Plan B’s have more often than not been my favorite routes for a wedding day in Iceland! Because weather often wins in Iceland and you nimbly (and humbly) adjust yourself to a “plan b” or at times, even “plan c.” This is the reality of choosing a tiny island in the North Atlantic to get married. Although Iceland is chock-full of appealing natural wonders, those beautiful yet dramatic places were created by the unruly weather, so let’s be grateful for it! It’s like the first step to Iceland wedding planning… accepting whatever the weather will do. If you’re a die-hard adventurer this shouldn’t be a problem for you. Do you remember how some of our previous clients have owned their rainy Iceland wedding days like rock-stars? Take notes.

No matter the time of year here in Iceland, you will find the weather challenging you. This year, we had one of the mildest winters on record that barely closed the Southern mountain pass roads. But this past spring and summer, there was at least 5-8 times I know of where the mountain pass between Reykjavik / Selfoss and then again between Dyrholaey / Vik had been closed for extreme wind and sand storms.

One of my all-time favorite couples from Canada, Michelle and Brent experienced Iceland’s unruly weather wrath first hand, but they dominated it like seasoned champs! Here’s the Story: Days before their lovely June wedding day, our Iceland Wedding Planner and super jeep team carefully analyzed the weather and all plan b routes (Tip: Please do not look at Weather.com, rather look at Belgingur.is as that is the more realistic weather forecast you can look to here in Iceland). There was a huge sand / wind storm that was not going to subside in Southern Iceland and with it was bringing 30-40 km/s (aka 60-90 mph) gale force winds, no joke from Seljalandsfoss to Hofn. Okay, so I like wind for Iceland wedding photos. But when you add sand in there sandblasting your the paint of off of your truck, onto your face, and into your eyeballs… That’s another thing and it becomes an awfully uncomfortable situation.

The Big Problem: Our host hotel in Hella Iceland. Our Iceland wedding locations were planned to be all east of Vik. Which means the mountain pass between would be (or may) close either before we could pass or would not allow us to go back west. Meaning, if we are able to cross, then the weather gets worse and they close it we would not be able to get back to the hotel (and the Iceland Road Authority does not care if we need to get back there at the end of the day, they need to close it to keep people safe). Sand and wind storms are not stellar to hang out in for a 12+ hour adventure wedding, so we presented some stellar “plan b” options to Michelle and Brent and they trusted us to execute the new flawless plan for their Iceland wedding day.

But before I go further with sharing, allow me to center us back to the beautiful subjects of this post: Michelle + Brent

I met them just one 1 week after Brent proposed in Austria to begin Iceland wedding planning with them. Ohhh and he didn’t just “propose” in Austria folks… He set the bar pretty high for anyone looking to propose, EVER. Even though he’s not a fan of heights, he surprised Michelle by proposing on the “Stairway to Nothingness” on the famed Dachstein Glacier! So it felt right to them to conquer yet another glacier together, but this time in Iceland for their wedding day! So come along with me today as we share with you their intimate adventure wedding in Iceland!

Plan B Glacier Wedding Location in Iceland

As I previously mentioned, our original plan for their wedding day in Iceland was foiled by the crazy storms. But luckily we have 13 stunning glaciers to explore and we know offbeat locations like the back of our hands so we can always plan b and c on the fly. But seriously, look at that sand in the image below whirling!

The best Iceland weddings, begin with a group hike! Am I right fellow adventurers?!

…and well who doesn’t want to cross a river on their adventure wedding day?!

This glacial area has been receding rapidly since it was formed… The cave is quickly turning into a glorious “ice wall” but it still has dynamic beauty!

Michelle and Brent stood hand in hand in front of the dramatic ice, mountains, canyon walls, and raging river promising each other a lifetime of adventures together! Swoon!

…I think the bride, groom, guests, and I would all agree that although it was “plan b” it proved to be THE BEST laid plan for them in the end!

Offering such an amazing contrast throughout every inch, it’s a no brainier for the Westman Islands to be on your possible Iceland wedding location list!  So come along with us today as we give you a little look into what you could have as the backdrop to your EPIC Iceland wedding photos!

The variety of landscape and colors is what captivates me the most about the Westman Islands.  You go from lush green-pretty-delicate to hardcore-rigid-contrasty.  Can’t you just imagine having your Iceland wedding ceremony on the Westman Islands, right in front of the volcano or maybe even on top so you can enjoy the view!  …keep following below for a list of Westman Island wedding locations!

Although the Westman Islands are small (like 7 square miles) they offer an endless amount of magic!  From the moment I step foot off of the ferry to when I venture out into the outlining islands, the landscape breaths life and energy into me… Corny?  Nah, true!  Have you ever visited a place where it revives your mind-body-soul?!  Vestmannaeyjar could be your place too!  Having an Iceland wedding or elopement location that is that peaceful is unforgettable!

So the first question you’re probably wondering is… How do you even get to the Westman Islands?  Easy!  Before you get to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, there is a specific turn off for the ferry (if you go between May-September, otherwise it’s a different ferry point).   Directions to it from Reykjavik can be found HERE. You can buy tickets for the Herjolfur Ferry HERE (must buy them in advance).

The Herjolfur Ferry is about 35 minutes one way and has a cafeteria on board as well.  The first 15 minutes is a tiny bit boring but the last half is SUPER EXCITING.  You get to have some pretty amazing island views and an incredible sail into the Harbor!

Once you arrive to the Westman Islands there is a serious sense of “enchantment” in the air.  It’s a feeling that intoxicates you and makes you appreciate the little things.  Small things like appreciating your senses being awakned.  Not only your sense of sight, but the sounds of the island, smell of the clean air, the ruggedness of the textures as you touch it, and the taste of the delicious local food!

Today we would love to share with you some of the “Best Wedding Locations in the Westman Islands.”  Note: Please remember out of respect, some areas may require special permission from landowners or a special permit.  So please do your research beforehand if you do not hire us as your Iceland Wedding Planner!

1- Get Married in Iceland on top of the Eldfell Volcano – The views are unforgettable!

From across the “pond” as some say, Dave (from the U.K.) found his way to meeting Alison (from the USA) through their many terrific friends.  Weeks later they were head over heels for each other and months later, Dave proposed a lifetime of adventures to Alison!  She said Yes  Iceland was the half way point for all of their friends and family to meet and celebrate!  …so then the days of awesome Iceland wedding planning began!  They craved intimacy, adventure, and wanted to take their 20+ guests on an unforgettable EXPERIENCE for their wedding day in Iceland.  So all that said, follow us today as we share with you Alison and Dave’s adventure wedding in Iceland!  ::Update:: My Hotel Wedding did a lovely feature of Allison and Dave’s wedding, HERE.

Ohhhh yes, May 4th!  Being Star Wars fans, it was only fitting they go explore some of the epic areas the movies have been filmed within Iceland!  …May the Fourth Be With You!

But first we must set the scene… Hotel Ranga, served as the groups hotel “base camp” for 2 days.  It’s a fabulous boutique hotel found in Southern Iceland that screams luxury but still designates hints of earthy rustic charm.  It also is near Hekla, one of Iceland’s most powerful volcanoes.

When you have a wedding in Iceland that has guests attending, it’s important to provide your guests with a “welcome bag.”  It adds to the excitement and also aids your guests in things they may need during the adventure.  Alison and Dave did it up right!  With lots of goodies like a timeline card, eye mask (nice to have during the months of May-August when we have TONS of daylight), bandaids, Shout Wipes, Pepto (which isn’t sold here in Iceland) Hot Hands, Hangover Kit, Pancho, etc!

With our adventure weddings in Iceland, we action pack them with little room for delay. So it’s nice to create a timeline card to give to your guests upon check in (or at a Welcome dinner the evening before) so they know when and where they have to be.  Sets everyone up for success, you know?  Our favorite timeline creator: Pixels to Paper Studio did an awesome job on Alison and Dave’s!

Alison’s Iceland wedding dress was divine!  So much gorgeous detail and sooo flowy!

Alison had some awesome blue rain-boots she wore for the majority of the day but she also had some stunning Badgley Mischka’s and Tom’s waiting for her Iceland wedding reception!  Every adventure wedding bride needs 3 pairs of shoes!

Now let’s talk about her GROOM, Dave for a sec, shall we and his dapper Iceland wedding details!

His handmade suit even came with a custom tag that featured their initials and wedding date.  From the suit to the shoes, Dave was handsome!

As I mentioned, being Star Wars fans, Alison surprised Dave with themed cuff-links.

We adored Dave’s super awesome bow tie too!

Our Iceland hair and makeup team made Alison even more beautiful then she already was!  …and proofed her against rain and wind.

Before leaving Hotel Ranga, these two loved the idea of doing a “first look” so we opted to do it behind the hotel, riverside.

The structure for this Iceland adventure wedding was a tiny bit different than we typically do, but we were happy to craft a unique option for this awesome group!  All of the guests loaded onto a bus for a 1/2 day adventure.  Read further on to see the rest of the wedding adventure flow.

Alison and Dave for months, kept the adventure wedding day secret.  So when the guests arrived and saw the setup below, they were hollering in enthusiasm!

Having a Asatru (some refer to as a traditional Norse / Pagan / Viking) ceremony was important to Dave and Alison.  It’s a super fun ceremony that has old roots in our culture here in Iceland.  Not to mention who doesn’t want to hold an oath ring and drink from a horn?!

As many of you know, we do not go to the tourist locations like Reynisfjara, but for the right couple we make exceptions and these two loved the idea of a champagne toast here during their Iceland wedding day adventure!

Exploring with each other during your wedding day in Iceland, creates some magical moments!

After the 1/2 day adventure via bus was complete, we transitioned with 1/2 of their group to super jeeps for a more private adventure.

Alison, Dave, and their closest family members got to explore the private side of one of Iceland’s 13 glaciers!

The fog and the rain made for some dramatic Iceland wedding photo moments!

Their nieces and nephews all got to touch a glacier for the very first time!  Talk about unforgettable moments on your adventure wedding day!

Oh la la romantic Iceland wedding moments in front of glacier ice caves… Love!

Uniquely shaped mountains like these always make me melt!  Then add in a gorgeous Iceland wedding couple and it takes it to another level!

One of my favorite parts of their wedding day was the 3rd part… We said goodbye to two super jeeps and Alison and David continued on to a super secret canyon area with a private waterfall for some intimate adventures!

The contrast of the dark and light together is AMAZING to me in this Iceland wedding photo!  Major high-fives to Alison and Dave who went into total “mountain goat” mode to get to this spot!

Once everyone got back to Hotel Ranga after the days adventure, they had some time to rest and refresh before they were invited to a BEAUTIFUL Iceland wedding reception in River Hall.

Fun Fact: The bride’s grandmother had past away and in remembrance of her, we had lavender at each place setting.  It filled the room with a 5 sensory experience!

As a sweet little party favor to all of their guests, Dave and Alison gifted them with “Let the Adventure Begin” bottle openers!  How fun!

Following the overall theme of “Adventure” and “May 4th” they had 2 beautiful handmade cakes by the groom’s talented sister!

Can I just say, I LOVE Hotel Ranga’s food?!  Seriously folks, I often drive 1.5 hours from Reykjavik just to have their delicious Mushroom Soup and Reindeer Carpaccio (pictured below), no joke! Alison and Dave’s Iceland wedding menu was fit for the best foodies!

A lovely smoked salmon dish with rye bread served as their 2nd course!

Did you know with the rental of River Hall at Hotel Ranga, you have access to their beautiful balcony and impeccable view?!  Comes in handy for Iceland wedding photos!

When Alison and I were brainstorming about something fun to decor their Iceland wedding reception dancing space (Hekla Hall) we came up with some awesome ideas but in the end LOVE balloons and candles would win!  I think we made the right choice!!

First dance magic!

So many folks forget about a “send off” for the couple at the end of the night.  We crafted something super fun for this group… complete with sparklers and an “Adventure” marque sign!

It all made my cheeks hurt from SMILING so much!

Jodi and Patrick met each other 35 years ago in college and had a “love at first sight” moment.  In the words of the bride, “After that brief but powerful initial encounter, we each went our own ways, not knowing that we each felt like we had met the love of our lives, and lost track of each other for 30 years.”

Finally, 7 years ago they found themselves reconnecting from across the USA and finally spilled the beans about how they felt about each other decades ago.  Hit the fast forward button and they make a home in NYC then find themselves seeking a unique way to elope… An adventure wedding in Iceland followed by a honeymoon which would explore the entire island was what called to both of their souls!

The action packed Iceland wedding day began at 5:30am at Hotel Grimsborgir with hair, makeup, and an exciting first look!

Jodi’s Iceland wedding bouquet was one of my all time favorites!

Ugh, and Jodi’s STUNNING Iceland wedding dress was brilliant!  I love princess gowns like this that blow so beautifully around in the Icelandic wind!

…and what adventure bride would be complete without waterproof rain boots?!  Jodi’s something “blue” were these beauties!

Patrick was head to toe handsome with his awesome gray suit!  I love gray Iceland wedding suits on our grooms!

And what adventurous groom would be without his hiking boots on his Iceland wedding day?!

Our Iceland wedding hair and makeup stylist hooked Jodi up with the perfect windproof styles!

Then our amazing super jeep team took them to their beautiful lakeside ceremony spot where after exploring commenced!

After their Iceland wedding ceremony, they had so much fun exploring the area!

A luxury picnic lunch on a private black sand beach is the BEST way to celebrate your elopement in Iceland!

Our next stop during Jodi and Patrick’s luxury elopement in Iceland had views for days…

Not to mention that the Iceland wedding photographer (Ann Peters) was also in a harness tethered to a rope tied to the super jeep to get the next few amazing shots!  True adventure wedding photographer style

After a glorious 12 hour adventure wedding, we found our way back to the hotel to rest and refresh before their sweet little dinner for two!

Kevin reached out to us several months before he was planning to propose to his lovely lady, Theresa.  We built on Kevin’s idea of wanting the moment to be unforgettably romantic, in a private location, and incorporated some cozy Icelandic elements!  So come along with us today to experience their stunning luxury proposal in Iceland!

He told her they were going on an adventure that evening after visiting the Blue Lagoon… Little did she know as they were exploring, they would share such an unforgettable life changing moment together!

After the initial surprise shock-factor wore off, she of course, said YES!

HUGS and soooo much LOVE during this surprise proposal in Iceland!

Then he led her into their secret little cave… where she was in total “awe” of the amazing luxury picnic setup that he had put together!  …huge high 5 Kevin!

Then came one of my favorite moments, she finally has a look at the ring and LOVES it!

After some sips of La Caravelle Champagne, we ventured around for a sunset Iceland engagement session!

After the session, they finally got a chance to delight in the luxury picnic! Complete with lots of things to eat, sip, snuggle up with, a even a firepit to keep warm!  A truly luxurious romantic evening in Iceland fit for a king and queen!

One of our favorite champagnes out there is La Caravelle.  They are an amazing boutique champagne house that you must try!  Only the best and most delicious for our clients!

And what luxury picnic would be complete without having sweets from the best chocolatier in Iceland… Hafliði Ragnarsson!

The views were incredible from their secret Iceland marriage proposal spot!

Most times before sunset (if it sets) in Iceland, you often see the moon come out for several hours before the sun sinks into the mountains.  A perfect end to an incredible surprise proposal in Iceland, I must say!

Once they contacted us here at Iceland Wedding Planner, they realized how awesome it would be to have private wedding locations and were very keen to have a “day of memory making” no matter the weather conditions.  Well, Iceland never disappoints with surprises and unpredictable weather, that’s for sure!  For 3 days straight there was a storm that hit the South and their wedding day was right between them.  They embraced the unruly weather and came prepared even with wedding attire that would stand out from the blizzard-like conditions!  Well done Angela + Shirish, I must say!

Often into April we still have snow and snow capped peaks!

Okay okay so can we PAUSE for a second and enjoy the details of Angela’s Iceland wedding dress?  Did I mention she also had a blue velvet cape?! #yesplease

…and how darling were her shoes for their dinner after their Iceland wedding adventure?

Ohhhh and Shirish, he had some serious style too with his Iceland groom details!

If you have not been to Icelandair Vik before, there is usually an incredible view of the Reynisdrangar basalt stacks but they are hidden because of the blizzard-like conditions!

…and so we were off into the extremely exciting adventure wedding day trek!

There was just something so magical about the two of them smiling at each other from across the fire in front of that beautiful secret waterfall and Angela’s cape blowing!

They jointly recited their vows together to make it even more meaningful.  Notice they were laminated!  They were ready for any kind of weather Iceland decided to give them!

Exchanging tokens doesn’t always have to be “rings” you know, right?  Shirish chose to give Angela a necklace and Angela chose a watch for Shirish!

Hello Blizzard.  Biggest snowflakes I think any of us had EVER seen!

Seriously folks, the snow was PILING up on all of us!  Such an epic memory!  Endless HIGH FIVES to these two and embracing the snow storm during their elopement in Iceland!

I almost feel like they were challenging the snow, like “Is that the best you can do?”  They just adventured and laughed harder through it!

Mmm and onto the warmest and luxury part of the day… Their Iceland Luxury Picnic in a private cave!

One of my all-time favorite sayings is, “Life is either a great adventure or nothing at all!”  So very true!

Nothing more amazing than quite moments spent in secret canyons with hidden waterfalls for Iceland wedding photos!  Swoon!

For one, you have a really good chance of seeing Northern Lights during the months of December-March.  Two, during your Iceland elopement you could hold your wedding ceremony in natural ice cave!  …and how epic is that thought?!  An ice cave will melt over the summer and never exist again for anyone else, only for you in that moment!

But with all of that good stuff, there are some potential challenges that can also emerge with planning a winter wedding in Iceland…. Such as a snowstorm (or blizzard), gale force winds, and road closures.  It’s all about timing and having plan A, B, and C options in place ahead of time (and we got you covered!).

My favorite thing about ice caves is hunting for new ones at the beginning of every season AND knowing they will never be the same after the season ends… Making it a naturally unique Iceland wedding location!

After their glacier cave wedding ceremony, we found our way to one of the most AMAZING places I have ever found to have an Iceland Luxury Picnic!

Seriously, most amazing place I have ever found… These two rocked the romance in it too!

The colors and textures were indescribable for their Iceland elopement photos!

The snow was really putting on a show for us!  All apart of the unforgettable Iceland wedding day EXPERIENCE!

After all that white, we went on plan b… Searching for some GREEN!  This secret canyon is usually pretty green no matter the season but the storm took over as we arrived creating a super fun exploring experience!

When Iceland gives you sleet and snow, you reply back with smiles and jokes!

Plan C enters…. And I gave them GREEN!  The beauty of hiring a local Iceland Wedding Planner and Photographer… We know this place like the back of our hand!

These quite sweet moments get me every time during an Iceland wedding day… Pretty pretty!

An afternoon snack of dried fish and Brennivin (aka Black Death) was on the agenda and these two savored every bit!  It’s fun to introduce cultural elements to your Iceland elopement.

After a quick rest and refresh, they enjoyed a romantic delicious dinner for two for their Iceland wedding reception!

Although these two had been to Iceland once before, they were called back to this magical landscape to have their dreamy Iceland elopement!  Iceland is one of those countries that you can continuously visit and never see the same thing twice, forever!  Seriously folks, I live here and I am still adventuring to new places each day/week!

This winter has been one of the mildest on record for decades.  Typically in March, we have a lot more snow in the mountains and the ground, but for Stacey and Aaron, this was the PERFECT amount!  So come along with me today to witness their beautiful elopement in Iceland!

Ohhhhhhh swoon!  Look at that Iceland wedding dress!

Stacey’s arrival into that sweet little black church gave me goosebumps!

Awww and Aaron’s reaction of seeing his beautiful bride was uber sweet!

Can we hit the pause button for a sec and admire Stacey’s unique Iceland wedding bouquet?!

Every Icelander will tell you that the Snaefellsnes is not only a stunning place to visit but that the peninsula is enchanted!

Don’t worry, even though it’s been a super mild winter, we found a glorious amount of snow to have for some romantic Iceland elopement photos!

Kirkjufell Mountain (and waterfall) is incredibly beautiful when it has a light dusting of snow on it… Making way for stunning elopement photos!

There are many secret places within the Snaefellsnes Peninsula to escape away from tourists… We took a little trip to one of my favorite secret waterfalls for a fun little adventure crossing rivers and such!

The Snaefellsnes Peninsula is known to have an abundance of golden sand beaches ready for you to explore!

Ever think about venturing to a shipwreck beach with crazy awesome lava rock formations?!  These two ROCKED IT!

Toasting with bubbles cliffside, is a must do during your Iceland elopement!

When the weather changes in Iceland, it’s just a wonderful opportunity to HUG harder!

…and laugh harder that you have somehow experienced 4 seasons in one day

Take a page out of Stacey and Aaron’s book and make sure you take time to truly enjoy the view too!

As if their day was not adventurous enough, these two opted in on my suggestion of heading down inside of a 8,000 year old lava tube to explore it!  Special Note:  All of these images were taken in 100% darkness!  How cool, right?!

After 10+ hours of awesome adventures, it was time to rest, refresh, and get their second wind for their Iceland wedding reception for two!

It started snowing again so sadly no Northern Lights graced us, but we mocked up a super fun nighttime wedding photoshoot instead for Stacey and Aaron!

From our own wedding in the Lofoten Islands… My handsome Icelandic husband wore a traditional Calvin Klein black suit with a gray shirt and tie… Tiny twist on the traditional route.  Then halfway through the day he switched his shirt and tie for another look when I switched my dress!  Shout out to my dear friend Jean Smith for capturing ?

Remember Marlene and Alan’s elopement adventure in Iceland? Alan donned a traditional black 2 button suit and tan shoes.  Classic and impressive!

How fun would it be to have your groom in a non-traditional tux for your Iceland wedding?!  Do you recall Christophe and Mary’s Vik Iceland wedding adventure?  Christophe, I dare to say coined the word, dapper!

One of my favorite informal looks for an Iceland elopement is a clean-cut linen suit!

Iceland wedding accessories… Groom Shoes, Vow Book, and Jeweled Boutineere!  I’m a fan!

Blue suits were the trend last year and Luke (remember his pretty bride Kristi and their adventure wedding?) wore it well with mixing in green and gray accents!

So much about Matt and Elita’s adventurous elopement that I LOVED!  I mean seriously… The beard, the braid, the custom suit, vest, and rocking a fun tie?! #yesplease!

Nothing beats a fancy watch on a groom-to-be!  JS Watch Co. Reykjavik is a personal favorite for me!

Derek last year (remember his and Abbie’s elopement adventure, go back HERE to recall) showed us how good-looking it was to mix navy and tan!

I’m a sucker for “boots and suits” on Iceland wedding days, but rocking out a pair of nice shoes is pretty freaking awesome too (and then add in a hat like Todd did on his and Sheena’s lava tube cave wedding and it turns into something pretty special)!

If you have family roots that take you back to Scotland, it may be a lovely option to honor with wearing a tartan suit!

A way to further personalize your Iceland wedding day (or elopement) is to have your wedding date embroidered in your groom-to-be’s suit!

Footwear… Hiking boots at some point during the day is a MUST!  Remember Luisa and Marek’s rainy wedding day?  Those boots helped them rock it out!

Amy surprised Israel with cuff links that had coordinates of the wedding ceremony, what a thoughtful detail!
