Hello to you Bride and Grooms to Be!

Welcome to Part 3 of 3 of our series on destination wedding invitations.

A few weeks ago, we featured the fun topic of Extravagant Destination Wedding Invitations and last week, we chatted about Creative Destination Wedding Invitations for Iceland Weddings that were of a moderate cost and added in few unique inclusions. Today, we are going to talk about the final level and option for destination wedding invitations: the whimsical kind!

One of the really wonderful things about having a wedding invitation that has minimal frills but still is fanciful, is that you save on you wedding budget. Who doesn’t love that?! Having no specific needs for elaborate inserts, visuals, extra envelopes, (etc.,) really decreases the costs that can quickly emerge as you design your local or destination wedding invitations.

I’ve peaked your curiosity you say? So you’re dying to know what is classified as a whimsical invitation design, I bet. According to us, it is an invitation that is vibrant in color, has a dreamy font, eloquent in statement and most of all reflects you as a couple! An invitation that makes your guests say, “Aww, how cute are they?! I cannot wait for their wedding!” We’re seeing a new trend emerge that takes a lighter and even humorous approach to the usual RSVP/Reply Card for weddings which add in some guest banter like inserting your own wedding “Mad Lib” for your guests to fill in (example below). That option may be something you’ll want to consider if you’re not head over heels about the typical reply cards.

The invitation does not need to be elaborate in fact; many guests appreciate the frankness of a modest destination wedding invitation rather than having the cutesy frill inclusions. They simply just want to know who, what, where, and when. Each to his own, right? I can appreciate all sides particularly when this side of the fence can be a significant Iceland wedding budget saver. Especially if it means you can allocate those funds toward other things like having an awesome destination wedding planner and a husband and wife Iceland wedding photography team! =)

To give you a real wedding in Iceland example, one of our favorite couples for 2014 made the unique decision to email their wedding invitations to their 50+ guests. They plan to have each guest respond via their fun wedding website (Think: Iceland destination wedding RSVP). This could easily be a savings of $200+ USD depending on how large your guest list is. So now I’m guessing the big question you have is how do you execute this idea properly? Good question!

Here’s our advice on the steps to a flawless destination wedding invitation timeline:

First, set a wedding date that is more than 10 months before your desired date. If you have done so, make sure you send out Iceland Save-the-Dates several months before so your guests know to reserve that time period ahead of time (emailing this is an option too!). But giving everyone an opportunity to plan/save ahead time is proper wedding etiquette.

Second, know your vision for your wedding day… do you want it to be soft and sweet, bold and adventurous, or an in between neutral mix? Figuring this out will allow you to choose colors and the vibe your invitation will exude to your Iceland wedding guests.

Narrow down what you would like to include with your destination wedding invitation (see last week’s post here on what is usually included). [Invitation wording can be tricky but don’t fret; we’ll have a future blog post guiding you on this subject!]

Have your awesome Iceland Wedding Planner design/find/present to you unique options for your wedding Iceland wedding invite.

Discuss with your fiancé(e) the pros, cons, and feel of each option. Which option reflects the two of you and your wedding style best? How do you think your guests will react?

{If printing} Decide on your favorite and get them ordered! (Iceland Wedding Planner Tip: Order 8+ months before your big day to avoid rush charges).

{Step by Step Directions: If Emailing Your Wedding Invitation}

1. Create a wedding only email address that will be used strictly to catch all of your Iceland wedding guest RSVP’s (IE, EmandPenIceland20XX@gmail.com). This makes life more organized if your guest list is larger than 10 people.

2. Setup an RSVP page on your wedding website and also input your meal choices if possible (so you do not need to collect this information separately). Note: If having an Iceland Wedding Welcome Dinner (Iceland Wedding Rehearsal Dinner), you may also want to have folks RSVP at that time as well. Or else send another RSVP for that event 3-4 months before.

3. Collect everyone’s email addresses (if you haven’t yet).

4. Plan to email the invitation ~8-12 months before your wedding date and give your guests 2.5 months to acknowledge and reply. For instance, if getting married in Iceland in October 2014 you would want to send out your wedding invitations no later than November 2013 and ask for your guests for the favor of their reply by February 1st 2014 (8-9 months before) or sooner.

Two options on how to approach actually emailing the wedding invite:

Blind Copy (BCC) your guests in a mass email wedding invitation.

Personalize to each guest (our recommendation to you). If personalizing, you should formally invite your guests. For instance, address by saying, “Ms./Mr. & Guest” or “Mr. & Mrs. Christopher Peters.” Wedding invitations are formal so it is important to still convey that even through an email.

5. About 3 weeks before your requested RSVP date, plan to send out a follow up email gently reminding your Iceland destination wedding guests about finalizing their decision. Usually when people get that kind reminder they will jump into gear to request time off, book flights, reserve a room at your Iceland wedding host hotel, and browse around your wedding website for your pre/post wedding itinerary.

6. Any stragglers that have not responded two weeks past your requested response date I would email them a personal little note checking in to make sure they received the email invitation and were able to open it. That simple, leave the ball in their court with no pressure and if more time passes (another 2 weeks) and no response call them. Whoever is closer to the friend or family member reach out to them individually and understand what might be keeping them from replying. Is it a timing issue, money, travel fear, inexperience, etc? See what you can do to help get them there. …and if nothing, do not worry yourself over it, you tried your best to accommodate their situation.

7. At the 90, 60, 30 day countdown to your wedding day in Iceland send an email or write a blog post about your excitement and share your activity itinerary with your guests.

8. If you’re a super planner like we were, calling your guests 15 days before to ask them if they had any questions is a really sweet gesture especially to those who do not travel all the time. That call will give them confidence! [Personal Experience: The majority Ann’s family members had never traveled outside of the Midwest, so many of them had anxiety over traveling to Iceland. That phone call days before gave them the boost they needed to put on their “adventurous game face.”]

9. Remind your guests it’s a good idea to bring the wedding invitation, a copy of their passport (along with the real thing), and travel itinerary so that they can quickly get through customs with no issues. Feel free to also share with them our previous blog post on what to pack as an Iceland wedding guest here.

Hopefully you found the above a pretty straightforward timeline on how to execute your destination wedding invitations. Below, you’ll find some gorgeously fun examples of some whimsical Iceland destination wedding invitations. We’d like to thank Brian & Tiffany for allowing us to share some of their Iceland wedding invitation options they were considering and Paisley & Robert as well! Thank you! Lastly, we’d like to give our compliments to the two gorgeous vendors that worked with us on some of these design elements within the invitations below: Thank you May and Belle and Wedding Chicks! Check them out! [As a side note about May and Belle: She is a talented designer from Australia who creates map related stylish wall art and a few are geared specifically for weddings, so fun! She so beautifully created the Iceland heart map used in Paisley & Robert’s Vik Beach wedding invitation you see below].

In case you’re finding this blog post at the end of this series; feel free to go back to our previous posts for additional Iceland wedding inspiration:

Hello Darling Brides-to-Be!

Outside of holding our Iceland wedding ceremony at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of my favorite “gives me goose bumps” moments from our Iceland wedding planning was arranging my husband, Chris’s day of wedding gift.

So many of you might be scratching your head right now wondering what I mean… So you ask, “Ann, what is a day of gift?” A day of gift goes both ways: Bride surprises her soon to be and groom surprises the bride with a gift, showing the enthusiasm and anticipation of their wedding day. This can be simplistic or elaborate; it’s all in how you are as a couple. I’ll paint a picture for you on how we planned and exchanged our wedding day of gifts in Iceland so you may understand better.

Chris and I in a nutshell are “Type A” personalities in case you haven’t figured that out yet. We are crazy detailed, thrive on adventure and we really seek it out in our travels and everyday life. Fun fact: This is exactly why our Photos by Miss Ann tagline was coined years ago as, “Thriving on Adventure and Love…” As cliché as it sounds, we truly do live life with no regrets and strive each day to do so as we build our personal lives together and individually, our businesses, and our bucket lists. That being said, buying gifts for each other is really hard! Neither of us wears jewelry nor have a burning desire for a specific tangible good, but we do both enjoy a challenge that is near to impossible. So when we talked about whether or not we would exchange “day of gifts” on our wedding day in Iceland, we both agreed it would be fun and then swapped sneaky smiles! Our marvelous challenge for Iceland wedding day of gifts commenced!

I racked my brain for a few days on what sort of everlasting sweet gift I could give Chris that could forever hold an impression on our marriage, make him tear up, and then it came to me! One of our all-time favorite movies on the planet is “Somewhere in Time,” (circa 1980). It’s a mushy time traveling film with Jayne Seymour and Christopher Reeve that is about two soul mates finding each other despite there being generations of time between them. The catalyst of the time travel is a pocket watch from the early 1900’s and that simple element ignited my memory! Chris had inherited one from his great grandfather decades ago, that he had always talked about getting restored to its original glory, just never had. It was in really bad shape i.e., missing glass, hands, internal components, and needed heavy refinishing, so it took several months for the clock shop to find parts.

A week before we were leaving for our Iceland destination wedding, I picked up the pocket watch gift and was in total awe. My gift to Chris was going to be time…Why? Time is something we all run short on when we fall in love. It seems like once we say, “Yes!” to “Will you marry me?” life gets jammed on the fast forward button and goes faster than we wish. I think as couples in love, we forget to keep “dating” each other and do not always savor those small moments in the midst of all those big upcoming life moments. Does that make sense? Truthfully, I am not a woman of many emotions, but seeing and holding that watch, knowing what it represents, and then putting it inside the engraved box, immediately brought tears to my eyes. The outside of the box was engraved simply with, “Today, I promise to love you until the end of time.” There was no way I could have chosen a better wedding gift for him, it was truly priceless. To top it off, I did add a super sweet card to his wedding day of gift that I had planned to hide in his tux pocket that playfully said, “I cannot wait to see your smile down the aisle!” I packed everything in my polka dot carry on that night and did not even think about that he was going to give me a gift too!

Fast-forward to barely a week later, we had made it to Iceland, got our marriage license, checked out our wedding ceremony location at Seljalandsfoss, saw some rainbows at Skogafoss, and ran around Vik Beach just to make sure all three were our final choices for the following wedding day adventure. After we finished, all of our to-do’s and were awaiting the start time of our Iceland wedding welcome dinner. Chris suggested then, that this would probably be the last quite moment we would share together before the hustle and bustle of the wedding weekend had begun. We decided to give each other our wedding day of gifts the evening before our wedding day. I grabbed my special gift to him and gleamed with excitement as I handed it to him. Chris gave me a curious look but still had no idea as he unwrapped the gift and read the outside of the special box. Once he opened the box and saw his grandfather’s watch in its pristine glory, he instantly got choked up and shed a few tears even! <Success! Bridal happy dance!>

After a few minutes he collected himself and told me to close my eyes <Eeeeek, I hate surprises, grrrr!> it was the longest 5 minutes ever! I heard him fumbling around but didn’t really realize what he was doing until he said, “Open!” Chris had spent months tirelessly building Photos by Miss Ann a new website from scratch, no templates, no predesigns, only him and the world of coding! How incredibly thoughtful and such a unique surprise for him to give me! All those months before our Iceland destination wedding, I had just thought he had been gaming on his computer until the wee hours of the night (Ahem, while I Iceland wedding planned, LOL) and really he had been doing a labor of love for my photography business! <3

Chris and I dislike traditional things for the most part, but one thing in our wedding planning we did keep was ensuring he did not see me in my wedding dress until I walked down the aisle to him. So after breakfast the morning of our Iceland wedding at Seljalandsfoss, we parted ways. The really sweet thing was that we had saved exchanging cards until the morning of when we were both getting ready at Hotel Ranga. I was getting my Iceland wedding dress on in the Royal Honeymoon Suite with my maid of honor and Chris was getting ready in another room with his best man. Reading his card once I had my Iceland wedding dress on made it even more real and made me blaze with even more excitement! Chris went to put his antique pocket watch in his inside tux pocket and was surprised to find my card while he and the rest of our guests loaded the bus for our surprise Iceland wedding ceremony location: Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. Sharing our Iceland wedding gift moment with Chris, will be forever be that “somewhere in time” moment for us!

In our opinion, day of gifts set the tone of the wedding weekend or wedding day. Every bride wants her groom completely enamored with her on their destination wedding weekend especially in Iceland! This little detail of gift giving before your wedding day expresses the appreciation you have for each other and exciting captivation you both have for saying “I do!” that day. We’d love to share with you some ideas for your day of gift to your soon-to-be:

Day of Gift Ideas for the Bride:

A Heartfelt Card.

Red Roses or her favorite flower!

Diamond earrings or her birth stone (whichever she may prefer).

A Bracelet or Necklace (ladies do not feel obligated to wear it on your wedding day).

An item to complete your home (Example, A small bistro set for the porch or backyard to have dinner or coffee on together).

Book an exclusive dinner for your Honeymoon (Example: Like what we did on our honeymoon at the Ayana Resort in Bali Indonesia: Pesta Lobster dinner on their private jetty).

Something from Tiffany & Co.

A sweet Souvenir from the destination wedding location you have chosen (maybe something that goes along with an inside joke you guys have?).

Have the wedding night suite furnished before your arrival with a rose petal pathway, champagne, and fresh fruit (all the fabulous hotels we work with in Iceland offer this as an add on)!

Day of Gift Ideas for the Groom:

A Heartfelt Card.

A Basket of His Favorite Things.

A Watch (Feel free to totally steal our pocket watch idea- just make sure you have your Iceland wedding photographer take a photo!)

Book a surprise adventurous activity for your awesome honeymoon!

That “must have” electronic he has been eying.

An item to complete your home or to support his favorite hobby (Example, A workbench for him to build projects on).

A World Map of your Travels Together (past, present, and future)! This was actually Chris’s first gift he ever gave me. Three years later, we still love plotting our travels on it, so much fun!

Have a sweet saying engraved on the inside of his wedding ring. (Ideas: “Forever,” “Better Together,” “Fire & Ice,” “A Perfect Fit,” “Remember When…” “I Choose You, Every Day,” “Love Never Fails”).

If you’re having a destination wedding in Iceland and the wedding gift is too big, bulky, isn’t tangible to bring, it’s totally okay to print out a picture of your gifted item, put it in a small box, and wrap it for him/her to open. In the end, it’s all about the thought and adding to the excitement of your wedding day! We hope this blog post featuring our destination wedding in Iceland tip: “Day of Gift” has encouraged you and your soon-to-be to exchange special wedding day gifts!

Epically Yours as Iceland Wedding Photographers and Planners,

As our newlywed status comes to a close, Chris and I spent a long weekend celebrating but at the same time, reflecting. This last year has truly been an adventurous whirlwind. I’m not sure where the time has gone! It seriously seems like only a few months ago we were in front of Seljalandsfoss waterfall having our Iceland wedding and saying our wedding vows. Nearly a year later, we are now planning Iceland weddings for similar couples like ourselves who want their wedding day to not only be a elegant affair but a lifetime adventure to remember. We could not be more excited for them and cannot wait to photograph their gorgeous events!

Many of you have been curious as to how Chris and I went from dating in Michigan to being married in Iceland… so here you go ladies! Our relationship adventures went something like this:

We met in September of 2009.

Rang in 2010 in Los Cabos, Mexico (woohoo first vacation together!).

Had the merging of friends at an amazing ski trip to Banff, Alberta Canada in February 2010.

Photographed a fabulous destination wedding (our first together) in Vieques, Puerto Rico in March of 2010.

Found our way to several coasts and back photographing destination weddings and doing lots of high altitude hiking in Colorado (Yes I always keep a dress in my hiking bag for just such a photo occasion. After all, we’re wedding photographers, there is always an amazing locale nearby!).

We learned new things together like how to race at Bridgestone Racing Academy in Pontypool, Ontario, to scuba dive, to fence, I celebrated my 500 skydive and Chris tried his first (Yes that is totally camera gear mounted to my helmet. Check out why I skydive here).

May 2011, we moved in together! Settled in a super cute 1920’s home in downtown Plymouth, Michigan. See one of our photos from our 1920’s styled session here.

Ann went on a trip to Jeju Island, South Korea while Chris went engagement ring shopping.

Engaged: We took a trip to Koloa, Hawaii (island of Kauai) in October of 2011 to photograph a gorgeous Kauai destination wedding. We added a few days before to do some hiking, scuba diving, and an incredible biplane tour of the island… Through all of those awesome events I was totally anticipating a marriage proposal and nothing! I’ll be honest, I ransacked all we brought trying to find any indication on whether or not he was going to propose (who’s with me ladies, lol?!). A night or two later we were watching the sunset with a bottle of champagne on our private beach and he asked me to marry him. It turns out sneaky Chris had hidden my Tiffany Ribbon Ring in a box of thin mint girl scout cookies in the fridge, something I would never ever go near! Alas, he knows me all to well =) See one of our destination engagement photos from that weekend here.

We brainstormed on wedding locations (see our blog post here).

From October 2011 to March 2012 we planned our Iceland Destination Wedding (we’re super planners so 5 months was doable, we would not suggest such a short timeline for anyone else). We settled on a Iceland waterfall for our wedding ceremony and Hotel Ranga for our wedding reception location.

On Wednesday, April 11th 2012, everyone we love and adore was getting ready to fly to Iceland that day for our adventurous destination wedding. Unfortunately that morning, I received the unexpected phone call that my grandmother, Iren Soltesz had passed away. Heartbreaking news to receive and deal with days before our wedding day.

Saturday, April 14th 2012, we were married at the exquisite Seljalandsfoss waterfall and held an incredible wedding day adventure for our guests. Our Iceland wedding day timeline can be found on our previous blog post, here. My grandma even brought us rainbows throughout our week trip through Iceland =)

October 2012, we made the move to focus our Photos by Miss Ann business on Iceland wedding planning and Iceland wedding photography. We felt that after all of our Iceland wedding planning trials and tribulations, Iceland needed a more visible wedding industry and we wanted to be at the front of this exciting adventure to help future brides and grooms!

November 2012, we honeymooned in Bali, Indonesia. See our Bali honeymoon photos on our previous blog post, here.

Our Favorite Things: Our bengal cat Oliver, the 1920’s, extreme sports, being silly (yes, it totally happened!), British cars (Chris), polka dots (Ann), champagne, bad horror movies, mountains, unique antiques, destination wedding photography, and Iceland!

In celebration of our first anniversary, Chris and I decided to forever pause the occasion with an Iceland inspired wedding anniversary portrait session! It was a whole 18 degrees when we ventured out into some gorgeous caves and waterfalls to capture these Iceland inspired couples portraits. We also spent 30 minutes of our time during that weekend to renew our wedding vows in front of another pretty waterfall! After all, when you spend the time to write your own wedding vows, I am a firm believer they should be said again each year on your anniversary. It truly brings back the euphoric feeling of newly wedded bliss! Anyhow, we hope you enjoy our photos as much as we did taking them!

Now that you are up to speed on us, what is your love story? Are you dying to plan a wedding day in Iceland? If so, please contact us to understand why Photos by Miss Ann / Iceland Wedding Planner, would be a fabulous asset to your Iceland destination wedding day!

Lots of smiles from the not-so-newlyweds, Ann & Chris Peters

Enough about us! Back to our wonderful topic today: Iceland Destination Wedding Etiquette

Destination weddings are tricky and proper etiquette for all involved is important. Today, I am going to debunk some of the most common questions surrounding destination weddings in general and specifically Iceland wedding planning etiquette as well!

1. Save the Dates: Are they needed? When do you send?

a. Once you are engaged, picked a wedding state/country location, and are set on a wedding date it’s time to send out “Save the Dates!” If planning a destination wedding, these are typically sent out 8 months or more before the wedding date. You want to give your guests as much notice as possible to begin saving or planning their destination wedding itinerary. We were engaged in Kauai Hawaii in October 2012 and set our wedding date for April 2012. We decided on a short window for planning because we either had to get married before our high wedding season or after because we are wedding photographers in Plymouth Michigan, in Iceland and beyond. That left either getting married in April 2012, November 2012, or April 2013. We settled on April 2012 and planning in less than 6 months does not require formal save the dates.

2. Do you invite the masses to your destination wedding?

a. Personal preference. But I will give you a fabulous example! When planning our Iceland destination wedding my husband and I are both only children with small family’s so we decided to look at it like this… Invite all immediate and extended family, all close friends we have kept in contact with over the last 5 years, our current or previous bosses, and selective workplace friends. We ended up sending out 100 Iceland wedding invitations and ended up with 36 RSVP’s saying yes!

3. If you are also having a local reception who do you invite?

a. You must extend the invite to anyone who declined your destination wedding invite. If you choose to invite additional people you should probably have your Iceland wedding photos available for their review. That way, they feel somewhat included in your wedding day as well.

4. Destination Wedding Invitations: When to send?

a. Invitations for destination weddings should be mailed at a minimum of 4 months away from the wedding date. This provides the guests with ample time to decide, request vacation, book flights, accommodations, and plan Iceland adventures. It is also proper to give your guests 40 days to RSVP. Another real life Iceland wedding day example: We sent our Iceland wedding invitations out on November 15th and gave our guests until January 9th to respond which was ~50 days to respond.

b. Why ask guests to RSVP early?

a. By having all of our RSVP’s back by January 9th we could chase down any folks who did not respond. Having our guests RSVP 3 months before allowed us to begin finalizing our counts for our wedding plans as far as Iceland wedding ceremony location, Iceland wedding transportation logistics for a group of 40, champagne toast at Vik Beach, ordering our Iceland wedding flowers, our Iceland wedding linens, Iceland wedding Welcome Dinner, Hotel Ranga Wedding 5 Course Wedding Meal, and our post wedding itinerary for our guests.

5. Does the traditional rules of who pays for what still apply?

a. Sometimes, if planning a destination wedding in the United States I have seen the traditional road of groom’s parents paying for the “rehearsal dinner” and the wedding day alcohol while the bride’s parents or simply the bride and groom are responsible for the rest. But if international, more often than not, I have seen the bride and groom be responsible for the costs. So depending on your situation it is up to you! I strongly encourage you to contact us to help you plan your Iceland destination wedding budget.

6. Do you pay for your guest’s accommodations?

a. It’s interesting on how destination weddings have developed. 8 years ago when destination weddings became popular, that was the protocol. You hosted your guests from the moment they arrived until they left. Your guests were there for you and not so much the vacation. But now that the industry markets dictate destination weddings as a vacation so there is less pressure financially on the bride and groom. But, I will say, if you can afford to comp your guests the night of the wedding, then do it. If it’s not in doable then at least take the time to negotiate a group rate with your host hotel.

7. Should you prepare your guests on how much they may spend on your destination wedding?

a. Yes! …and the perfect place to do this diplomatically is on your wedding website. Industry average says that guests should be prepared to spend between $700-1200 per person on a destination wedding. This cost would include flight, accommodations, average of planned activities, rough estimates for food, and transportation. Hire us as your planner and photographer to help you properly budget plan!

Photos by Miss Ann (aka, Iceland Wedding Planner) also provides this budget and activity planning piece in all of our Iceland Wedding packages so please contact us for more information!

8. Do you create a wedding website?

a. Yes, yes, yes! If you have not yet do so now! Having a wedding website for your destination wedding gives you a voice to your guests (without badgering them). It provides them tools to RSVP, book their flight, reserve their housing accommodations, take advantage of booking discounts, review your Iceland wedding itinerary, see activity suggestions, book Iceland transportation, and understand why you chose Iceland as your destination wedding locale!

It also provides space for you to tell your love story, post engagement photos, introduce your wedding party, post information on gift registries, bridal shower, post your invitation, wedding menu, and wedding day flow. Super awesome tool to use as you plan as well! Photos by Miss Ann includes this service as one of the Iceland Wedding Planning agenda items too so feel free to contact us!

9. Welcome Dinner versus Rehearsal Dinner, do you do one? Which do you choose?

a. Over the past few years I have been witness to the transition from traditional wedding rehearsal dinners to destination welcome dinners. The reason: Many destination weddings have fewer people standing up in the bridal party’s which requires very little day before organization. So in this case referring to a day before dinner gathering your guests would be called a “Wedding Welcome Dinner.”

Real life wedding example: My husband and I held our destination wedding in Iceland and decided to kick off our wedding weekend in Iceland with a welcome dinner at Hotel Ranga for our 36 guests. We also arranged for our guests to stay 2 nights at Hotel Ranga so they could relax, enjoy the countryside, and have the opportunity to be in the midst of the Northern Lights. Having kept our Iceland wedding ceremony location of Seljalandsfoss waterfall a complete surprise to our guests, we could not go to the site to do a “rehearsal.” So when it was time for a pre-wedding day walk through we had our official meet us at the hotel to review our wedding ceremony, did a quick walk through with our maid of honor, best man, parents, and 4 good friends that were reading “The Art of Marriage” by Wilfred A. Peterson. 7pm came and it was time to welcome our guests to begin their Iceland wedding adventure with us! There was a delicious 3 course meal (complete with Skyr Cake!), music, toasts, speeches, tons of laughter, excitement, a birthday celebrated, and destination welcome bags passed out!

10. Gifts for Destination Weddings?

a. Our personal vote is no gifts for destination weddings. You simply request the presence of your guests. Real Life Wedding Example: We were an established couple and felt we did not need anything to “jump start our marriage” and felt it was more important to share in the adventure of Iceland with our guests so we stated a section on our website for gifts that said, “Your presence at our Iceland Wedding is the best gift you could give us.” …and really it was.

Faux Pas: Never ever send out a registry insert to your wedding invitation (or state on the invitation) on where you are registered. If anything state it on your wedding website (believe me word will spread) or guests will go to all the typical spots and look up your names and hope for a registry.

Alternative Destination Gift Registry Ideas: Honeymoon Wishes Registry, Wanderlust Registry, Upon Our Star, or the I Do Foundation (charity donations).

Bridal Showers and Bachelorette Parties are the exception to these rules. So if you’re having one, register.

11. Are Wedding Announcements Needed?

a. Yes! If you’re having a local reception they are absolutely needed. It is also proper to send to any guest who was unable to attend the destination wedding. The ideal situation is to have photos from the wedding on the card and send them out within 3 weeks of arriving home from your destination wedding. Your Iceland Destination Wedding Photographer can design gorgeous cards for you or if you have purchased your digital files you can do so on your own as well! That way if you are also holding a local reception guests will feel more connected to your wedding day by seeing your Iceland wedding photos.

12. Destination weddings and bridal party attendants… what to do?

a. Don’t worry there are no hard and fast rules to this one. Do not feel obligated to choose your sister if you’re not close or that cousin you barely talk to. The really amazing thing about destination weddings is they are truly about the couple! Because they are also smaller in attendance (industry average being 60 guests) the couple has the right to choose less! We are seeing more often than not the bride & groom just choosing a maid of honor and a best man to stand calmly (lol, yes I said it!) beside them. Our real life Iceland destination wedding example: My husband and I are luckily only children (lol, I said that too!), have small extended families, and close-knit group of friends from around the world. So realistically we could not honor each set of friends with being in our wedding party so we chose to honor them in other ways at the Iceland wedding ceremony and also during the wedding weekend.

13. Do you invite your wedding photographers to your day wedding welcome dinner or wedding rehearsal festivities?

a. Yes! It is nice for you two, your families, and to have your guests become comfortable with them. It is also a great time for them to get acclimated to the scenery, locations, lighting, and your expectations ahead of time.

Plus, if they are rock star destination wedding photographers, chances are they will candidly photograph the event for free too in gratitude to you treating them so kindly as a guest. Or at least that is what Photos by Miss Ann does for all of our destination couples =) Remember our key to photographing destination weddings is we need time with you! Priceless moments should be captured professionally!

14. Do you tip your destination wedding vendors?

a. In Europe, it is not expected because typically the prices are higher to include, but it is still appreciated for exceptional service. In any sort of country that is deemed developing or third world tipping is expected. Canada and US it is not expected but if you had exceptional service the day of, feel free to! But do be careful with vendors who still have yet to provide you a finished product to you as you may wish you hadn’t!

We had this specific experience happen to us with our hired destination photographers from Toronto, Ontario. We felt the day of they were easy to work with and we had hoped they were behind the scenes capturing all of our details professionally- so we tipped them over $300 USD, in good faith. We loved our Iceland engagement session but not our wedding photos. Unfortunately, we seriously regretted our generous decision as we found some serious issues upon the arrival of our high resolution images weeks later. There were many technical flaws like blatant gear malfunctions, missed moments despite there being two of them, many of details we spent so much time planning were not captured, and we found the husband and wife duo to be very condescending in character to deal with after the fact.

Sadly, because of the negligence of our hired destination wedding photographers, my husband and I have had to spend the last year of our newly wedded bliss fixing their technical mistakes, recreating our missed wedding moments, retaking Iceland wedding portraits, and reconstructing our own Iceland wedding details professionally. All that being said, Chris and I understand even more so how important is for you to choose the right Iceland wedding photographer who will amazing to work with from beginning to end. So please check out Photos by Miss Ann to see how we would be an asset to your Iceland destination wedding planning!

15. How to handle sensitive family issues:

a. Divorced parents? Extended family not cordial to each other? A riff between in-laws? Do not fret! Knowledge the issue before the wedding and make it clear to all involved you will accommodate to the best of your ability to ensure no awkward moments. Also make it clear the night before your wedding day everyone involved is to be as cordial to each other as possible and drama free. Remind them the day is about you and your fiancé saying “I do” and not the ongoing family issues. This problem could be as simply solved as having assigned seating at your dinners (name cards strategically placed can be professionally made with Pixels to Paper or personally made).

Another thought would be to brief your wedding vendors on the issue. They may be an aid in diffusing the situation. I know as a Iceland wedding planner and owning Photos by Miss Ann, we encounter almost 1 sensitive issue per wedding weekend. It’s a delicate balance and the more information your wedding planner or wedding photographer has on the issue the more equipped they are to handle it and restructure the situation if needed.

Our real wedding example of this follows to provide you a better visual: My gorgeous Hungarian Grandmother, Iren Soltesz had passed away the morning we were all flying to Iceland so it was a very emotional time for all of us before, during, and after our Aril 2012 wedding day in Iceland. All of my family was shocked and a few were debating on whether or not to make the journey from Ohio-Toronto-Iceland. This news also hit my mother especially hard as we were getting ready to leave that morning. Bitter sweet that she did not have time to properly mourn her mother but had to focus on celebrating her only daughter’s wedding day. It was tough for all involved to not have the proper time to grieve the loss of a loved one and focus on celebrate the joining of two others lives. My Grandmother’s funeral was postponed until we all arrived home 7-10 days later which caused much angst across our family. We maintained a positive approach every step of the way. We also strategically placed our guests at both our Iceland wedding ceremony at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, our wedding welcome dinner and Iceland wedding reception at Hotel Ranga to ensure all negative emotions would be avoided between family members. We also had memorial roses added to be a beautiful representation of our grandparents who passed before our special day could arrive.

Phew! A lot of information, I know =) Remember, this is just our two cents. We’ve been there and this is our personal opinion on how things should work but keep in mind, we also photograph and experience weddings as our full time job so we know that side of it too! Feel free to contact us for more information on how we can help make your day flawless in Iceland wedding planning and Iceland wedding photography!
