Why Is the Sand Black?

One of the most memorable features you see when you visit Iceland is the black sand beaches… And a big part of what makes a Foggy Summer Proposal here so unique, is the black sand!  After all, you’ll see that the basalt stacks are fogged throughout the session but somehow it still screamed EPIC!  Iceland’s black sand beaches are formed from volcanic activity.  To illustrate, this happens when molten lava flows into the ocean, it cools rapidly and shatters into tiny fragments.  Next, over time, the waves grind these fragments into fine, dark sand.  Which then  gives the result is shoreline that is constantly shaped by the powerful forces of nature.

Furthermore, at Víkurfjara, the black sand stretches wide and uninterrupted, creating a dramatic setting.  Furthermore, in foggy conditions, the muted tones of the landscape become even more pronounced, allowing the emotions of the moment to take center stage.  Which is exactly what happened in this foggy summer proposal!

The History and Landscape of Reynisfjall

Reynisfjall mountain towers high above the town and Víkurfjara Beach which absolutely adds another layer of depth to the experience of their foggy summer proposal…  Furthermore, this basalt sea cliff was formed by volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago, and its distinctive columnar rock formations are a true testament to Iceland’s geological history.  Additionally, local folklore also adds a touch of mystery to the area.  Want to know more, checkout: Eerie Iceland!  The nearby sea stacks are said to be trolls who were turned to stone when caught in the sunlight. Whether you believe the legends or not, there’s no denying the sense of wonder that this landscape inspires.

Iceland Offbeat Gem: Víkurfjara Beach

For this monumental moment, Veeral chose Víkurfjara…  Which is the quieter and less-traveled side of Reynisfjall Mountain.  For instance, while many visitors flock to the more well-known beaches nearby, Víkurfjara offers a sense of privacy that is often rare in Iceland, especially during Summer.  Meanwhile, it’s the kind of place where you can hear your own footsteps in the sand and feel like the entire coastline belongs just to you!  Especially if you find you way there before sunrise…

On the day of the proposal, a soft fog rolled in from the Atlantic, which wrapped around the towering sea stacks and cliffs in a dreamlike haze.  Additionally, the visibility shifted constantly, revealing and concealing the landscape in a way that felt almost cinematic… Wild, right?  But I will say, it was the perfect backdrop for a Foggy Summer Proposal!  Aka, romantic, moody, and unforgettable!!

The Iceland Proposal Moment!

Veeral and Cara walked along the shoreline, taking in the quiet beauty of the beach.  But little did Cara know that our Vik Wedding Photographer was lurking around!  So as the waves lapped softly against the black sand, and seabirds circled overhead, Veeral dropped to one knee!

Cara’s reaction said everything… Total surprise, joy, and emotion all at once!  The fog seemed to pause with them, creating a stillness that made the moment feel suspended in time.  For example, it was simple, heartfelt, and deeply personal.  After she said yes, the couple embraced, laughing and soaking in the moment.  Later, Veeral lifted Cara into the air as they celebrated, the ocean behind them and the mist swirling around. It was pure joy, perfectly framed by Iceland’s wild beauty…

The History of Thorrablot (Þorrablót)

Thorrablot (or in Iceland: Þorrablót) takes place during the month of Þorri in the old Norse calendar.  To illustrate, it is typically from late January through February.  Historically, this period marked the heart of winter, when survival depended on careful preservation of food and strong social bonds.

Meanwhile, the festival’s name refers to ancient midwinter sacrifices or feasts believed to honor Þorri.  Who is he?  He was a mythological figure associated with winter.  While the exact pagan rituals faded after Iceland’s Christianization, the spirit of gathering to share food and stories endured time.  Furthermore, in the 19th century, during a period of growing national identity, Icelanders revived Thorrablot as a cultural celebration.  Additionally, today, communities, families, and organizations host festive yearly gatherings that blend historical homage with modern fun.  To illustrate, this often featuring speeches, songs, skits and all kinds of other playful humor.

What Happens at a Thorrablot Celebration?

First, a typical Thorrablot is lively and communal.  Second, there is usually a committee made up of local village people (both couples and singles) which works on the plan the entire year.  Third, a theme that is chosen.  For example, the year my husband and I served (2025 in Vik) we had the theme “Old Iceland / Old Vik.”  Decorations follow suit, the committee dresses to represent, and usually the tickets and any media (like a 2-3 issues of newspapers called “The Half-wit” follow).

Next, upon arrival guests are greeted by the committee members, pieces of fermented shark, shots of Brennivin and non-alcoholic sparkling.  Guests gather around long tables, in small towns bring their own alcohol and mingle until the hosts introduce the event.  Additionally, at this point everyone lines up to enjoy the traditional foods which I’ll detail out below.  Afterwards, it is time for lots of singing and the main event, the show!  For instance, in my town of Vik in South Iceland, the committee pre-record skits making fun of things that happened throughout the year or poking fun at some people in the town.  Following the event turns into a dance that is a mix of Icelandic folk dancing and modern.

Regardless of the town, the common elements in Thorrablot are enjoying traditional foods, listen to speeches or storytelling (sometimes comedic or satirical), sing together, celebrating Icelandic heritage.  Overall, the atmosphere is warm and festive  and an absolute reminder that winter is easier when shared!

Traditional Thorrablot Food

Food is at the heart of Thorrablot!  In fact, it is a time of reflecting how Icelanders historically preserved ingredients to last through long winters.  The selection, often called “Þorramatur,” showcases methods like curing, fermenting, smoking, and pickling.

Some well-known dishes include:

• Hákarl (fermented shark) — Perhaps the most famous (and notorious), known for its strong aroma and deep historical roots.
• Hangikjöt (smoked lamb) — A beloved staple with a rich, smoky flavor.
• Svið (singed sheep’s head) — Prepared traditionally and served in slices.
• Lifrarpylsa and blóðmör (liver and blood sausages) — Rustic, hearty foods tied to farm life.
• Rúgbrauð (dense rye bread) — Slightly sweet and often baked using geothermal heat.
• Pickled ram’s testicles — A historic delicacy reflecting nose-to-tail preservation practices.

These foods tell the story of ingenuity in a harsh environment, where nothing went to waste.  Today, many gatherings balance traditional items with more familiar dishes, allowing guests to experience heritage at their comfort level.

The Cultural Meaning Behind the Festival

In conclusion, beyond the menu, Thorrablot represents continuity.  Truly, a way of honoring ancestors and remembering how communities thrived despite isolation and extreme weather.  To reiterate, we must not forget, to have respect for tradition, gratitude for shared resources, humor in the face of hardship and pride in Icelandic identity!

Rainy Iceland Marriage Ceremony

There’s something uber romantic about exchanging vows in the rain.  In fact, remember it’s good luck to play in the rain on your wedding day…  For instance, most say it means you’ll easily have 50+ years together!  Meanwhile, Iceland’s ever-changing skies and wild weather always kept us on our toes.  But the moody atmosphere creates the perfect backdrop for an intimate rainy Iceland marriage ceremony.  Lisa and Andrew, hiked to this gorgeous basalt waterfall and stood among the rugged formations.  While,  no décor needed, just nature displaying its own drama is absolutely enough!

Getting Ready & First Look

First, September 8th 2024 started out relaxed and rainy.  Second, Jazmin and Travis decided to ready together in their fabulous floor to ceiling window hotel room.  Third, out local Iceland  elopement photographer documented all of their beautiful details.  Fourth, the pair met for a first look, which wasn’t in front of crowds, it was intimate.  No noise.  Just the two of them sharing a moment before heading out for the days adventure!

Personal Vows and Wows!

Next, the soon to be newlyweds chose to head into the Icelandic Highlands for a thrilling ride.  After, they exchanged vows in a quiet spot in front of a stunning mountain waterfall.  For instance, no arch, no chairs, no sound system.  Just the presence of our Pastor and words they wrote for each other in personal vows.  They laughed, smiled, and embraced.  Meanwhile, the moment felt real and unfiltered, which fit their Iceland September Elopement perfectly!

Mars Like Landscape Wedding Location

From there, our couple and Iceland Wedding Planner team drove deeper into the highlands.  And the landscape changed fast to something other worldly!  Also, no people, no buildings.  Just wide land and shifting colors.  Jazmin and Travis walked together, stopping often, taking it in.  It seriously felt like another planet, and for a while, it felt like they were the ones to first discover it!  How epic, right?!

We stepped inside an old structure used by travelers long ago. The walls told their own story. Light came in through small openings, creating quiet shadows. These interior wedding photos added contrast to their day and grounded their Iceland September Elopement in Iceland’s history.

To reach the final locations, we crossed tons of rivers with no bridges.  Which is why a super jeep is required to get safely through the highlands.  To illustrate, water pushed against the tires adding to the excitement!  This part of their Iceland September Elopement was one of the most daring!

Lastly, the pair ended the day on a magnificent coastline.  In fact, the sun sat low, light kept changing.  Meanwhile, the beach stretched on with no one else around and the wind picked up.  Jazmin and Travis walked along the shoreline savoring the last bits of their adventurous elopement.  Likely the quiet yet intimate ending their elopement deserved!

Ryan and Helen were on an epic Iceland self drive journey and new Vik was a iconic looking town full of charm.  So why not find the local Iceland wedding photographer who lives in Vik to make their wish happen?!  Heck yes!  After all, Vik is a waypoint for the South and way to picturesque to pass up!  First, the session begins with a short hike to the top of the hill that overlooks the town.  Second, that very early morning start provided us with the dreamiest light!  Third, we even were photobombed by our neighbors super sweet kitty making it even more fun! The morning of July 30th 2024, began with quiet ease between Daphne and Ben in their suite at Hotel Stracta.  However they did part ways as the beautiful bride began getting ready.  Next, our Iceland wedding photographer began photographing all of their lovely details.  For example, the brides dress and groom details were all thoroughly documented to begin the start of the story’s day.  The pair had around 10 guests join them on their highland waterfall wedding adventure.  Before loading into the super jeep for the day all the guests had their go bags ready in hand and posed for a quick photo!

Iceland Symbolic Wedding Ceremony Among the Highlands

How exciting the couple gifted their loved ones with a thrilling journey into the interior of Iceland!  Since the couple had previously had marriage paperwork completed, they chose to hold a symbolic wedding ceremony in Iceland.   At this secluded waterfall deep in the highlands, the pair thoughtfully said their personal vows to each other.   Fair to say the sound of cascading water created an inspiring soundtrack to their highland waterfall wedding.  Truly, no need for a traditional altar here as Iceland’s wilderness provided a setting more breathtaking than any venue could offer!  Next, following the ceremony the group toasted with bubbles to the newlyweds new chapter!

Once they finished their glasses of bubbles it was time to discover the private property waterfall more intimately.  Together hand in hand, Daphne and Ben savored every second of it’s beauty! Pretty sure the sheep nearby watching them from the cliffs loved watching them explore too!!

Exploring a “Hawaii-Like” Canyon

Meanwhile, did you know that there are several places in Iceland that give off Hawaii or Kauai vibes?  To illustrate, the next location on their Iceland wedding itinerary is definitely classified as one of them!  Here Daphne and Ben explored a picturesque canyon often compared to something out of Hawaii. Why you might wonder?  Well!  Lush green meets steep cliffs, and a stunning river flowing through lava rock!

Though Iceland and Hawaii seem worlds apart, this Hawaii-like canyon exploration proved that Iceland can surprise you with tropical-feeling beauty in its highlands.  Especially during Summer weather in Iceland!

Next on their highland waterfall wedding schedule, our team planned a  lunch at a natural cave.  Packed lunches fit the schedule best alongside some Icelandic coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts.  Additionally, the group took time to discover the geological rich area!  The group left in two different super jeeps as the guests returned to the hotel while the couple continued on for more highland adventures… Perfect balance!

No Iceland highland wedding adventure would be complete without a bit of hiking!  Daphne and Ben couple spent part of the afternoon trekking through an area unknown by most.  Furthermore, this also allowed the newlyweds to spend time connecting during the hikes!  Even in late July, the weather was refreshingly cool especially when they made their way to the top of the waterfall!

If you’ve fallen in love with photos of dramatic moss-covered canyons and secret waterfalls (like we shared in our Múlagljúfur post), this adventure is absolutely worth adding to your self drive Iceland itinerary.  First, I’ll walk you through the history of how Eldgjá was formed.  Second, the best way to get there safely. Third, what to expect on the hike. Fourth, tips for making it an unforgettable day!  Let’s do this!!

Eldgjá History

Eldgjá Canyon is literally birthed from a massive volcanic eruption in 939 AD.  Which is specifically part of the Katla volcanic system.  In fact, this eruption produced enormous lava flows and shaped the land you’ll hike on today.  Furthermore, the canyon stretches for about 40 km (or 25 miles) and reaches depths of 150 m (or 490 ft).  Likely, it’s hard to wrap your head around the fact that you’ll be walking in the very fissure that poured out fire and ash over a thousand years ago!  Am I right?!

Inside Eldgjá sits the beautiful Ófærufoss Waterfall.  To illustrate, it’s a two-tiered waterfall.  Additionally, it once had a natural stone arch spanning across it (sadly it collapsed in the 1990’s).  However, today the falls drop gracefully into the canyon, next to picturesque moss and black volcanic rock.  Truly a photographer’s dream come true!

Why Eldgjá Should Be on Your Iceland Bucket List

There’s something truly transformative about standing inside a canyon that once flowed with fire.  But now, centuries later lined with moss and flowing water.  This historical spot, Eldgjá combines history, geology, and natural beauty in a way that feels truly magical!  No matter if you’re planning an adventurous Iceland wedding adventure, elopement, or just a day hike, this gem is a must-see in the Highlands!  For instance, imagine the photos… Volcanic cliffs, lush moss glowing in the midnight sun, and Ófærufoss roaring in the background.  This is the Iceland that feels untouched, wild, and absolutely romantic!

When to Visit the Fire Canyon

Because Eldgjá is in the Icelandic Highlands, it’s only accessible with a proper 4×4 or super jeep when the F-roads are open (usually late-June through mid-September).  Note: Outside of this window the roads are closed / impassable due to snow, river levels, and overall safety conditions.  Always check road.is and safetravel.is before you set off.

How to Get to Eldgjá Canyon

Next, getting to Eldgjá is an adventure in itself, truly!  First, let’s talk about the starting point… The closest town is Kirkjubæjarklaustur along the South Coast.  For instance, it is a perfect place to fuel up, grab snacks, and stay the night.  Second, from the Ring Road (Route 1), turn inland onto F208 (Fjallabaksleið Nyrðri).  Next, from there, take F223 / Eldgjárvegur which leads you directly to the canyon’s main car park and ranger hut.

Third, let’s talk about the vehicle you need again… You absolutely need a 4×4 vehicle with good clearance, your truck needs to be rated and allowed to be driving F-roads and ideally experience crossing rivers.  Fourth, if this makes you nervous, booking a guided Highlands tour is a stress-free option.  Our friends at Gravel Travel can happily get you there!  Additionally, they offer our followers a -10% discount by using the code: WEDDING.

Lastly, you might wonder about parking… There are multiple small parking lots.  The shortest hike to Ófærufoss starts right after a river crossing on F208.  Which is the main Eldgjá ranger station car park offers a longer, but still moderate trail.

Now for the fun part… The hike through Eldgjá  and to Ófærufoss Waterfall!  Here are the specs and what to expect…

• Trail Length: Depending on where you park, the trail to Ófærufoss ranges is around ~2km one way (1-3 hours round-trip).
• Difficulty: Easy to Moderate.
• Terrain: The path follows the river and is relatively flat, with a mix of gravel, rocks, mossy ground, and small loose stones.
• Elevation Gain: Minimal for the short walk (~80 meters), more if you hike up to the waterfall viewpoint.
• Views: You’ll hear Ófærufoss before you see it.  Rounding the canyon bend, the waterfall suddenly appears!  Exciting, right?!
• Note: If you have extra energy, extend your adventure to Gjátindur, the nearby peak.  This is a 5 – 14.5 km (3–4 hour or more depending on loop or longer hike) round-trip hike with steep challenging sections.  But the reward is a panorama view over the canyon and surrounding Southern Icelandic Highlands!

One of my favorite things to do before I lived in Iceland was packing for Iceland!  That being said, I crafted perfect Amazon Packing Lists and also wrote about how to pack a “go bag!”  Make sure you check them out along with this short list…

• 4×4 rental + Full Tank of Fuel
• Waterproof Jacket & Pants
• Warm Layers
• Hiking Boots
• Snacks + 1–2 liters of water per person
• GPS/GPX file of the Trail
• Headlamp (even in summer, just in case)
• Hiking Poles (if you’re an unsure hiker)
• Camera / Phone

Terrain & Safety Tips

Next, trails are well-marked but fragile.  Therefore, please stay on paths to protect the moss.  In some cases, it takes 80-100 years to grow back a foot print you leave on it!  Now just like the weather in Iceland, the weather in Eldgjá changes quickly.  Hello Icelandic Highlands!  So it is important to bring / dress in waterproof layers, sturdy boots, gloves, and a hat, even in summer.  Also be aware, there’s no food, fuel, or cell service in this area of Highlands.  Stock up before leaving the Ring Road.  And the restrooms are hit or miss depending on the month / day you are there.  Additionally, if you plan to hike the rim or Gjátindur, trekking poles and a GPS/GPX track are helpful.  Lastly, make sure you log your plan with SafeTravel.is too!

Eldgjá Elopement Adventure

Furthermore, if you’re considering a Highland elopement in Iceland, it’s an incredible backdrop for exchanging vows far from the big Ring Road crowds.  However, if Eldgjá is on your list for Iceland wedding photos, it is best to reach out to the establishments who oversee it’s protection before going… Both Vatnajökull National Park (and Icelandic Nature Conservation Agency) and Katla Geopark have this area in their boundaries.  But hiring a local Iceland Wedding Planner, will always be best to help you sort out any permits and permissions.  Feel free to contact us to get that conversation started!

July 11th 2024 Vik Iceland

For their Vik elopement, Erin and Jake chose a cozy yet modern Vik-based hotel as their home base.  To illustrate, the Vik Apartments offer the perfect mix of privacy meets luxury.  Also, staying in the heart of Vík gave them easy access to our areas most breathtaking locations!  Additionally offering the convenience of a comfortable retreat after their adventures.  Many hotels in Vík feature floor-to-ceiling windows with ocean or mountain views, which is exactly the kind of romantic setting you want when waking up on your wedding day in Iceland.  Am I right?  After all, this is exactly why our #vikdreamhouse has floor to ceiling 180 degree views!

Now, their elopement began on a rainy July 11th 2024 morning.  The pair had a cozy time getting ready within their luxury apartment while our Iceland Wedding Planner team catered to them in every way they needed.  From the hair and makeup to the detail photos to even champagne to kick off the morning, they had it all!  When the super jeep arrived the soon to be newlyweds grabbed their “go bags” and loaded into the truck to begin their elopement journey…

Private Black Sand Beach Wedding Ceremony

Next, Erin and Jake love love love and maybe borderline obsessed with black sand beaches!  #ustoo!  And one of our favorites is a private property beach tucked far away from the busy touristy spots.  On this beach, there are incredible lava rock cliffs that showcase so much history!  Afterall, there are few places in the world that are as dramatic as Iceland’s black sand beaches.

Our Iceland Wedding Planner couple, exchanged vows on this stunning private black sand beach surrounded by the sound of crashing waves and the endless expanse of the North Atlantic Ocean.  One of things we love the most about this moment in time for Erin and Jake is that they were unapologetically themselves and did things they way they wanted… For example, Erin is 100% a stiletto gal and she rocked them like a BOSS on the beach before, during, and after their Vik elopement ceremony!

Vastness and Vows

Meanwhile, there is something incredibly symbolic about saying your vows against the backdrop of Iceland’s raw landscapes.  So what did that mean for Jake and Erin?  The newlyweds wanted to say their vows to each other by themselves, fully.  Therefore, our Iceland Wedding Planning and Photography team took them to another private black beach where they stood on the lava rock cliffs.

Fair to say, standing on the windswept shore, the couple felt small in the face of such beauty.  Which isn’t a fantastic feeling to have? For instance, the feeling of being part of something so much bigger?  Yet, they would likely say, their love was the anchor in the vastness around them.  Which is a perfect balance of vulnerability and strength is what also makes a Vik elopement oh so meaningful!

Additionally, this moment set the tone for the rest of their Vik elopement: Bold, authentic, and unforgettable!

Waterfall Hike & Icelandic Hot Dog BBQ

After their intimate Vik elopement ceremony, the newlyweds laced up their boots for a sketchy hike to a hidden waterfall.  In fact, the roaring cascade created a dramatic photo backdrop for them and our local Iceland Elopement Photographer while also giving them a chance to soak in Iceland’s wildly crazy beauty together.  Additionally, this waterfall spot even came with a super cool natural cave to checkout!

In true Icelandic fashion, they capped off the return hike with an Icelandic hot dog BBQ.  A super fun delicious fun, casual way to celebrate their marriage with this unforgettable lunch experience!  Now hot dogs may sound simple, but in Iceland they’re a national treasure!  Especially when enjoyed in nature with the person you love most.

Hiking to a Private Ice Cave in Iceland for Vik Elopement Photos

Next, pretty sure the highlight of their Vik elopement adventure was a guided hike to a private ice cave near Vik.  Few couples can say they took wedding photos surrounded by shimmering blue ice walls.  However, in Iceland, these unique experiences are part of what makes elopements so extraordinary!

With crampons on, the couple explored the glacier’s hidden corners.  Further, their Iceland wedding photographer, captured jaw-dropping photos that will be treasured for a lifetime, truly!  This is the kind of once-in-a-lifetime adventure that makes choosing a Vik elopement worth it, right?!

A Vik elopement isn’t just about the scenery, it’s about the experience.  Especially with our team!  Furthermore, next on their action packed wedding day experience was a final stop on the private side of Dyrhólaey.  You know, the iconic sea arch that towers over the Atlantic?!  Plus, in July, the cliffs are alive with puffins nesting along the edges, which offers another layer to the journey…

June Wedding in Vik

June in Iceland is ideal for folks who crave action packed days.  To illustrate, the long daylight hours stretch endlessly and the landscapes are alive with color!  Which let’s be honest… For adventurous couples, it’s the perfect month to say “I do” in one of the most breathtaking places on Earth!  << Enter Brandon and Joan >>  This pair took their waterfall wedding vows to another level…

First, it all begins early in the morning with our local Iceland wedding photographer crafting the perfect setups for Joan’s wedding dress.  Second, the pair had a few of their loved ones join them as they got ready and for the journey.  Third, as soon as the super jeep arrived the group grabbed their “go bags” and loaded to embark!

Highlands and Icelandic Lupine…

The day began with a drive into the Icelandic Highlands, where purple Icelandic lupine roll across the hills and valleys.  The flowers were in peak bloom, truly creating a dreamy backdrop against glacial rivers.  Meanwhile, the couple took time to wander through the blooms, hand in hand, taking in the quietness of the Highlands before their waterfall wedding vows.

Next, the main event took place at a very hard to get to and secluded private waterfall in a narrow canyon.  Furthermore, the group was surrounded by the rumble of falling water as Brandon and Joan exchanged their waterfall wedding vows.  Additionally, the group kicked off this new chapter for the newlyweds with bubbles!  How fabulous, right?

After their waterfall wedding vows the group journey to the private side of Dyrhólaey Black Sand Beach.  Here waves crashed dramatically against a towering sea arch.  For example, the contrast of dark volcanic sands and the bride’s flowing dress created cinematic moments at every turn, truly!  100% sure this location is perfect for couples who want both natural drama and serene romance in their Iceland wedding photos!

Foggy Highland Discovery

As the morning turned to afternoon, the adventure continues with venturing deep into the Highlands… Meanwhile they were met by a rolling blanket of fog.  But then again that is the weather in Iceland for you, ever changing!  However, instead of obscuring the view, they chose to look at the experience as adding a layer of mystery… In fact, some might even say that this foggy Highland discovery gave the couple the sense they’d stepped into a ghost story!

Ever wonder why a February Iceland elopement is pure magic?  Well, if you’re on the hunt for a bold, beautiful wedding surrounded by nature’s raw power, Iceland in February might be exactly what your heart is calling for.  And it sure was for Katarzyna and Jacek!  On February 27th, 2024, the pair embarked on the ultimate romantic adventure through the icy landscapes of Vík, Iceland.  Truly proving that winter weddings can be just as epic as summer ones!

Eloping in Vik Iceland

Next, our hometown of Vik Iceland is known for its black sand beaches, cliffs, and dramatic winter weather.  Which for many offers the ideal setting for those seeking something off the beaten path.  Eloping in our tiny southern town allows you to immerse yourself in the snowy mountains and untouched landscapes.  The morning began before Katarzyna and Jacek.  Our Vik wedding photographer was hard at work documenting all of their fabulous details.  Then they grabbed their “go bags” and started their journey to their February Iceland elopement ceremony location…

Meanwhile, Katarzyna and Jacek began their February Iceland elopement with an intimate wedding ceremony in front of a private winter waterfall.  Surrounded by snowdrifts, frozen icicles, and the roar of fresh falling water.  It was here they exchanged vows, rings, and celebrated their new commitment with a kiss!  The bride’s Iceland wedding dress flowed in the wind while the groom wore classic black a perfect contrast!

After their February Iceland elopement ceremony, they explored the secluded waterfall.  Far to say that it was not only peaceful but also captured the essence February… Being wild, beautiful, and connective with nature!

Icelandic Mountain Blizzard Adventures

Post-ceremony, the adventure elopement continued with mountaintop views.  But Iceland had its own plans… The weather quickly turned, transforming the landscape into a full-on blizzard in parts!  But don’t fret, the newlyweds champed through the madness for some incredible February Iceland elopement photos above the town of Vik!  Additionally, as the snow swirled, Katarzyna and Jacek held hands and faced the storm with laughter creating some memorable wedding photos!

Seeking Refuge in Cozy Natural Cave

With wind and the snowy wonderland outside, the couple sought shelter in a cozy natural cave, as part of their February Iceland elopement journey.  Meanwhile, it was lit only by the couple’s smiles and the soft glow of winter light.  This impromptu moment of warmth and calm became an unexpected highlight for them I think!

Furthermore, as we always say… No winter elopement in Iceland would be complete without a visit to an Iceland ice cave!   After all, these stunning natural formations create an unreal backdrop for wedding portraits.  Likely why Katarzyna and Jacek braved the elements to explore not just one, but two!  And delighted in a glass of champagne in celebration too as the day turned to night!

Following their February Iceland elopement adventure, the newlyweds celebrated indoors with a kransakaka, a traditional Icelandic wedding.  What is it you might wonder?  To illustrate, it is cake made from almonds and beautifully decorated with icing.  This sweet touch added a cultural depth to their elopement day with our Iceland Wedding Planner team.
