Meeting Dave and Katie for the first time I couldn’t help but SMILE. Their energy was contagious and they beamed with excitement to begin a super awesome offbeat couples portrait session in Iceland! Then funnest part: Katie had no idea where we were going! Dave just simply said they had never had professional photos taken, Iceland was the perfect opportunity and that as soon as they landed from their flight they would embark on a surprise adventure.

We headed south from Reykjavik and found our way to a secret canyon! Even though Iceland this year has had the MILDEST winter ever on record, we were lucky enough to have a DREAMY snowy Iceland couple’s adventurous portrait session! …little did Katie know she was moments away from Dave proposing too! The best adventures begin with curiosity.

Firm believers in that statement, Rachel and John reached out to us, days after the proposal. They were crazy excited to book their Iceland engagement session in this stunning landscape. They then embarked on a super fun photo adventure with us in our 4×4, totally ready to hike to some offbeat locations for amazing views and incredible photo ops!

These two hiked to a secret little waterfall that morning and stole oh-so many kisses along the way!

Swoon! That moment where the path takes you to rainbow and a mini waterfall you can walk behind! ?

We had the rare kind of adventurous day that blue skies were abound! It was simply incredible!

Iceland Engagement Session: Öxarárfoss Waterfall (Thingvellir National Park Pre Wedding Session)

In the fall of 2013, Tara and Landon emailed us and simply said, “Looking to elope in Iceland this coming summer –just the two of us, no big show, and no guests. But we need somewhere spectacular, like a waterfall, a glacier, or the top of a mountain. We’re adventurous, so anywhere is an option for us.”

Thus it began! My mind starting reeling! In case you missed our last post sharing their wonderful Iceland wedding video, feel free to go back here and delight in it. Fun Facts: Tara and Landon are from Calgary, Alberta Canada and they are both Geologists by trade. They are enthralled with earthy matters, the textures, tones, and history that has made Iceland evolve. When we were brainstorming on Iceland pre wedding locations for their Iceland engagement session we kept coming back to most historic landscapes in Iceland, Thingvellir National Park.

Luckily Iceland’s 5 day rain stent didn’t even phase us! Landon and Tara embraced the unruly weather by donning Icelandic sweaters, hats, and hiking boots to ensure the adventure level was at it’s max =) Our favorite kind of clients! During their e-session at Öxarárfoss Waterfall they tested their limits by venturing out onto cliff edges, enduring waterfall spray, hoping marshy islands, and running hand in hand around the Iceland tectonic plates (European and North American tectonic plates).

It was a magical evening and proves how exciting an Iceland e-session can be, even in the rain. They held their Iceland destination wedding the next day on the top of famed Mýrdalsjökull Glacier which is on the rim of the Katla Volcano… Woohoo! Iceland Engagement Session | ION Hotel Wedding Photographer

One word describes February in Iceland… Audacious. The landscape is bold, unrestrained and at times challenging. I personally found this out the hard way last week. Good story and amazing images that I’ll save to share on future post… For now, I’ll simply say that the F-Roads (Highland Roads) in Iceland are no joke even in a 4×4 and that the Iceland Search and Rescue Team are my personal heroes! =)

In February the Icelandic landscape is often covered with winter snow, and the temperatures hover around freezing. At times it may feel colder due to the high winds. The bright side to this time of year though is the Northern Lights can be abound on clear nights. The ION Luxury Adventure Hotel is one of the best locations in Iceland to watch an Aurora Borealis show because of low light pollution and the primo view in the Northern Lights Bar. As you may remember from our previous Iceland wedding location post here on the ION Hotel, the bar has floor to ceiling windows that allow their guests to be immersed into the landscape of Iceland very easily on cold winter nights.

Several months ago, we started to plan an idyllic Iceland elopement for a couple that requested the ION be their wedding host hotel… Yippee! Our Singapore couple, Farid and Vanessa, chose Iceland in search of unique sights and the Northern Lights for their destination wedding adventure. Living where the average temperature year round is 86°F (30°C), they very bravely embraced the challenging Iceland winter conditions and outdoor adventures with a smile. Iceland Wedding Planner, created a fabulous wedding week itinerary for them which included items like a private visit to the Blue Lagoon, dog sledding, glacier hiking, waterfall hunting, and a full wedding day adventure from sunrise to sunset.

To kick off Vanessa and Farid’s wedding adventures the evening before the big day; we photographed them at dusk around the ION Luxury Adventure Hotel. Having their engagement session in Iceland created an earthy rustic, experience. The moss and snow covered lava fields, geothermal steam, winding roads and Mount Hengill all served as fantastic backdrops for us. Oh my, was it mystifyingly romantic!
