The History of Thorrablot (Þorrablót)

Thorrablot (or in Iceland: Þorrablót) takes place during the month of Þorri in the old Norse calendar.  To illustrate, it is typically from late January through February.  Historically, this period marked the heart of winter, when survival depended on careful preservation of food and strong social bonds.

Meanwhile, the festival’s name refers to ancient midwinter sacrifices or feasts believed to honor Þorri.  Who is he?  He was a mythological figure associated with winter.  While the exact pagan rituals faded after Iceland’s Christianization, the spirit of gathering to share food and stories endured time.  Furthermore, in the 19th century, during a period of growing national identity, Icelanders revived Thorrablot as a cultural celebration.  Additionally, today, communities, families, and organizations host festive yearly gatherings that blend historical homage with modern fun.  To illustrate, this often featuring speeches, songs, skits and all kinds of other playful humor.

What Happens at a Thorrablot Celebration?

First, a typical Thorrablot is lively and communal.  Second, there is usually a committee made up of local village people (both couples and singles) which works on the plan the entire year.  Third, a theme that is chosen.  For example, the year my husband and I served (2025 in Vik) we had the theme “Old Iceland / Old Vik.”  Decorations follow suit, the committee dresses to represent, and usually the tickets and any media (like a 2-3 issues of newspapers called “The Half-wit” follow).

Next, upon arrival guests are greeted by the committee members, pieces of fermented shark, shots of Brennivin and non-alcoholic sparkling.  Guests gather around long tables, in small towns bring their own alcohol and mingle until the hosts introduce the event.  Additionally, at this point everyone lines up to enjoy the traditional foods which I’ll detail out below.  Afterwards, it is time for lots of singing and the main event, the show!  For instance, in my town of Vik in South Iceland, the committee pre-record skits making fun of things that happened throughout the year or poking fun at some people in the town.  Following the event turns into a dance that is a mix of Icelandic folk dancing and modern.

Regardless of the town, the common elements in Thorrablot are enjoying traditional foods, listen to speeches or storytelling (sometimes comedic or satirical), sing together, celebrating Icelandic heritage.  Overall, the atmosphere is warm and festive  and an absolute reminder that winter is easier when shared!

Traditional Thorrablot Food

Food is at the heart of Thorrablot!  In fact, it is a time of reflecting how Icelanders historically preserved ingredients to last through long winters.  The selection, often called “Þorramatur,” showcases methods like curing, fermenting, smoking, and pickling.

Some well-known dishes include:

• Hákarl (fermented shark) — Perhaps the most famous (and notorious), known for its strong aroma and deep historical roots.
• Hangikjöt (smoked lamb) — A beloved staple with a rich, smoky flavor.
• Svið (singed sheep’s head) — Prepared traditionally and served in slices.
• Lifrarpylsa and blóðmör (liver and blood sausages) — Rustic, hearty foods tied to farm life.
• Rúgbrauð (dense rye bread) — Slightly sweet and often baked using geothermal heat.
• Pickled ram’s testicles — A historic delicacy reflecting nose-to-tail preservation practices.

These foods tell the story of ingenuity in a harsh environment, where nothing went to waste.  Today, many gatherings balance traditional items with more familiar dishes, allowing guests to experience heritage at their comfort level.

The Cultural Meaning Behind the Festival

In conclusion, beyond the menu, Thorrablot represents continuity.  Truly, a way of honoring ancestors and remembering how communities thrived despite isolation and extreme weather.  To reiterate, we must not forget, to have respect for tradition, gratitude for shared resources, humor in the face of hardship and pride in Icelandic identity!

Being Diagnosed with Celiac Disease in Iceland

Ann here, founder of Iceland Wedding Planner…  Shall we embark on story time with Ann?  At the start of this year, I was unexpectedly diagnosed with Celiac Disease.  First, it begins with my dentist mentioning I might have beginning signs of acid reflux.  So getting diagnosed sooner than later would lessen the damage and cost.  Especially if anything were to happen in the future with my teeth.  Second, under her advice I went to my General Practitioner and got a referral to a gastro doctor.  Which to my surprise means you’re scheduled for an endoscopy as your first appointment.

Third, after the endoscopy the gastroenterologist confirmed that my villi were completely flattened (total villous atrophy) and that visual means he suspects I have Celiac Disease.  But because I carry no symptoms, I am a silent-Celiac.  Therefore, even one speck of gluten does damage to my insides.  Which makes me absolutely paranoid about eating.  Because who the heck wants to end up with stomach cancer or the many other ailments that could happen should I not be on a strict gluten free with no cross contamination diet.  #noone

Fourth, the days following, the biopsy and blood work further confirmed the diagnosis, so “Hello Iceland Gluten Free Lifestyle” overnight!  Likewise, just like anyone sucker punched with that diagnosis, I went down the rabbit hole of grieving all of the American junk food that I would never ever enjoy again for the first few weeks.  Fifth, I hired a nutritionist to help me navigate through what is actually Celiac-safe options at the grocery stores and getting back to the basics of food nourishment.  Sixth, I live in the tiny town of Vik Iceland and I’m very strict about cross contamination so take my advice with a grain of salt if you’re gluten free but not Celiac.

Is Iceland Good for Gluten Free or Celiac People?

When you’re contemplating visiting Iceland you might wonder if there are gluten free and Celiac safe options…  Honestly, it could be better if you’re comparing to more mainstream populated countries like North America, France, Germany, etc.  I’ve travelled since my diagnoses and instant jealousy ensues.  Why?  Because there are huge aisles and options in other countries, even gluten free devoted bakeries and restaurants.

On the other hand, considering Iceland gluten free, there is far less options.  Our tiny island in the North Atlantic, Iceland does not have any 100% gluten free establishments.  But then that just means you need to stick to the basics.  For instance protein, fruits, vegetables, and pre-packaged items.  Overall, just about everywhere can offer an Iceland gluten free foot option (IE, burger without a bun, salad, etc) so if you are sensitive to gluten don’t be fearful.

Unfortunately, just like anywhere, we Celiac folks will have to see if the restaurant or cafe has an understanding of our disease dynamics.  To illustrate, where gluten can be lurking (natural flavors, seasonings, and some folks even think potatoes have gluten!).  Also as we all know they need to willing to go the extra mile to ensure no cross contamination.  For example, asking the staff to thorough clean workspaces, change gloves, and be diligent of not touching any other food items while preparing.

Gluten Free Iceland Applications:

Likely, you might wonder if there are any helpful websites or applications that can aid you on your gluten free Iceland mission.  Additionally, downloading the Kronan phone app and browsing the website helps as they diligently mark their productions with symbols.  For example, dairy free, gluten free, etc when it is.  However, label reading in store is still important to do incase of human error.

Furthermore, I personally log my experiences with restaurants on the Find Me Gluten Free app (Please do this too if you come!).  Also, if you’re looking for feedback from locals directly, join the Facebook Group named, “Glútenlaust á Íslandi.”  But do make sure you do a “search” before asking a question in case it’s already been discussed.  Additionally, buying several “Celiac Disease” cards to hand to restaurant servers (English and Icelandic) to review can go a long way as an extra precaution.  Worth the investment in my opinion!

Words for Gluten in Icelandic:

“Ég er með glutenóþol” = I have a gluten intolerance.

Hveti = Wheat

Hafra = Oats

Rúgmjöl = Rye Flour

Bygg = Barley

Iceland Grocery Stores for Gluten Free Food

Folks who have allergies, intolerances, and immunocompromising diseases may feel safer in renting apartments or self-catering options when journeying around Iceland.  I’m with you, frankly!  Bringing along my pre-made food (by me) in my Yeti cooler has become a staple to my routine.  But you might be curious to know where I stock up?

I live in the tiny ~800 person Southern town of Vik Iceland where 60% of the population is foreigners.  Which means we have 1 grocery store and grocery stores with more options are 2.5-3 hours away in Reykjavik.  Moreover, my go to’s are as follows:

Iceland Gluten Free Places to Buy Groceries:

1. Fjarðarkaup– Hands down my favorite store with the best and biggest selection for gluten free in Iceland.  Anytime I am in Reykjavik I stock up!  At the time this Iceland Wedding Planner blog post is written, the gluten free aisle was the last to the left and some additional items are found in the taco aisle, fruits, veggies, and meats too.
2. Kostur– Our token American store in Iceland offers a nice selection of gluten free and celiac safe options.
3. Kronan– The majority of their gluten free selection is found near the bread area but some additional ones are spread around the store (IE, Taco aisle and pasta aisle).  Also the pre-packaged meat area has indications on pepperoni and some other meats that they are without gluten, soy, or allergies).  Further, you’ll find a small selection of Schar products (breads, pretzels, cookies, crackers, pizza crust, etc).
4. Netto– Their selection is found by the health food area and is small but decent.  Worth a look!
5. Pris– Newest grocery store to Iceland and they are trying to slowly introducing new gluten free options.  Haven’t been but so says the Iceland gluten free group!
6. Bonus– Super small variety and not worth a stop in my opinion.  Honestly, I’ve been disappointed almost every time.  However, if you have an oven and you look carefully through the frozen section you might be able to find gluten free muffins and bread in there!
7. Hagkaup– This store is the most expensive grocery store in Iceland and can be hit or miss with gluten free items.
8. Kjötkompaní– Icelandic Butcher.  Remind them to change their gloves if you are Celiac!
9. Costco– Is a fabulous spot to grab certified gluten free snacks, meat, veggies, and fruit!
10. Heilsuhúsið– Our token health food store.
11. Bring Food from Home!  If you desire specific or must have things or 100% seasonings, etc I encourage you to bring your own!

A few thoughts on grocery shopping in Iceland and needing to be gluten free… To illustrate, if you are traveling around it’s best to stock up in Reykjavik before heading out of the city limits.  Why?  Selection and in stock items are 50/50, especially during summer in Iceland (we have gone WEEKS without GF sandwich bread in the South).  I’ve seen my the Kronan in Vik ransacked with ZERO gluten free items (even meat and quality veggies / fruit) when the high season is upon us.  Therefore, make sure you take your chance to stock up before embarking on your Ring Road journey.  A collapsible cooler is ideal to bring!

Iceland Gluten Free & Celiac Safe Restaurants

Alright, so here’s the topic you’ve been waiting for!  Dinning out in Iceland gluten free and finding restaurants are Celiac safe.  Frankly, I’m a super strict Celiac when it comes to eating out.  For example, I play the 20 questions game of asking how the food is stored, prepared, shared spaces, the whole gamut.

One thing to REALLY BE AWARE OF: Many restaurants in Iceland boast an item is “gluten free” but it’s not at it’s base.  Meaning may be gluten free from them to you but they do not check the back base ingredients to ensure 100%.  For example, soup stock, spices, or using ingredients that are “gluten free” but not free from cross contamination which in my opinion SCARY for Celiac’s!  Cannot tell you how many times I’ve run into this more often than not and then the tune of the server / chef is that they cannot guarantee it’s 100%, rather “95%.”

But as I alluded to above, almost every restaurant in Iceland can typically offer a gluten free modification.  Here is a list of Iceland Gluten Free Restaurants by Region for ease of referencing during your Iceland self-drive itinerary!  NOTE: Iceland hasn’t gotten on the labeling their menu bus yet for gluten free as of the time this blog post was written (September 2024).

• Fuego (inside Hlemmur Mathöll food hall): They serve corn tacos at the time this blog post was written.

• Lóa Restaurant

• N1 Hvolsvöllur Fuel Station – Sometimes has gluten free sandwiches in the cooler you can warm up
• Ice Cave Bistro in Vik-  There is curry and Icelandic Meat Soup that is gluten free plus they pair it with gluten free bread by request.  NOTE: I no longer order the Meat Soup because their stock has gluten.  The curry scares me as it is in a closed buffet (IE worker dishes) so I stick to the meat soup.  They also say their salads are gluten free but I’m not risking the cross contamination in the buffet.
• The Berg inside Hotel Vik
• Black Crust Pizzeria in Vik –Note: I’m a local to Vik and I do not eat here due to their processes in cross contamination.  I make my own pizza with gluten free pepperoni and Schar crust (Also be aware, that is all they are using here is this same premade Schar crust, not made there).
• Sudur Vik in Vik  –Note: They have recently added labeling to their new menu showcasing “GF” items.
• The Soup Company in Vik –Note: Same as above!
• Hotel Klaustur Restaurant in Kirkjubæjarklaustur
• Restaurant Gigur – Kirkjubæjarklaustur (inside Hotel Laki)

For Celiac safe restaurants in Iceland, it’s hit or miss for me on cross contamination.  When I find safe or unsafe places I log it into Find my Gluten Free app.  Honestly though, I’m scared to death to eat out.  Regardless, there are a few places I’ve grown to trust this last year…

• 1. Hafnartorg Gallery Food Hall in downtown Reykjavik – The Italian place (La Trattoria) I order the ribeye safely.
  2. Olifa – La Madre Pizza in Reykjavik –Make it clear you’re Celiac and remind them about their CC process and delight in a Cesar salad and delicious gluten free pizza of your choice!!
  3. Mathús Garðabæjar – Outside of Reykjavik.  Hello beef carpaccio and a delicious salad!
  4. Silli Kokkur – Outside of Reykjavik with the BEST gluten free burgers I have had in Iceland!  …and they have it on the menu as 100% gluten free!
  5. Byrja – In Selfoss this is my go to… Best and safest Caesar Salad!
  6. Hotel Stracta Bistro in Hella can do a basic pan fried Arctic Char with potatoes in olive oil / salt with no cross.
  7. Midgard Restaurant & Bar (Hvolsvöllur)  -Delicious Adventure Burger they can make Celiac Safe!
  8. Sudur Vik in Vik  –Note: They have recently added labeling to their new menu showcasing “GF” items (see the Find Me Gluten Free app for photos of it)
  9. The Berg inside Hotel Vik – Almost everything on their menu is gluten free and they understand no cross contamination.
  10. Klaustur Restaurant – Within the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.  The chef Einar is very aware of Celiac Disease and will modify the dishes accordingly and do his best to ensure everything is cleaned and no cross contamination happens.
  11. Restaurant Gigur – Kirkjubæjarklaustur (inside Hotel Laki)
  12. Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon Near Höfn – Restaurant inside will prepare your food in a separate space, just ask!
  13. Otto Matur & Drykkur – In Höfn, went out of their way to reassure me food was 100% cross contamination free!

This list is from my current and personal experience as a diagnosed Celiac living in Iceland.  Folks may have positive experiences outside of this list, but these are the only tried and trusted I’m comfortable standing behind.  Please always do your due diligence in advocating for yourself and asking all the questions that make you feel comfortable dining somewhere.

Everything You Need to Know About Eider Ducks

Although they are formally called Common Eider Ducks, they are really special birds.  Their formal species name is Somateria Mollissima, which translates to “softest down body.”  Male eiders are black and white with a slightly green nape of the neck.  Whereas, female eiders are brown but still very distinct from other birds.  Both range between 20-28 inches long and are typically 1.8-6.7 lbs each (largest duck in the Northern Hemisphere).  They can fly up to 70 mph and dive down up to 65 feet!

More often then not, they are called, “sea-ducks” because they spend the majority of their days on the ocean.  Next, you’ll often recognize an eider duck by the sound they make… To illustrate, the male eider does a very distinct “ah-whoo” sound.  Whereas the female eider still does a “quack.”

Contrary to popular belief too, eider ducks do not mate for life.  Typically they find a new partner each year.  However, they are creatures of habit and return to the same breeding grounds each year.  Why?  Well, eider ducks are colony breeders.  Which means they share the responsibility.  For example, a female may jump between nests if she sees another female leave her nest.  And sometimes if a female doesn’t feel fit to keep her eggs warm, she may give away her eggs to another nest.

Fun Facts About Eider Ducks:

• Eider females will often return to the same oceanside area or island she was originally hatched.
• Female eider chooses the nest spot.
• Male eiders main job is during the winter and he must protect the female so she can eat as much as possible!
• The female takes feathers from her chest to make the nest.  Which is exactly how the Iceland eiderdown is created!
• Furthermore, she also does not eat for the 25-28 days she is sitting on the nest.
• In addition, the females also protect their nests by covering and sometimes pooping on them if they get scared and need to leave.  As if to make their eggs less desirable to predators.  Pretty freaking smart birds!
• 1847 is the year Iceland made eider ducks a protected species.

The Magic of Iceland Eiderdown

If you want to snuggle under true luxury, then it doesn’t get better than Iceland eiderdown!  The blankets, comforters, duvets, and pillows that are made from the eider duck nests are truly the softest in the world!!  Especially because they do not have rigid quills that poke through things.

Unlike other down options like goose or other ducks, eiderdown is a sustainable product in everyway.  Because they are never ever harmed for their feathers.  In fact, it’s kind of a magical process!  For instance, the female eider plucks the feathers from her breast.  She does this to make the warmest and most comfy place possible for her eggs.

Moreover, the time and care the farmer takes towards the ducks is extraordinary.  From preparing, protecting, the thorough cleaning and sorting process of the actual eiderdown is so intense.  Plus the intricate last steps of creating the final results of pillows and comforters.

1,000 Year Old Icelandic Tradition

Without a doubt, traditions in Iceland run deep.  Iceland has always been a country that uses everything, it is not a culture of waste.  Furthermore, it is also a land that for thousands of years prides itself on taking great care of their animals and an endless respect for landscapes.  Thus, 1,000 years ago begins the history of Iceland eiderdown farming…

Winters in Iceland are cold and dark and to survive those long winters, Icelanders developed a special relationship with the eider ducks.  The farmers kept them safe during their nesting season, building safe havens and keeping predators away.  And in return, the eider ducks gave them their down to create warm soft blankets.  Therefore, Icelanders remained warm and alive during those incredibly cold winters.

The eider ducks live in Iceland year round, but primarily live in the ocean.  However, they come to land in April and then begin nesting in May (but does depend on the weather in Iceland).  Typically the birds lay between 3-6 eggs.  Because they are colony based, birds a female may not have the energy to hatch the eggs so she would move the eggs to another nest.  Thus some nests could have like 12 eggs!

Although there are several Iceland eiderdown farms throughout the west, north, and east parts of Iceland, we want to support folks who vibe at the same level we do and uphold an American-style standard.  Our Iceland Wedding Planner team hand picked a special farmer to work with and get to know.  His passion, patience, education, care of the birds, and the quality of products were outstanding.

After all, if you’re spending the big bucks to take home a unique souvenir from Iceland you want it to have a story, be of the highest quality and be around for years to come.  Therefore, Helgi Thorsteinsson the owner of Eiderdown Comforters in Vopnafjörður is the perfect choice!

Firstly, Helgi is 3rd generation in eider duck farming… It all begins with his grandparents buying the farm in 1929.  At the time it was only sheep farming.  Secondly, they noticed on their property down by the ocean there was an island with a few nests (12-15).  So they consulted a man from the Westfjords on what to do…

Thirdly, they followed the directions to a tee.  For example, they were told to build fences and create shelters to break the wind for the birds.  Over the years it continued to grow slowly with the help of their 8 children.  The following decades Helgi’s father takes over and it grows to 350-400 nests and now in his generation it is around 2,500 nests!  Pretty darn impressive!!

Responsibilities of an Eiderdown Farmer

Helgi prides himself on ensuring his birds are well taken care of and that he offers a superior end product to his customers.  But what does it take each season to make that happen?  Firstly, it begins with creating specific areas for the eider ducks to come to.  Secondly, it is the responsibility of the Iceland eiderdown farmer to build shelters.  Thirdly, the focus transitions to protecting.

Creating Safe Haven Islands

When Helgi’s grandfather began the Iceland eiderdown farm there was only one island with a few nests.  Over the decades, they expanded the areas and created more islands.  Why islands?  Easy access for the eiders and their ducklings to go in and out from.  After all they are truly “sea ducks!”  Maybe even an element of “safety” also comes with it too, who knows what those cute little birds think!

Building Shelters

Creating an environment where the ducks feel safe is a priority of the Iceland eiderdown farmers.  So what does that look like?  First, it begins in the fall with cleaning the old nest areas of seaweed and other unwanted items.  Second, then the maintaining and building of shelters continues both in fall and early spring before the eider ducks arrive.  Often the shelters are made from cut wood, old tires, rocks, or washed up driftwood.

Third, then Helgi puts down fresh hay to make it ready for the females to pick a spot.  Also, the fresh hay gives a good base before the female eider plucks the feathers from her chest.  Lastly, one of the important aspects in building the shelters is to ensure they have privacy.  Eiders want to feel safe and secure while they nest.

Protecting the Birds, Nests and Ducklings

Unfortunately the eider ducks in Iceland have many predators such as the following: Ravens, Great Skuas, Seagulls, Minks, and Arctic Foxes.  Therefore, it is extremely important to the survival of the birds, eggs, and ducklings that the Iceland eiderdown farmer is actively defending them.  How is that done you might wonder?

Well, first he makes the islands as secure as he can in regards to ensuring sheep cannot come in.  Next, he puts up flags and scarecrows to hopefully keep flying predators away.  Then to be a successful eiderdown farmer you also need to be a good tracker or have one or two on your team.  Because the foxes and minks will surely take any chance hey can to hunt the ducks, steal the eggs and eat the ducklings.

So daily, Helgi is walking his property and scouting on scopes from afar to track them to ensure his herd of eider ducks are safe.  This could mean shooting the predators if they come near the birds or their nests.  Remember, the eider ducks are defenseless against who their predators are.  So this is a 1,000 year old responsibility and an act the farmer must carry out in order to protect them.

Collecting Icelandic Eiderdown

Certainly every farm has a different approach to how and when they collect the Iceland eiderdown.  To illustrate, Helgi’s way is going a few days before the eggs hatch (20-26 days of the 28 day mark) to switch it out with fresh hay.  Why does he do that?  Because the hay allows the eggs to be turned easier by the female, especially towards the end of the incubation period.

The female eider must continuously turn the eggs to make sure the duckling inside develops.  For example, if an egg were to be broken the other eggs… Whether by predator or by accident in the nest, the other eggs could be affected by getting “glued” together if the eiderdown stays.  But with the fresh hay it does not get glued together and the female can continue to turn the eggs easily.

When Helgi goes in to collect, he brings 2 bags with him.  For instance, one of fresh hay and the other for the Iceland eiderdown.  He approaches each nest very slowly and carefully on his knees.  Next, he gently picks up the eggs, sets them down to do the switch.  Then he places the eggs back into the nest.  Certainly, he never does all of the nests at one time, only 30-100 maybe per day during that time period because he does not want the colony to feel “robbed” in any way.  Therefore, there is a delicate balance that must come into play.

Eider Duck Down 6 Stages of Processing

High quality Iceland eiderdown doesn’t have actual feathers.  So wait, what does that mean? Basically there is not a quill to poke at you.  Also, it means what the female is plucking from her chest is the actual “down.”  Nonetheless, it does not mean the nests are feather free because they are not and that is where the intricate processing timeline comes into play…

1st Step: Drying Rack

Once Helgi returns from the collecting the Iceland eiderdown, he will lay it out on a drying rack.  The idea is to have a first sort and drying it out.  Plus if it’s super wet, he can add heat through the bottom.

2nd Step: Washing & High Heat Disinfecting

Following the first step, the Iceland eiderdown is moved into the formal processing room.  Thereafter, it goes into the first machine in which washes and heats the down to at least 120 degrees.  It is in that machine for 12 hours.  Without a doubt, using machines to thoroughly clean and process the eiderdown, adds to the cleanliness and longer life of the final product.

3rd Step: Additional Cleaning at High Heat 

Directly after the first machine, the eiderdown is moved to the next.  This next machine does an additional cleaning for24 hours at an even higher heat (125 degrees).  Thus, it ensures all bugs are dead and also starts sifting out foreign materials from the down.

4th Step: Sifting Machine

The last formal machine the Iceland eiderdown is process through is another sifting machine.  For example, this will take away any debris within the down such as feathers, hay, etc.

5th Step: Hand Wash

Later, the final steps are completed on demand when orders come in.  In short, Helgi will take the amount of eiderdown he needs to fulfill the order and hand washes it a final time.

6th Step: Hand Picking

Lastly the final step in Iceland eiderdown farming is creating unique products for you!  Helgi personally sits down to hand pick the down specifically for his customers comforters, duvets and pillows.  Essentially this means he takes any feathers or quills that snuck through and ensures he only makes his products from high quality down.

Why Eiderdown is 100% Worth the Cost

Likely, you now understand why Iceland eiderdown is worth every penny it costs.  From the hundreds of labor intensive hours and weeks that are involved overall to the intricate 6 step cleaning process all the way to making your desired product…  In fact, it all adds up in crafting this unique sustainable lifetime product for you.  To illustrate further, it takes 60-70 nests to create around 1 kilogram.  Which then translates to around 2 adult size pillows.  Further, the products are fully certified by the Eiderdown Association (Æðarræktarfélag Íslands) as well.

How to Buy Eiderdown Comforters & Pillows

In conclusion, the best way to buy an Iceland eiderdown product is directly with the farmer.  No reason to have a middle man involved.  Hence, why we have shared with you Helgi’s farm and process today.  Buying a comforter, duvet or pillows of any size from Eiderdown Comforters will not disappoint!  As a matter of fact, he offers both Cotton or Silk-blends in all of his products.  Furthermore, you can have your pick on sizes too!

Secret Wedding Just For Us

This past year has been challenging for everyone around the world on all fronts.  Furthermore, countless engaged couples had to shift their wedding plans multiple times in one way or another.  For example, from choosing to hold secret weddings, to rescheduling to later dates, and we even had one couple change from an Iceland elopement to a Moab adventure wedding.

Wait, did you read that right… secret weddings?  Indeed you did!  Think Braveheart style secret weddings.  Where the two of you have a ceremony 100% for the two of you, no one else.  Therefore, it doesn’t matter where it was either… Courthouse, backyard, lakeside, in the mountains, etc, but you did it with intention.  Meanwhile, it’s not how you planned it or dreamt but it’s a bright spot exactly when you needed it and there is no shame in embracing that need or want!

Well, let’s get personal and rewind to 5 years ago last week, March 2016… Davíð and I (Ann) held a secret wedding just for us a few months before our planned Lofoten Islands Elopement.  Why?  Personally, for me it was a no brainer because I’m an only child, core family living in Ohio and I had the big wedding with guests previously.  Plus, there would be no family drama, no interruptions, no judging, or anyone trying to upstage or upset.  Luckily, Davíð felt similar despite being from a large family!

Next, that chilly March morning we met our favorite Pastor at a picturesque lakeside church and held our secret wedding ceremony.  A ceremony just for us in every way shape and form.  As a matter of fact, thinking back, it’s still one of my favorite days we have shared because of how quite, calm, intimate, and sparkly it felt.

Following that day we held our wedding, party back in Iceland, even celebrated our first anniversary with an adventure session in the Westman Islands.  Second year anniversary took us to the famed Rayavadee in Thailand for another adventurous couple session.  But then we slacked off on celebrating with photos… Realizing that, we planned to have an Iceland vow renewal expedition for our 5th wedding anniversary!

Renewing Marriage Vows in Iceland

Firstly, renewing your vows can be simple or all the way up to elaborate.  Maybe even let the milestone you’re celebrating dictate how big you go…  For instance, you can easily re-read your wedding ceremony and / or personal vows again to each other anywhere (backyard, park, on vacation, etc.) to center you back to that moment in time.

Secondly, it provides you the opportunity to get your wedding attire back out!  Happy to report, 5 years later my wedding dress still fits   After all, who doesn’t want that bragging right?

Thirdly, we believe more couples should take the time out of their busy schedules to enjoy a fancy hotel room to reconnect (our fave is booking the Executive Room at Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon).  Then the next day, embark on a full day adventuring together and at some point renew their vows.  Especially if your original wedding day wasn’t how you pictured it, why not on your 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, or 25th wedding anniversary get exactly what you want!  Fourth, if you love details, have your Iceland vow renewal photographer capture them like we did!

Discovering a Crystal Ice Cave

For our 5th anniversary we wanted to spend the day adventuring together in an area we normally don’t have time to get to… The crystal blue ice caves!  The majority of them are found within Vatnajökull National Park.  Which comes with endless beauty and countless outlets for ice caves.  Ideally for us, we would privately say our personal vows to each other in multiple locations (a few promises at each location).  So without further ado, we are excited to share with you our very own Iceland vow renewal!

Hiking has always been naturally part of our relationship since inception.  All that said, it was important that one of our locations include a hike across the glacier to a lagoon.  The blue skies were endless and the glacier walls and icebergs were stunning!  Truly, a perfect backdrop for our Iceland vow renewal photos!

Standing on top of a glacier and playing among the broken pieces of ice, makes you feel like such a small part in something so much bigger.  It’s a fabulous moment to reflect and cherish the moments that brought you to that point… Also another ideal spot for renewing our vows in Iceland!

Elopement Expedition to More Ice Caves & Waterfall

Our Iceland vow renewal adventure day transformed from hiking to an expedition once we began to scout for more ice caves!  My jaw dropped at the next two areas we found!!  The beauty of mother nature naturally carving out such a stunning place seriously blew my mind.  For instance, it was actually multiple private ice caves within one… And technically one came along with a waterfall too!

Rounding out our Iceland vow renewal day, was kicking off our crampons, changing our clothes, taking drone and detail photos at the Dverghamrar Cliffs!  We may or may not have also celebrated with a vintage bottle of Perrier-Jouët!  Super pretty stop as we made our trek back home to Selfoss.

Most of us wait all our life to find our forever love or aka, our soulmate.  Sometimes, it takes a try or two to find that person and there is absolutely no shame in that (I’m proof, remember?)!  But once you find your perfect person who shows you how you should be loved and teaches you to love at a deeper level, you better hold tight to them and never let go!

But as we all know, love has many phases as it grows.  Choosing the same person every day is just that, a choice.  Just as choosing to be happy today or being grateful.  Some days it’s super easy, others it can be challenge, but you do it every day in honor of the wedding vows you declared to each other and the mutual respect you share.  There are days when one partner gives 90% and the other can only offer 10% and you support them through.

I personally appreciate those highs and lows, because they are fantastic opportunities for character building as a couple and for yourself individually.  During high season of planning weddings and elopements in Iceland, I often feel like the worst wife ever but then during the slower season, I morph to become the best wife ever.  As an entrepreneur (IE, #girlboss) it can be a very delicate life-work balance as some of you may easily relate to.  Let me tell you… Keeping weekly date nights, are a relationship savor in keeping us forever newlyweds!

My amazing husband Davíð Geir, is the reason I can stumble into adventures so fearlessly and prevail so passionately.  He’s a fellow entrepreneur and gets the lifestyle.  He has an endless supply of patience, effortlessly keeps me grounded but still encourages my dreams I try (and bring) to reality, and there is seriously no stop to his kindness to me and to others.  I’m proud to be his wife as we head into year two of our marriage.  Remember our Lofoten Islands Elopement?  If not, head back HERE.

This past fall, one of my super talented primary photographers, Jean Smith adventured with David and I to the magical volcanic Westman Islands for an Iceland wedding anniversary portrait session.  We spent a few days celebrating our elopement anniversary on Heimaey (the main island of Vestmannaeyjar).  So!  Why not come along with us today as we share with you the incredible beauty of the island and also our Iceland post wedding anniversary session!

There were all sorts of stunning nook and cranny spots we found on Heimaey for our Iceland wedding anniversary portraits.  We’ve previously been there several times so it was easy for us to introduce Jean to several of our favorite locations!  Iceland Wedding Planner Tip:  When we scout Iceland wedding locations, typically 4 factors come to mind…

1- Is the location on public land or private land?

2- Does the area look stunning rain, shine or foggy?

3- By season, knowing what the textures and tones of the area will exude…

4- And the nearest cave (or waterfall)!

Fun Fact: Did you know half of Iceland is privately owned.  What does that mean?  It means, you would require permission (beforehand) to have professional wedding photographs taken in those areas.  The below images were taken at one of our favorite offbeat Westman Islands Iceland wedding locations moments before a 4-day storm that was going to hit and take over the islands…

Can we talk about how amazing the textures and tones are of these spectacular islands south of mainland Iceland?!  Vestmannaeyjar boasts vivid greens to volcanic browns and everything in between!  Such a perfect location for an elopement in Iceland!

Although the above Iceland wedding anniversary images were all blue skies and lovely, as it always does the weather changed quickly!  I may have even uttered the words, “I don’t know how my brides do it” as my teeth kept compulsively chattering from my body shivering!  Anything for spectacular Iceland wedding anniversary photos (and Iceland cave wedding photos) though! #suckitupcupcake

When we invaded the Westman Islands, it was was a several day stretch of quite possibly was the WORST weather they had experienced all year (hello, 60 mph gale force winds!)!  Seriously, it was soooo bad we had to take a different ferry route back to Iceland’s mainland the day following.  No joke, and folks, just as a reminder our teams style of shooting never ever shows the madness you encounter in a negative way… It just looks dreamy and epic despite heavy wind and rain!

A few of these Iceland elopement anniversary photographs are some of my favorite because of the story we created behind the scenes… You know, just hand in hand, trying to survive the crazy weather conditions in the Westman Islands storm, all while taking in the beauty of the famed “Elephant Rock,” do you see it?

The adventurous couples session concluded with some exploring of one of our new favorite Iceland wedding locations on Heimaey in the Westman Islands of Iceland.  Bring on the wind so fierce I couldn’t catch my breath, sideways rain, and fridged temperatures! #worthit

Caution: Sappy Personal Post Ahead.  The holidays always fill my heart with endless amounts of gratitude for situations that have happened, moments in time, and it’s a beautiful yet meaningful time to reflect and be with the ones you cherish most.  For those who have followed our blog since 2012, you know my history, my struggles, my growth both personally and professionally.  It’s been an incredible journey and today I can confidently say that I’m a wife to a man who is better than me and I am proud of (and love) it.

Davíð Geir Jónasson, looks at me the way all women want (and deserve) to be looked at by a man.  I’ve never laughed harder, never travelled farther around the world with anyone and still left smiling by the end of it.  To put it raw and frankly, I’m addicted to him. His energy, book to street smarts, risky wit, infinite positivity and the way he brings out the best in everyone he encounters.  He adventures at the same level as me (some might even say higher and I might agree).  Enough gush.  Go back HERE to read more about how we met (super GOOD story), our relationship and proposal.

But! Back to today’s topic: Meeting in Iceland to Having a Lofoten Islands Elopement Adventure.  We chose to elope.  Why?  It felt right for us.  Being an adventure wedding planner and photographer (and Davíð in the film industry), we look at wedding days way differently than most of the world.  Much like what my clients come to me for, we were looking for something DIFFERENT and a place that had enough beauty and adventure in it for us both.  Have you heard of the Lofoten Islands?  It’s a spectacular place in Northern Norway.

The shapes, the tones, the textures of the vivid mountains of the Lofoten Islands cannot be found anywhere else in the world.  They come chock full of mystery and unforgettable romance.  So come along with me today as I, my super talented friend (and colleague) Jean Smith and her brilliant cinematographer husband Travis Smith share with you the unbelievable documentation from our Lofoten Islands, Norway wedding day.

The winding roads of Norway, led us to one of the prettiest areas of the Lofoten Islands for our wedding adventure.

I’m a firm believer that even if you elope, you should still have gorgeous details to compliment your adventurous love story.  This also means I had to have a Norway wedding welcome bag for our photographer and cinematographer guests.  Having local treats (like chocolates, a guidebook, wool gloves, dried fish, etc) enhances the experience and makes people smile upon arrival!  Plus, um did you see the bag and the lunchbox?!  I’m still in cuteness overload!

Having an adventure wedding anywhere in the world, it’s a good idea to have two wedding dresses.  Mainly because you never know what the weather will be doing and one may look better better in rain or wind, etc.  Since I preach this every day to my adventure wedding clients, I actually planned 3 wedding dresses and 3 pairs of shoes/boots (and my husband brought two suits/shoes as well).

Fun Fact from our Lofoten Islands Elopement: Davíð handcrafted my destination wedding bouquet.  We actually filled up a suitcase full of flowers/ greens and this is in the end what my fresh flower bouquet looked like… Side Note: Having so many dresses, I actually had 3 wedding bouquets as well.  Having planned and photographed hundreds of weddings over the years, fresh flowers never withstand the adventure aspect of our weddings so it’s nice to have a backup or two that are fake, but real looking.  My favorite vendor who accomplishes this is Southern Girl Weddings.

Lofoten Islands Norway Elopement Tip: Leave superstition / tradition behind and get ready together.  It decreases the any stress you might have and gives you fun memories like these!

We scouted and chose our Lofoten Islands wedding locations very carefully because of the way the light falls on these magical mountains.  It falls fast, deep, and runs out quickly.  Each spot we chose not only had a meaning, but at each we held part of our Norway wedding ceremony.  Since we had already been “legally married” on paper in Iceland earlier, we could focus completely on each other, the meaning behind each part, and the adventure. First up was us reading our wedding vows.

We’ve moved mountains together, so naturally we have to dance around in front of them!

Entrance of dress #2: The beach was WAY too windy and the other dress would have looked lame!  Norway always provides a dreamy amount of wind for a wedding dress!

What Lofoten Islands Norway wedding would be without a token ceremony?  Davíð is not a fan of rings so we exchanged a watch (JS Watches Reykjavik) and a ring.

…and would a adventure wedding planner have a Lofoten Islands wedding ceremony without it being styled?  Nope!  Nordic Love is the inspiration on this setup.  Thousands of petals from my favorite folks at Flyboy Naturals.

We decided to incorporate our “first drink” together and have it be out of a Viking horn.  Champagne of course!

The day could not conclude without having a stylish dinner for two during our Lofoten Island elopement.  Our theme: Romance and Adventure Collide.

Words cannot properly express the emotions that stir when we watch this video (which is like everyday).  I strongly encourage you to find it in your budget to hire an adventure wedding photographer AND a cinematographer (not just a videographer) to forever document your love story.  Just do it.  It’ll pay dividends in happiness and forever newlywed status later.

I was the Iceland Wedding Planner and Photographer for a super cool couple from Chicago, Illinois.  It was raining that day in Iceland, so we executed our “Plan B” ceremony location, my favorite cave.  However, when we arrived we were greeted by a 200 person film crew for a upcoming Bollywood movie.  They were there with the famed actor’s, food trucks, gear trucks,  and tons of porta potties.

I’ll be honest, seeing that many people there, I panicked slightly.  Not because I wouldn’t be able to use the location (which never happens because we always get private permission and permits) but rather, I was thinking how off schedule this could potentially make our day (excuse the OCD part of me, lol)!  The couple had no idea that anything was out of the ordinary as I jumped out of the jeep and darted to the group to have a chat.  An easy 5 minutes later the entire crew was gone

Fast forward 12 hours and I was back at the hotel finishing up the table styling for the couples dreamy reception for two.  I grabbed a glass of wine and my computer to catch up on emails and sat down in the hotel lobby…  Completely enamored in my work I do not look up when I hear a man’s voice say, “Are you that 5 foot 3 inch wedding planner that kicked our entire crew out of the cave earlier today?”  I laughed and leaned around my computer to see who was so witty.  To my pleasant surprise, a 6 foot 7 inch  Icelandic Adonis was speaking to me.  My jaw dropped and that giddy smile still hasn’t left my face!

That night, I met a man who lives and breathes adventure just as I do (maybe even more) personally and professionally.  Allow me to introduce you to Davíð… He creates special effects for all of the big movies that come here to Iceland (you know like Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Interstellar, Noah, the list is endless) and has the incredible hobby of being on Iceland’s SAR team (Search and Rescue). ….yeah swoon swoon, right?!  From that moment on, we found ourselves inseparable.

Our third date was a 7 day adventure to Isle of Skye, where we went coasteering, hiked epic cliff lines, dined at small little cafes, and discovered super secret locales!

He didn’t even bat an eyelash when I suggested we spend a month in South America! Where we ventured through Chilean wine country, Rainforests, through epic fjords, and made our way down to the famed awe inspiring region of Patagonia!

Since Davíð and I met at the “top of the world” we thought it would be fun for us to ring in the New Year together at the bottom of the world in Ushuaia Argentina!

We spent several days camping (um yeah the only man on the planet that can get me to camp in a tent) and hiking the famed “W Trek” in the Torres Del Paine National Park.  Complete with glaciers, granite towers, and moments of mountaineering!

One of the most magical set of days we spent together was within the Los Glaciares National Park where we explored the Perito Moreno Glacier and the Fitz Roy Mountains!

One of my favorite hikes we have done together was in Norway doing the hike to Trolltunga. Have you ever been to Norway?

Back to the exciting news…

After exploring 7 countries; 40 cities; and over 30,000 miles together, I proposed! …and he said Yes!

…and we are planning a wedding in the Lofoten Islands for September 14-19th!

But that’s not all of the exciting news we have to share with you… There’s more!  We are also extremely happy to announce that we will be adding a new items to our menu of services… Drone Photography and Video for your amazing Iceland Weddings + Adventure Weddings beyond!

Are you excited?!  We are too!

…and today I write you from the “bottom of the world” in Ushuaia, Argentina.  The furthest most Southern city of the world.  I find it slightly ironic since my business first started at the token “top of the world” in the Nordic countries.  It seems only fitting I begin my best year yet here at the bottom!

As many of my weekly followers know, 2015 was a big year of changes for me personally and also professionally.  But taking a big bird’s eye view back over the last several years (and maybe you will to?), I sit for a moment, smile and am reminded at how different each year has been for me as well.  Different in gratitude, grace, in mission, and adventure.  I am addicted to it, crave it, live it daily, and breathe adventure every day in my life and in my career.  When those two things aligned, my life changed to purely positive.  I learned how to love, live in the moment, embrace my passions, found where there is a will there is always a way, and a renewed respect and admiration for people and cultures, I frankly didn’t know was possible.

I committed to myself after my divorce was finalized in January 2015, I very would very bravely pack up everything I own, put it in a storage unit, and leave the USA to travel for a year in order to bring my Adventure Wedding concept to life.  I did and I have absolutely no regrets (even after flipping a car in Galloway, Ireland) as I come to the close of 2015.  The things I have seen, tasted, and experienced, I could write for years on (and I will, so please follow Your Adventure Wedding).  The new offbeat locations I have brought into my destination wedding planning repertoire are unbelievable!  Did you see my travel schedule I posted?  That was just a simple taste as to what I have planned… if you know me, you know I get down and offbeat, not mainstream tourism!  My travels continue on into 2016 and I will continue to live out of only 3 suitcases and a purse =)  It’s a lifestyle I have come to love and embrace whole heartedly with all my being.

Additionally, I am incredibly thankful to the couples who trusted me in 2015 to plan and forever document their Iceland weddings and elopements (and locations beyond), it was so amazing to be a part of history with you!  No one can rock out rainy, snowy, and cloudy weddings with a smile, like you!  I have the best most hardcore clients ever, THANK YOU for being so badass!  …and to my fabulous couples upcoming in 2016 and 2017, you have challenged me and more importantly, trusted me to step it up a notch and plan some indescribably unique things in some incredible places, I heart you!!  THANK YOU and I look forward to making it the best year yet!!

Every year, must conclude with reliving some lovely moments in time, right?  Today, I’d like to share with you a few of our favorites from the 2015 Iceland wedding year (Note: We do not post the majority of our Iceland weddings or destination weddings on this blog because we respect the privacy of our high profile clients) but some of our clients love and allow us to share them with you, so let’s look back and delight in those today along with a few of my favorite travel photos!
