal!

The History and Landscape of Reynisfjall

Reynisfjall mountain towers high above the town and Víkurfjara Beach which absolutely adds another layer of depth to the experience of their foggy summer proposal…  Furthermore, this basalt sea cliff was formed by volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago, and its distinctive columnar rock formations are a true testament to Iceland’s geological history.  Additionally, local folklore also adds a touch of mystery to the area.  Want to know more, checkout: Eerie Iceland!  The nearby sea stacks are said to be trolls who were turned to stone when caught in the sunlight. Whether you believe the legends or not, there’s no denying the sense of wonder that this landscape inspires.

Iceland Offbeat Gem: Víkurfjara Beach

For this monumental moment, Veeral chose Víkurfjara…  Which is the quieter and less-traveled side of Reynisfjall Mountain.  For instance, while many visitors flock to the more well-known beaches nearby, Víkurfjara offers a sense of privacy that is often rare in Iceland, especially during Summer.  Meanwhile, it’s the kind of place where you can hear your own footsteps in the sand and feel like the entire coastline belongs just to you!  Especially if you find you way there before sunrise…

On the day of the proposal, a soft fog rolled in from the Atlantic, which wrapped around the towering sea stacks and cliffs in a dreamlike haze.  Additionally, the visibility shifted constantly, revealing and concealing the landscape in a way that felt almost cinematic… Wild, right?  But I will say, it was the perfect backdrop for a Foggy Summer Proposal!  Aka, romantic, moody, and unforgettable!!

The Iceland Proposal Moment!

Veeral and Cara walked along the shoreline, taking in the quiet beauty of the beach.  But little did Cara know that our Vik Wedding Photographer was lurking around!  So as the waves lapped softly against the black sand, and seabirds circled overhead, Veeral dropped to one knee!

Cara’s reaction said everything… Total surprise, joy, and emotion all at once!  The fog seemed to pause with them, creating a stillness that made the moment feel suspended in time.  For example, it was simple, heartfelt, and deeply personal.  After she said yes, the couple embraced, laughing and soaking in the moment.  Later, Veeral lifted Cara into the air as they celebrated, the ocean behind them and the mist swirling around. It was pure joy, perfectly framed by Iceland’s wild beauty…

Iceland Engagement Ring Details

Next, one of the most meaningful elements of a proposal is the ring itself.  We captured it resting on a piece of volcanic rocks, all surrounded by textured black sand and other weathered rocks.  How beautiful is the contrast between the delicate sparkle of the ring and the rugged environment symbolized something powerful?!  Love thrives in even the most dramatic landscapes.

Why Choose a Foggy Summer Proposal?

Many couples initially hope for clear skies and sunshine.  However, we dare you to be different!  A stormy weather day or fog can create something even more special.  To illustrate, a Foggy Summer Proposal offers:

• Privacy: Fog naturally limits visibility, making even popular areas feel secluded.
• Atmosphere: The soft, diffused light creates a romantic and cinematic mood.
• Uniqueness: No two foggy days are ever the same, ensuring your proposal is truly one-of-a-kind.
• Focus on Emotion: With fewer visual distractions, the connection between you and your partner becomes the centerpiece.

Veeral and Cara’s proposal is a perfect example of how embracing Iceland’s ever-changing weather can lead to something extraordinary!

Planning Your Own Proposal in Vík

If you’re craving of your own Foggy Summer Proposal, Vík is one of the most incredible places to consider.  In fact, choosing a quieter location like Víkurfjara allows for a more intimate experience while still offering the dramatic scenery Iceland is known for.   Timing, weather flexibility, and thoughtful planning all play a role in creating a seamless proposal.  However, sometimes, the most beautiful moments come from simply embracing what nature gives you, just like Veeral and Cara did.

In the end, what made this day so special wasn’t just the location or the weather, it was the connection between two people choosing each other.  A Foggy Summer Proposal on the black sands of Vík is more than just a beautiful setting… It’s truly an experience that stays with you, shaped by the wind, the sea, and the quiet magic of Iceland.  Veeral and Cara’s story is a reminder that sometimes the most unforgettable moments happen when everything feels a little wild, a little uncertain, and completely real!  Contact us for more information!

The History of Thorrablot (Þorrablót)

Thorrablot (or in Iceland: Þorrablót) takes place during the month of Þorri in the old Norse calendar.  To illustrate, it is typically from late January through February.  Historically, this period marked the heart of winter, when survival depended on careful preservation of food and strong social bonds.

Meanwhile, the festival’s name refers to ancient midwinter sacrifices or feasts believed to honor Þorri.  Who is he?  He was a mythological figure associated with winter.  While the exact pagan rituals faded after Iceland’s Christianization, the spirit of gathering to share food and stories endured time.  Furthermore, in the 19th century, during a period of growing national identity, Icelanders revived Thorrablot as a cultural celebration.  Additionally, today, communities, families, and organizations host festive yearly gatherings that blend historical homage with modern fun.  To illustrate, this often featuring speeches, songs, skits and all kinds of other playful humor.

What Happens at a Thorrablot Celebration?

First, a typical Thorrablot is lively and communal.  Second, there is usually a committee made up of local village people (both couples and singles) which works on the plan the entire year.  Third, a theme that is chosen.  For example, the year my husband and I served (2025 in Vik) we had the theme “Old Iceland / Old Vik.”  Decorations follow suit, the committee dresses to represent, and usually the tickets and any media (like a 2-3 issues of newspapers called “The Half-wit” follow).

Next, upon arrival guests are greeted by the committee members, pieces of fermented shark, shots of Brennivin and non-alcoholic sparkling.  Guests gather around long tables, in small towns bring their own alcohol and mingle until the hosts introduce the event.  Additionally, at this point everyone lines up to enjoy the traditional foods which I’ll detail out below.  Afterwards, it is time for lots of singing and the main event, the show!  For instance, in my town of Vik in South Iceland, the committee pre-record skits making fun of things that happened throughout the year or poking fun at some people in the town.  Following the event turns into a dance that is a mix of Icelandic folk dancing and modern.

Regardless of the town, the common elements in Thorrablot are enjoying traditional foods, listen to speeches or storytelling (sometimes comedic or satirical), sing together, celebrating Icelandic heritage.  Overall, the atmosphere is warm and festive  and an absolute reminder that winter is easier when shared!

Traditional Thorrablot Food

Food is at the heart of Thorrablot!  In fact, it is a time of reflecting how Icelanders historically preserved ingredients to last through long winters.  The selection, often called “Þorramatur,” showcases methods like curing, fermenting, smoking, and pickling.

Some well-known dishes include:

• Hákarl (fermented shark) — Perhaps the most famous (and notorious), known for its strong aroma and deep historical roots.
• Hangikjöt (smoked lamb) — A beloved staple with a rich, smoky flavor.
• Svið (singed sheep’s head) — Prepared traditionally and served in slices.
• Lifrarpylsa and blóðmör (liver and blood sausages) — Rustic, hearty foods tied to farm life.
• Rúgbrauð (dense rye bread) — Slightly sweet and often baked using geothermal heat.
• Pickled ram’s testicles — A historic delicacy reflecting nose-to-tail preservation practices.

These foods tell the story of ingenuity in a harsh environment, where nothing went to waste.  Today, many gatherings balance traditional items with more familiar dishes, allowing guests to experience heritage at their comfort level.

The Cultural Meaning Behind the Festival

Rainy Iceland Marriage Ceremony

There’s something uber romantic about exchanging vows in the rain.  In fact, remember it’s good luck to play in the rain on your wedding day…  For instance, most say it means you’ll easily have 50+ years together!  Meanwhile, Iceland’s ever-changing skies and wild weather always kept us on our toes.  But the moody atmosphere creates the perfect backdrop for an intimate rainy Iceland marriage ceremony.  Lisa and Andrew, hiked to this gorgeous basalt waterfall and stood among the rugged formations.  While,  no décor needed, just nature displaying its own drama is absolutely enough!

One of the many things our Iceland Wedding Planner team really tries to convey to all of our couples is that rain isn’t a setback, it’s part of the story!  To illustrate, it deepens colors, adds texture, and brings a cinematic mood to every frame.  Also, how fabulous that the bride’s black wedding dress contrasted beautifully against the green and the mist flowing off of waterfall ?!  Likely the entire combination created a dreamy atmosphere.  Our local Iceland elopement photographer took romantic rainy wedding photos in Iceland that felt like they were pulled straight from an adventure film!

Chasing Basalt Waterfalls

After the ceremony, the real fun begins… Because who doesn’t want to chase waterfalls, specifically, basalt waterfalls?   For example, they are some of the most unique geological features in Iceland.  Their dramatic hexagonal formations and towering canyon walls add depth and character to every Iceland wedding photo.  As they hike deeper into the area, stop revealed a new incredible scene carved by volcanic activity over thousands of years.  And for eloping couples who want something wildly different, a basalt waterfall location checks every box.  Am I right?

Iceland Basalt Waterfall Canyon Wedding Photos

Intimate September Waterfall Elopement

September is one of the best months for adventure focused couples in Iceland.  Cooler temperatures, quieter locations, and rich green landscapes create the perfect environment for an intimate September waterfall elopement.  However, the shifting autumn light brought out warm earthy tones in the moss, rock, and black sand.  All while the mist added that extra dose of Icelandic moodiness that Iceland wedding photographers adore!

Exploring Dverghamrar

What South Iceland adventure would be complete without exploring nearby hidden gems, including Dverghamrar?   This spot is a fascinating cluster of basalt column cliffs filled with folklore and  geological natural patterns.  It was the perfect and final stop of the couples basalt waterfall wedding day adventure.  The pair walked hand in hand and savored their last moments in their wedding attire… What a fantastic yet beautiful end!

Getting Ready & First Look

First, September 8th 2024 started out relaxed and rainy.  Second, Jazmin and Travis decided to ready together in their fabulous floor to ceiling window hotel room.  Third, out local Iceland  elopement photographer documented all of their beautiful details.  Fourth, the pair met for a first look, which wasn’t in front of crowds, it was intimate.  No noise.  Just the two of them sharing a moment before heading out for the days adventure!

Personal Vows and Wows!

Next, the soon to be newlyweds chose to head into the Icelandic Highlands for a thrilling ride.  After, they exchanged vows in a quiet spot in front of a stunning mountain waterfall.  For instance, no arch, no chairs, no sound system.  Just the presence of our Pastor and words they wrote for each other in personal vows.  They laughed, smiled, and embraced.  Meanwhile, the moment felt real and unfiltered, which fit their Iceland September Elopement perfectly!

Mars Like Landscape Wedding Location

From there, our couple and Iceland Wedding Planner team drove deeper into the highlands.  And the landscape changed fast to something other worldly!  Also, no people, no buildings.  Just wide land and shifting colors.  Jazmin and Travis walked together, stopping often, taking it in.  It seriously felt like another planet, and for a while, it felt like they were the ones to first discover it!  How epic, right?!

Interior of Iceland Wedding Photos

We stepped inside an old structure used by travelers long ago. The walls told their own story. Light came in through small openings, creating quiet shadows. These interior wedding photos added contrast to their day and grounded their Iceland September Elopement in Iceland’s history.

Iceland September Elopement

September in Iceland gave them space for their pre and post wedding self drive adventures too!  Fewer people.  Softer light.  Also potential Northern Lights!  Weather that changed but never stopped the day.  Their Iceland September Elopement was about adventure and choosing locations without crowds.  Maybe along the way they spotted a troll or two.

Iceland Wedding Photos Inside a Natural Cave

Furthermore, one of the most private moments happened inside a natural cave in the highlands.  For example, the sound shifts, the temperature drops.   Jazmin and Travis stood close, hands linked, experiencing Icelandic history before heading back out.  These wedding photos felt raw and honest, just like the rest of the day, truly!

Super Jeep Driving Through Unbridged Rivers

To reach the final locations, we crossed tons of rivers with no bridges.  Which is why a super jeep is required to get safely through the highlands.  To illustrate, water pushed against the tires adding to the excitement!  This part of their Iceland September Elopement was one of the most daring!

Sunset Beach Vibes and Icelandic Shots!

Lastly, the pair ended the day on a magnificent coastline.  In fact, the sun sat low, light kept changing.  Meanwhile, the beach stretched on with no one else around and the wind picked up.  Jazmin and Travis walked along the shoreline savoring the last bits of their adventurous elopement.  Likely the quiet yet intimate ending their elopement deserved!

If you’re dreaming of an Iceland September Elopement that’s focused on exploration, privacy, and once in a lifetime moments, Jazmin and Travis’ day shows what’s possible when you let Iceland lead the way.  Contact us for more information!
